Young was part of the team who worked hard to adapt Bond to the big screen. And, his three films were great.
Guy Hamiliton directed the best Bond film, Goldfinger. Diamonds was good, but Live & Let Die and Golden Gun SUCKED!
Lewis Gilbert did a good job with the ORIGINAL exit film for Connery. The Spy Who Loved Me is the best Roger Moore film, but Moonraker sucked.
Peter Hunt was a good director, but his contribution as an editor was more important to the Bond franchise.
John Glen was good but I can't forgive him for Living Daylights. The worst Bond film!
Martin Campbell was awesome, but let's see what happens with Casino Royale.
Roger Spottiswoode and Michael Apted were all right.
Lee Tamahori is the worst Bond director. Period.
My vote? Terence Young. The Original. The BEST!

You seem to be basing the director's work alot on what you thought of the actual movie. Maybe that'd be the screenwriter's fault.
It's not John Glen's fault that The Living Daylights sucked. (although I like it)

Director's have final say. I know the Bond franchise is different cause the Broccoli family are literally the one's in charge. However, they've always allowed directors the freedom to be THE director. Terence Young, for instance, didn't always follow the script. Sean Connery and him changed a lot of the stuff around. Thunderball is a good example. The reason why Connery says that his favorite performance as Bond was in that film is because Young allowed him to improvise many scenes.
The mastermind behind the Roger Moore films was Guy Hamiliton. It was him during pre-production of Diamonds who said that after 7 films the franchise should lighten up. That's why he hired Tom Mankewicz (Superman, Ladyhawke) to make the script lighter and add more humor.
Octopussy was 80-90% controlled by John Glen.
So, yeah, the directors have had a major influence on these films. I don't know how Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli treat their directors, but Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman gave them a good amount of control and freedom.

I like Terence Young as well. They should make more Bond films like "From Russia with Love."

All the Bond films beginning with Dr. No and ending with Man with the Golden Gun were produced by Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman. The exception is Thunderball, which was produced by Kevin McClory. Spy Who Loved Me till Octopussy I believe was produced by Albert Broccoli. Octopussy till License was produced by Albert and Michael G. Wilson. GoldenEye till now was produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli.
Just so you know.

Terence Young had a good thing going before others ****ed it up.
Guy Hamiliton had one goo movie, then was mostly responsible for the series falling into Camp, so **** him
Lewis Gilbert made one good movie, and to particularly ****y ones
Peter Hunt seemed competant enough
John Glen was good but inconsistant
Campbell did good on Goldeneye, then proved that outside of bond he kind of sucks (Vertical Limit)
Spottiswoode ditto
Apted & Tamahori are all different because they both have a much more substantiol non-Bond careers. Bond-wise they were both fine.

Martin Campbell/Michael Apted.. they both stated that Bond was about seeing the REAL deal in terms of action and special FX, and that special FX were to be used sparingly .. a statement that Lee Tamahori can't say... and can't say he did well...

That's true to some degree. If Young would have stayed the series would have never gone campy. It was Hamiliton who suggested that and Cubby and Harry were like "all right." Then, Diamonds broke records and they decided to stay on that path.
I wonder why Young didn't return. He worked with Cubby and Harry on some films in the `70s, so it wasn't them who didn't want him back.
