Nicknamed the "Not Ready for Primetime Players," the original cast of Saturday Night Live ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons.

From the premiere of this groundbreaking sketch comedy show on October 11, 1975, live from historical Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner launched themselves into instant stardom and were often referred to as "The Beatles of Comedy."

Created by Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, few other shows have had the cultural impact and relevance of Saturday Night Live.

Nowhere else can you see the complete first season of SNL, featuring hosts George Carlin, Rob Reiner, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor, Elliott Gould, Candace Bergen, or original musical performances by Simon & Garfunkle, ABBA, Patti Smith, Jimmy Cliff, and Carly Simon. And if you're curious as to how the original cast was hired, check out the DVD bonus features that include the screen tests of each performer.

That's right, the thing we thought would never happen is happening; season 1 of Saturday Night Live is coming on December 5. The EIGHT disc set (all single-sided) will sell for $69.98 and includes a 32 page limited edition photo book with rare SNL photos of the cast and Lorne Michaels. The set will feature full frame (1.33:1) video, along with English stereo audio. The set includes 1594 mins of material - over 26 hours!

Obviously the big question on everyone's minds is "What about the musical performances?" and it's something we don't have the answer to right now, but we'll look into it and post anything we can find out.

Wow, I was expecting to see a season set from SNL. They've done plenty of Best Ofs and Specials and the one thing holding back the DVDs was the musical performances. I figured they would have a better chance releasing seasons after 2000 on DVD then the ones from the early years. SCTV had trouble and released their seasons out of order on DVD. But TVonDVD gets bigger and bigger each year. Remember, Albert Brooks also had some films and The Muppets appeared throughout the season. People complain about how long it takes for The Simpsons to come out on DVD, even with two or three releases a year it'll take quite awhile for SNL to put out 32 seasons. Or maybe they won't put out 80-81, 85-86, 94-95.

10/11/75: George Carlin / Billy Preston, Janis Ian

Holy sh-t! There's no way they would do this for each season. It's such a money waster. But then again, like Conan says, NBC is crazy!

Yeah uhh... who's honestly going to buy these? I'm a fan of the show (well, I'm a fan of the Dana Carvey/Adam Sandler/Rob Schneider days), and never once has the need for a complete season of SNL on DVD crossed my mind.

Holy crap! I never thought they'd actually put out season sets but wow!

Wow, I didn't think it would happen either. Depending on the price, I might buy some of the first 5 years. But then I wouldn't buy any until the late 80's cast. (Hartman, Carvey, Meyers, Spade, Farley, Sandler, etc.)

I'd say that's a pretty good price for all that you get. I'll be seriously tempted. Well... I'm definitly going to rent them anyway.

Well the show had over 20 million viewers 30 years ago plus how many number of fans they've gained in those 30 years, that's larger than any show on TV today that have DVD sets out every year. Plus its pretty hard to impossible to watch episodes, even entire episodes from that era. So you'll get the curious young SNL fan, the diehards of all ages, the fans from the 70s who don't watch the show anymore etc.

People seem to forget the Christopher Guest/Billy Crystal/Martin Short season of SNL in the 80s before Lorne returned (and had a horrible season). 1984-85 is still one of the best seasons ever.

Well honestly, I haven't seen much of the time inbetween.

But when the 84-85 season comes out (In 2013), remind me about it. ;)

I'll buy the first set alone for the one with George Harrison. Does he perform that year, too?

Sorry, season two. Which also has the first two episodes hosted by future superstar Steve Martin. I would buy it for the Harrison performances as well, Simon and Harrison combined for 6 performances that night.

The same kinda people who buy all the seasons for X-Files, or Seinfeld, or Star Trek... or any other really long running show for that matter.

What kind of people is that? I have all of the X-Files and Seinfeld seasons. ;) Though I hate the last 3 of X-Files.

I think what he means is.....would anyone buy the 30 or so seasons of SNL. That would be pretty nuts.

I'm sure there are and will. There has to be people who have bought all the Star Trek DVDs and that has to be almost 30.
They haven't mentioned anything about how they scored the music so who knows, maybe certain releases will be delayed or skipped over ala SCTV.

I suppose the first season would be worthwhile for John Belushi alone.

I suppose the first season would be worthwhile for John Belushi alone.

1st season - Chevy's only full season, the first of everyone else
2nd season - Chevy's final episodes, Bill Murray's 1st season
3rd season - Probably the best season of the first five years
4th season - Last season of Danny and John
5th season - Last season of everyone else

I wonder if the Milton Berle episode will be included. Lorne has never re-aired that episode, he hated it. It was a wreck. He wanted to do his old show, not Saturday Night Live. Lorne was forced into bringing him in; so hopefully they include it just so everything is 'complete'.

It's not monetarily feasible to do every season of SNL. We're up to what? 32 this year? The show may never end, even after Lorne, so what's the point of having every season? There's not enough time in anyone's life to watch all of that again. Only half of every night is good material anyway. I like the Best Of DVDs and I have a lot of them. That's enough for me.

JBond

Do you suppose certain skits that "broke the rules" will be included? I assume they would, but I have the feeling some of them are never aired.

whats next? every complete season of jeopardy on dvd??

JBond

It's funny you should say that, because recently I saw news fo rthe realse of "Match Gane 73" on DVD.

Soooo, yeah. Maybe game shows are next.

I wonder how much the complete series of "The Price is Right" would cost? Although, that show really "jumped the shark" in its 7th season.

Here's a review. Apparently some small stuff is missing, one of them being the bumpers, that would've been nice to have. The other are some commercials. Waiting on the word for that, I can understand not having the rerun of the commercial air later in the season.

JBond

You mean like SNL fake commercials or the commercial breaks?

Yeah the SNL fake ones. And the bumpers you see after commercial to tell you its back on are missing except the last one before the goodnights.

From what I've seen of it, it's one of the most impressive Season sets I've seen. I haven't picked one up myself, but the guy in front of me at Best Buy this morning had one and opened it up to look through everything, Its very nice, I'm sure I'll pick one up, a couple of fake commercials missing or not.
