Who else has read this book? Please tell me somebody else has other than my lonesome self! *Does a little angry dance* ;)
This novel is narrated from heaven by a 14yr old girl named Susie, after having been murdered very early in the story by her next door neighbour. Life (in heaven, where Susie is for pretty much the entire story) is a perpetual yesterday. There she narrates and keeps watch over her grieving family and friends, as well as her brazen killer and the sad detective working on her case. As Sebold fashions it, everyone has his or her own version of heaven. Susie's resembles the athletic fields and landscape of a suburban high school: a heaven of her "simplest dreams," where "there were no teachers.... We never had to go inside except for art class.... The boys did not pinch our backsides or tell us we smelled; our textbooks were Seventeen and Glamour and Vogue."
There are some very dark and disturbing elements to this book, most of which are at the very start. But it's also a very easy read, and you come to care about jsut about ALL of the characters, not just Susie.
The Lovely Bones film adaption has already been greenlighted. It's to be the next project for Peter Jackson to direct, after King Kong. :D
