I just got back from seeing, kingdom of heaven, great film, but that is not what i'm talking about here. A few things took me out of the film a few time though, and that was becouse of the films musical score. Now to let you all know, I am a HUGE movie score afficianado, hell, its the only kind of music I listen to.

So i was put off a few times, cause I heard music from OTHER films!!! Some of the music in this film is not original, I heard music taken directly from:

The 13th warrior
Hannibal
Black hawk down

and i beileve a couple more. I'm writing this because I want to know whats the deal??? Did they run out of money? Did they have not enough time to complete a score? Cause for me, its very distracting...

i Found the music during the sex scene quite annoying, made it sound like a some arabic porn flick.

But you're right. That was very......awkward.

As for the rest of the score, I noticed some nice choral pieces and some decent rousing compositions, but nothing like a Braveheart of Gladiator type theme to latch onto. The music always comes clear for me on the second viewing though, so I reserve judgement until I see it again.

I personally didn't notice the borrowing of parts of the score from other Scott films, but that is indeed strange. The same sort of thing happened with Troy, where Horner had to arrange music quickly after they scrapped the other score and he was accused of thieving from Enemy at the Gates, among others. What the hell is going on?

I really noticed the 13th warrior part. It was quite unabashed use of other scores.

Seems pretty god damn stupid to me. How hard is it to get a movie scored these days? Maybe we'll actually get a full score by Gregson-Williams for the eventual director's cut DVD and they can dispense with the re-used stuff  .

I'm actually really surprised he didn't go back to Hans Zimmer, given the fantastic work Zimmer did for him on "Gladiator", and how Ridley Scott keeps saying this is his second "Gladiator"-like film.

Seriously. You spend so many hundreds of milllions shooting the film, which includes an incredibly detailed, incredibly LARGE, full scale replica of portions of ancient Jerusalem, but you're too friggin' cheap to pay someone to write a score??

I've been on the fence about whether or not to see this. This is honestly enough to drive me away.

Gregson-Williams score on CD is a very good listen. No, there isn't a Braveheart or Gladiator type theme, but it is amazingly cohessive and all the percussion work is live as well, which is nice to hear.

Zimmer was origianlly hired to score the film, but he recommended HGW to Ridley Scott and HGW switched from doing Madagascar to this. Zimmer is now scoring Madagascar. Probably a wise move, since HGW has done a handful of animated films now and has never really done a big epic like KoH, while Zimmer has done plenty of big films, but not many (if any?) animated films.

HGW had 6 months to write this score, so I can't understand the use of the non-original music either. Scott must have thought it was absolutely perfect for the scenes they're used in and asked HGW not to write anything for those scenes (that's pure conjecture though)

Besides all that, the CD is all HGW's original work and is definately worth buying.

I heard the 13th Warrior theme in there. It was well placed, and I love the music. Of course you feel like they are ripping off other films, but hey its still good music. I didnt notice any others besides 13th Warrior. The actual score, which is basically the entire movie is very fanatastic! Oscarworthy. I am definately buying it.

I didn't notice them, but unless the music is especially great or exceedingly distracting, I usually pay no attention to it. Neither was the case here.

I just bought the score and listened to it, pure brilliance. It is amazing!!!
