View Full Version : Remakes of the Future

I was reading a column on James Berardinelli's website and I got to thinking: what movies that have come out during our lifetimes (original ones, not remakes) do you think will be remade in the future?
Edit: On second thought, this should probably be in General Movies. could one of the mods move it?

Independence Day
Pirates of the Carribean
Alien

There will prob be a remake of LOTR some time in the future, it is the 2nd biggest book of all time so it's likely to happen. We might be dead before it's made but I bet it's made.

I'm betting anything original and good that Hollywood has set out in our lifetimes will be crapped on by ways of remake in the future.

Hollywood will be extinct sometime in the future. Independent filmmakers and production companies will eventually overpower it.

Lord of the Rings was great in our time. But I bet if someone could take what made OUR Lord of the Rings great, add in more scenes from the book and keep with the style, substance, and storytelling, i bet their remake could be great as well.
I'm sure more Star Trek films will continue into the future. But a remake of the Original Series I will not be surprised if this happens. After all we got JJ Abrams making Star Trek XI with rumours of Matt Damon as James T Kirk.

There will be a Star Wars remake in my lifetime, I bet.

I dunno...I don't think even I'm that cynical. If anyone actually remakes a Star Wars episode, it won't be for atleast 50 years.
And you're not going to live that long.

Well since it seems there’s a good chance that the Boys From Brazil is going to be remade I am going to venture that you’ll soon see remakes of these movies:
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (This has been shopped around already)
Marathon Man
The French Connection
Three Days of the Condor
Cool Hand Luke
The Graduate
China Town
The Godfather series (both Coppola and Evans will have to be dead for this to happen, but it will happen someday)
Unfortunately after Robert Evans dies almost every movie that he ever produced, before 1980, is going to be remade with the exception of Popeye.

Sure. ;)
Anyways, I predict Wedding Crashers will be remade at some point in the future.

Hollywood is changed. I see it in the films. I feel it in my soul. I smell it in the air. Much originality that once was is lost, for none now live who remember when it had it. It began with the overload of the remakes.
:D ;)

I could see them remaking LOTR sometime, maybe after my lifetime but its possible. If it is while I'm alive, I'll be very conflicted. For the most part I give remakes a chance, but then again, there aren't many of the old classics that I grew up with or came out in my time so I don't have the awe factor as much. So a remake doesn't bother me. LOTR might be the first movies I would hate to see ever remade, which makes me a hypocrite..weeeee..

I don't think they'll remake them for awhile. It seems to me that movies are generally remade because they can be updated, redone easily, or because better technology can improve them. LOTR, I don't think there's really anything that would make it necessary to remake the movies. I'm not a big fan of the films, but they probably got as close as they ever will to getting it right.

The only way to do a better adaptation of the Lord of the Rings films is to split them up and into six films, for example:
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Book One
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Book Two
And the same for the others.
Alternatively you'd have to do a tv series.

I could see them maybe doing a television miniseries in the distant future.

We have had a good portion of horror remakes. I feel the action movies are coming now.
Remakes of Mad Max, Escape from New York, those kinds of movies. Post apocalyptic action movies.
I still want to see a remake of the Wizard Of Oz. I think it's about that time if you ask me.

2nd most popular?
I think austin powers will eventually be remade as a serious spy thriller.
Also if this 3D revolution does materialise then there are going to be alot more remakes.

Yeah isn't it second only to the bible or something? Or is it 2nd longest only to the bible? Personally I think both books are crap, I couldn't get into FOTR (and they walk over another hill, they then walked over another hill. Yawn) and I'm not big on the bible either.

The French Connection was supposed to be adapted into a NBC drama series 1-2 years ago. It was going to be set in the same time period of the early 1970s. The pilot might've been made, never heard anything after the first couple articles.
Bob Evans will out live us all.
Ghostbusters will be remade. (MIB, while based on a comic book, is the nearest thing to a remake)
Back to the Future Trilogy will be remade, but with all the changes it would be one hell of an effort to be better.
Gremlins, I just read that Joe Dante will have no involvement in sequels or remakes, doesn't want to see a sequel and says the studio isn't sure what direction to go (All CGI or puppetts).
Planet of the Apes has a 'reimagining' still waiting for the sequel. If The Hulk can be remade, Fox could even try another Apes remake.

