Superman Returns was released a week ago and I still haven't heard or read about its sales.
Dead Man's Chest was released yesterday and today we find out that it sold 5 million copies.
So...whats the deal with Supes? Did it also flop on DVD and we're gonna be getting Bryan Singer complaining about Pirates again?

(sigh) It didnt actually flop at the cinema, certain people would just like to think it did. Personally i thought it was a damn sight better than Pirates. Plus im not sure Singer ever complained about Pirates, i think that was us.
How come on here, i always feel like im stepping out of some intellecual closet by saying i actually liked Superman Returns. Im sure i cant be the only one.

He did in many interviews...including comic-con, I believe. But, anyway, I just found what I was looking for! Well...sort of!

Man, i know SR wasnt perfect but it was made with a director with true respect for the character, was beautifully shot and the plane scene for me was the best piece of action ive seen in the movies this year.
I know the whole "it cost $260 million to make" thing will get rolled out again, but i would urge people to actually look at the facts. $60 million of this accounts for the 3 failed attempts to make this movie in the last 15 years, something Bryan Singer certainly isnt accountable for. I do for example belive that the sequel will be made for about $200, as none of these pre-development costs apply.

I never said I hated Superman Returns. Was it perfect? no. Could it have been better...WAY better? Yes. But was it entertaining? Yes indeed.

I bought SR on DVD and saw it in theaters. I loved it and think it's the perfect addition to Superman and Superman II.

As I said before, Superman Returns probably would've done even better in theatres if it was released this month. The movie felt more like a winter movie event than a summer blockbuster. It felt along the same line as King Kong and LotR. And as you can see, those movies were released in winter and look how well they did. If Kong was released in the summer instead of winter, it wouldn't have made as much as it did.

yeah i agree maybe even if it came out to the weekend after MI III or memorial Day i think this film would have done better i belive if pirates 2 didnt come out 2 weeks later this film would have done much better box office wise in the summer

Completely agree on that, the success of Bond in this winter month has really shown that there is still a market. But it will be interesting to see who wins between Spidey and Pirates 3 this coming summer. Thats the real test, two billion dollar franchises head to head.

Meh, it made enough. I'll be waiting for the sequel, of which hopefully will be improved upon. Not that it will be that difficult or anything.

Superman Returns wasn't that bad it just in my opinion was not as good as Pirates 2 or Batman Begins. I am sorry if its not a popular decesion but it was not as good a si hoped it would have been With Kevin Spacy as Lex. I think Superman Returns is selling some dvd but its making more head way on the Rental markets. I think Pirates 2 like on the big screen was going to be big on dvd sales.

I wonder if the fact that so many different Special editions and exclusives are available has any impact on the sales figures.
The Superman 1 & 2 special editions are flying off the shelves (in my area at least) And the Steel Box Set is nowhere in sight.
Of course, I secured one on the first day. Not that I'm bragging or anything.:P

I thought about getting that then I thought, that'll be out of date when the next Superman Returns Sequel comes along in 2009. My 2 disc edition will do and hey, I might go out and get all four of the old Superman movies in a box set when x-mas has gone by.

And hopefully Pirates 3 will recapture what made the original so fun, because i personally felt 2 was overlong and a little mediocre. But thats a different argument. Personally i think Spidey will win out, he relates to more demographics.

It's really hard to say. I'll have to put my vote on POTC3 over SM3, although it will probably be close. Was that even what you were talking about?

Actually Supes is doing pretty well on DVD.
Warner Home Video's "Superman Returns" took the top spot on the national DVD sales and rental charts for the week ending Dec. 3. According to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert data, "Superman" outsold "Meltdown" by a margin of only 2.5-to-1, while "Meltdown" generated an additional $8 million in rental revenue to bring its take after two weeks to $18.3 million. The sleeper of the week is the Weinstein Co.'s "Clerks II," which came to video after earning only $24.2 million in theaters but bowed at No. 4 on the sales and rental charts.

Made me weep for Christopher Reeve's memory.
So we put the boot in when we reviewed it.

I don't see why so many peoples hate SR. It rocked! I see nothing about it that makes it any less of a movie than the first two. (Okay, it pales in comparison to the first one. But it's still great.)
Curiously, what about it instills such hate in you guys?

