Ronin, awesome awesome movie.
In the Line of Fire, good politicalesque thriller.
Heat, it has a big following now, but at the time of it's release it didn't do too hot, so I guess technically it could be underrated.

I love "In the Line of Fire", I can't change the channel everytime it's on TNT or whatever.

As for me, there's a great time travel movie (well, technically there's no time travel in it) called Frequency that doesn't/didn't get much attention. I also agree with Butterfly Effect.

Bullitt. It is a classic that my generation fails to witness. It is one of Steve McQueen's best films. It trails The Great Escape which is also an amazing film...Two films that need to be seen and I don't think that a lot of people on these boards have seen them; unless you are into older films.

Ronin

Im not saying these are underrated because people who have seen any of them rate them highly. What I will say is these are UNDER DISCUSSED gems that I consider superior enteries into their genres.

Firstly 10 from the last few years-

Shaun Caruths PRIMER- Sci Fi/Time Travel
Bill Paxton's FRAILTY- Thriller/Gothic Horror
Lucky McKee's MAY- Horror/black Comedy
Joe Carnahan's NARC- Gritty Cop Film
Christian Duguay's THE ASSIGNMENT-Espionage Thriller
David Mamet's SPARTAN-Espionage Thriller
David Twohy's BELOW- Sub Thriller (Written By Darren Aronofsky)
Robert Myer Burnett's FREE ENTERPRISE- Romantic Comedy ala SWINGERS
Julian Richards THE LAST HORROR MOVIE- Horror/Black Comedy
Neil Marshal's DOG SOLDIERS- Horror/Action/Comedy
Gregor Jordan's BUFFALO SOLDIERS-War Comedy

and Ive probably listed to many already but, I cant resist mentioning a few older films that really deserve more attention-

John Frankenheimer's SECONDS- Thriller
Alan J Pakula's THE PARRALAX VIEW-Espionage Thriller
Micheal Mann's THIEF- Heist
Alan Parker's ANGEL HEART- Noir Thriller
John Boorman's POINT BLANK- Crime Thriller
Arthur Penn's NIGHTMOVES- Crime Thriller
Adrian Lyne's JACOBS LADDER-Thriller
William Friedkin's TO LIVE AND DIE IN LA-Cop Thriller
Micheal Winner's THE MECHANIC- Hitman
Micheal Winner's SCORPIO- Espionage Thriller
Don Siegel's MADIGAN-Cop thriller
Sidney Lumet's THE HILL-War

God I love all these films, Soem of the best from each genre, enjoy

Steve McQueen is one of my all time favorite actors. I've seen most of his popular ones, there's still others like The Thomas Crown Affair that I have yet to see. One of my fav McQueen movies is The Getaway, one of the coolest movies I've seen.

Well, guess that depends on how you see underrated. Imo underrated has nothing to do with box office intake. If everyone loves a movie its simply not underrated.(rated, as in how good you think the movie is, i.e 'how would you rate the movie..' etc...)

If most people (critics, public opinion etc) hate a movie you love - bam: underrated.

If it sucks at the box office thats underachived imo.

THough i'm no definition expert, but i stil think that money takes away the whole meaning of underrated.

So technically, no ;)

One movie that I think will be underrated this year is Lucky Number Slevin. It was in fifth place at the box office this weekend and it looks like it's not going to make than $30-$35 million dollars.

Totaly agree money has no bearing on film quality, in fact 95% of the time its the complete opposite...

Under rated to me means great films that arent talked about often enough. Hence I titled my list Under Discussed.

Movies that people havent seen, but should have.

Cinema that is as good, if not better than the films that the masses have flocked to because of media saturation.

I love both kinds of movies. Movie that the massive amount of audience flocks to and underrated cinema. Lucky Number Slevin is probably one of the most underrated gems will see this year. It's got a good cast and surprisingly something that the massive amount of people didn't go to see over the weekend. How does at the box office, I don't care.

Also Se7en is not underated. Many list it as one of the best movies of the last ten years, it has a big ole' special edition dvd, the kind they only make for movies that are big. Definatley not underated. Maybe it is with younger kids that weren't very old when it came out, and it is way better than Saw.

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure

I think it may be a cult classic, but I am 15 and just discovered this film today. Man it was just a great movie! I was surprised at the 6.6/10 on imdb. Though the imdb staff gave it a 7.9/10.

Some others:

Armageddon- Not the greatest movie but it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's entertaining.

Friday Night Lights- This is one of the better sports movie's that I have seen in a long time. Great drama, a good score, good direction.

Jarhead- I don't get how critics didn't like this! This movie was GREAT.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy- Does what you expect, entertains!

Lord of War- A very solid film, deserves more respect.

War Of the Worlds (2005) - Very enteraining, and I thought that besides the ending it was a good story.

I quite liked Armageddon as well. Actually, I enjoy a lot of Michael Bay movies. I know tons of people absolutely hate him, but I don't see why. His movies are entertaining popcorn flicks that are fun to watch. His editing style takes a couple minutes to adjust to though. If you see The Island or Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you'll see why we ahte him.

Michael Bay didnt direct Texas Chainsaw Massacre......

And the Island was ok. Or, that is the first part was good, the second part fell flat.

As Red_Vader said, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a good movie that didn't get enough attention because it was up against PotC.

I really like Pitch Black. Aside from my brother, I can't say i know anyone else who does as well.

Hmm.I wonder if Before Sunrise and Before Sunset counts as being under-rated films.

Ohhh good one. I love these films and are easily the best series i've ever seen, also the best sequel ever. I don't know if they are technically underated or not though, the critics really praised them, but most people haven't a clue about them.

Is Confessions of a Dangerous Mind underrated? If it is, then that.

It's one of my favorite movies.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre wasn't directed by him and I did see the Island. I enjoyed it for the most part. I thought it was a mindless entertaining action movie, like all of Bay's movies.

Galaxy Quest.

None of my friends heard of it, but when I brought it over to a house to watch they laughed their butts off. It has a certain charm to it.

Whoever said Serenity, I agree with them. It's not incredible, but it deserves more than it got.

I also think Phone Booth is really underrated.

I haven't seen The Rock in a long time, but I remember liking it. What scenes?

The action is alright, but it has some horrible horrible dialogue.

"FBI, FREEZE SUCKA!"
"Whoaaaaa, marriage police pull over."
"Enough chitchat a-hole."

Among many others.

I think Galaxy Quest is one of the funniest movies in recent years. You're not alone.

Ah yes, it's coming back to me. I remember hating a lot of Nicolas Cage lines.