I don’t know how old you are, but I plan on out living Robert Evans by at least 20 years or so, of course that’s baring the fairly unlikely chance of sudden heart failure induced by consuming copious amounts of hard alcohol and blow.
As far as remakes of popular established films like the Back to the Future series, Ghotsbusters, etc., goes I think your chances of seeing remakes all depends on who owns the rights. I am pretty sure that Spielberg owns the Back to the Future franchise, not Universal, but I am not sure. If he does own the franchise that means he would have to okay any remakes and I don’t see him doing it. He’s filthy rich, so he won’t do it for the money, and I don’t see him doing it an attempt to release a more visually appealing movie because the current CGI technology wouldn’t add anything substantial to a remake.

Wizard of Oz will probably be remade.
Even though I hate the original, I can imagine The Crow getting remade.
Hellraiser. Along with every other horror movie ever made.
Even though sequels don't seem to show any sign of drying up, I can imagine the original Alien film getting remade.

As long as it was more like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and not Corpse Bride. As much as I loved the Corpse Bride and The Nightmare Before Christmas I think a weird trippy live action Wizard of Oz would be so much better.

After all he's been through, as long as there are movies for him to produce and women for him to marry and divorce he has enough reasons to get up in the morning. I know he'll probably pass away soon, but his aura is something that should live forever.

I've always wanted to see a more mature dark Wizard of Oz, like American McGee's Alice. If you were to remake the film, it seems like a better route to go. Drop the musical elements, morals etc and make it a strong PG-13. There were quite a few films made before the famous 1939 which apparently is the most viewed film of all time. But the novel was apparently darker, where even the Tin Man used his axe to cut of limbs of living trees and a heads of a wild cat.

I could see Caddyshack remade. Golf is more popular now, take the basic plot = remake. WB just annouced they're doing Direct to DVD movies, wouldn't surprise me if they did a Caddyshack prequel. T&A&Golf.

I think I've figured out how remakes materialise, other than the fact that Hollywood is unoriginal:
When another entry in a franchise is being worked out and it doesn't eventuate, a remake is eventually announced because the studios don't believe another sequel will help, they believe that by remaking the film it will garner more box office.

I can understand Evil Dead but Ferris Bueller's Day Off (I say this cause I heart eighties movies, specially this one), CaddyShack and Casablanca remade? I'd kill the head honchos who would even think of the possibility of that.
Back to the Future and Ghostbuster remakes? No. Well I mean I wasn't too much of a fan of the second and third BttF films but the first one, man that person should be eletrocuted for remaking the first if that were to ever happen.
Btw, I also agree with Tim Burton making a darker Wizard of Oz. That'd be freakin awesome XD

I say Evil Dead for two reasons:
1.) The film is a piece of macabre art. Filmed with a modest budget of $30,000 and yet it still stands head and shoulders above most modern PG-13 rated horror trash in both suspense and visual effects.
2.) They ARE in fact remaking The Evil Dead, so you know I'm yet another step closer to reaping my revenge on the corporate nimrods of Hollywood.

I'm with you. I DARE hollywood to try to remake that movie. It would be horrible. I don't care if Mikey Fox and Chris Lloyd were the freaking producers, it wouldn't be 10% as good as the original.

^Hey I'm with you guys. But they will end up remaking Back to the Future. This trilogy was like the opening to a whole new idea of film making. It opened a lot of ideas for directors/producers/writers. Its definately one of my most favorite movies. It would be cool to see a remake, but they have to do a better job than Michael J Foxx (which I doubt). There are films that were remade that we liked now...right?!...let me think...there's...ummm

The Ring and The Grudge re-makes were both good and now both and sequels too. I haven't seen Dark Water yet.

I've seen the Japanese version of Dark Water and I was let down by it actually. I'm not going to bother with the remake though.
I hate Hollywood remaking Asian films because it just further proves their inability to come up with original ideas.