I think the two things that kind of hurts SR is the lack of action in the middle half of the movie and the whole child issue because the movie's ending makes Superman look like a dead beat father. That can affect the movie slightly and can affect how women view Superman.

Not a bad choice, but still too young IMO.
My choice, Kate Beckinsale, shes a good actress, spunkier than Bosworth, doesnt look like a stiff wind would blow her over (unlike toothpick Bosworth) and right age. Plus shes actually brunette to start with.

Routh was great though.
As for people not liking SR, you cant keep everyone happy i guess. I thought Daredevil was mediocre but some people loved it, at least SR didnt have a sex scene in front of a log fire while Evanesance played in the background ;)

I never got that impression, myself. Sure, we'd all like to see Supes squeeze James Marsden's head like a pimple and reclaim what is rightfully his, but that would be a bit too out of character.
Superman has an obligation to protect. Not just his own Justin Cooper wannabe of a son, but all humanity. Superman is a lot more selfless than that despite how his actions appear to to the N.O.W.

I know he has his duties to humanity, but some will see what he's doing as dead beat father status. Unfortunately, even Spiderman is going to look more responsible than Supe. Spidey balances his social life with hero life. Supe is unable to do that at this point. It will affect the way people view him especially women. One thing most women hate is a dead beat male even if he is the world's hero. I must admit myself he does seem to be slightly irresponsible.
The only possible thing he could do is try to get Lois to fall in love with his Clark Kent identity. But that's way beyond impossible.

I suppose, but we can't really compare Superman to Spiderman. As characters, not just heroes.
I believe David Carradine said it best in Kill Bill vol.2,
"As you know, l'm quite keen on comic books. Especially the ones about superheroes. I find the whole mythology surrounding superheroes fascinating. Take my favorite superhero, Superman. Not a great comic book. Not particularly well-drawn. But the mythology... The mythology is not only great, it's unique. Now, a staple of the superhero mythology is, there's the superhero and there's the alter ego. Batman is actually Bruce Wayne, Spider-Man is actually Peter Parker. When that character wakes up in the morning, he's Peter Parker. He has to put on a costume to become Spider-Man. And it is in that characteristic Superman stands alone. Superman didn't become Superman. Superman was born Superman. When Superman wakes up in the morning, he's Superman. His alter ego is Clark Kent. His outfit with the big red "S", that's the blanket he was wrapped in as a baby when the Kents found him. Those are his clothes. What Kent wears - the glasses, the business suit - that's the costume. That's the costume Superman wears to blend in with us. Clark Kent is how Superman views us. And what are the characteristics of Clark Kent. He's weak... he's unsure of himself... he's a coward. Clark Kent is Superman's critique on the whole human race."

I see what yoir trying to say but im not sure poeple would even make that connection. I mean Superman isnt saying he doesnt want to be Jasons father, but hes keeping his distance to protect his son. Plus he knows Richard White would take care of them and the truth would cause undue trauma to the entire family. Being from his background Clark must know the value of a good upbringing and must know that as a family him, Lois and Jason couldnt work.
I know you rationalised this with the Spiderman thing. However Supes doesnt even say he wont see Jason, he says "he'll be around". I think at the end of the day that most reasonable people wouldnt even think that Superman was being a deadbeat dad under the circumstances. I think if some one actually came upto me and told me the reason they didnt like SR was because he neglected his fatherly responsibilities, i hit them in the face with a rake. Its just reading a bit much into the subtext and looking for issues which dont really exist.
sorry, all IMO of course.

After watching the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2, I finally see what an awful movie it was before. YEESH!
They should have released this thing years ago. The RD cut may actually be as good as Superman: The Movie. Seriously!

Well, I also enjoyed this movie. I enjoyed the emotions they gave superman and yes, I even liked the 'suit'. Most ppl didn't like for some reason, o,the 'S' was too small, the colors were too dark,it looked rubbery.../sigh the onlything I would of changed is the colors. The blue should of been a different shade of blue, plust they should of had the 'S' in the cape as well.
Overall it was a good movie,it was more story based than action based, which made it suffer the most. I just enjoyed supermans/clarks facial reactions to lois's anger with superman..just made the movie for me..
