Horror movie clichés to avoid

Hey guys,

we're prepping a horror movie project for the summer, and because we'd like to go in a different direction, we try to avoid all (or most of the) typical horror movie cliches. So, you could be a great help with just posting what is too typically present in horror movies.

examples:

- the phone is always dead
- there's never an answer to "hello, anybody in here?"
- killers wear masks or are horribly deformed
- there's always a calm and shy person, a macho ass, a babe and a shy girl - the shy ones survive
- cats and friends tend to pop up without any sign of entrance
- cops are either )always too late or )stupid and die
- psychopathic killers with special dresses or masks can enter good visited places without being seen
- a killer's voice is always )distorted or )sounds rusty
- if a person wears a knife, everytime you see it it makes the sound of two knives touching each other
- sex & drugs? death
- the typical "opening kill"

Even if you're an olympic gold medalist sprinter, somehow a killer can awlays catch up to you, even if he's strolling along at a nice casual pace.

When a group of friends enter a spooky place and one of them gets the ever so infamous idea of splitting up, expect the body count to rise.

I've noticed that supernatural killers usually kill with next to no motive or reason, besides they otherwise enjoy it or a mindless. Killers without powers usually have a deep psychological conflict that drives them. In other words, if you notice somebody with a mental imbalance is bugging you, call the paddywagon and don't expect them to just go away afater they've picked off one or two of your family or friends.
If they're supernatural killers... you're F&#ked.

Pre-marrital/teenage/unprotected... pretty much any sex of any kind tends to get people killed. *shakes head* One day somebody will have the bright idea of basing a horror movie in a porn studio... hoorah! Probably already done though... *heads to video store*

Characters always tripping over the invisible tree branch;

And please, no nightmares; or nightmares within a nightmare.

I don't think there is anything wrong with cliche. If you avoid everything you posted, and you avoid everything that others posted, what are you planning on?

You don't have to give plot points, but what do you have in mind? Just curious...

make sure if its in an old house that the house hasnt been built over an old indian graveyard (or any other graveyard for that matter) and if the people are scared in the first place and someone says lets split up, make sure someone whacks that person in the back of the head. Also dont let the torch suddenly go out just before the killer attacks..god I could go on forever............

Scenes that go kinda like this:

Character on their own. Get a creepy feeling. The lights are inexplicably dim. Look around.. the windows open, can hear the wind.. shut it.. still got a creepy feeling.. music builds up.. louder.. louder.. close up on characters face, clearly in panic, louder.. louder.. louder.louder. louderlouder LOUD NOISE oh it's just their friend who's snooping round in the dark for no apparent reason.

There's the obligatory crazy man / gypsy woman / psychic that knows all about what's going to happen and warns the unsuspected victims.

use these ideas in your movie:

daytime horror; to much killing at night

no supernatural powers; sometimes people are just crazy

cliched victims (hoes, blacks, stupid cops) should survive

definately no music cues; if you want to scare someone dont let them know its coming

the killer shouldn't have the greatest karma in the world; make him work for the victims
