I also think the third one was the best, but the first two did have this "charm" that the third one doesn't have. I can't explain what I mean excactly.
The third is the best cause it was more than just the book on screen. I thought it was extremely good made, great sets and mood, amazing camera work (the bit where harry and hermoine are chased by werewolf Lupin is my favourit part of the movie, really wonderful especially in the theater), and the tone was just great.

I realize I don't venture into this forum too often (and for good reason too ;) ) but my favorite would have to be 'Prisoner of Azkaban'. I felt it was the best because it just wasn't so kiddy like the first two were, even though it strayed away from the book so much (at least as far as I can remember, I've never re-read that one).
I think the fourth film will be the best though, simply for the fact that IV was my favority novel.

I personally like Chamber of Secrets... I think its the music, the storyline (do not think I liked the ending to that movie. I don't give if Hagrid "died" or not.), the acting, and how well it was done. I think out of all the Harry Potter books, it was the one that portrayed the novel perfectly well onscreen. And the deleted scenes are the cremé brulé of it all. :D

Its tie between Prisoner of Azkaban and Sorcerers Stone. Azkaban had a great look to it and i thought it should have made alot more money. If that was a November release it would have passed Chamber of secrets.
Still I really thought the Original Potter film was one of the great movies that year. I though Snape and Hagrid was protrayed better in the first film. It had a great pace and it seemed longer than it was. I can't say if Sorcerers Stone is the best film of the franchise for Azkaban was a great film Emma Watson really stole that movie and so didn't David Thewlis as Lupin.

Ugh. I can't believe you guys like Prisoner of Azkaban best. I thought it was the worst of the three movies. First, it strayed away from the other two movies so much.. what, suddenly Hagrid's cabin is not just outside the gates, but now it's way down over a suddenly mountainous England? Um.. yeahh.. ok..
Second, it got so far away from the book, it could have been a completely different movie. When did Malfoy become a blithering idiot? He was always menacing before, but now he's running from everything and crying about it. Um, WRONG. And when did they stop wearing their robes??? Doesn't book 4 make a big deal out of how wizards aren't good at dressing like muggles? But now they're not only dressing like muggles but trendy muggles no less?
The first two movies kept the charm of the first two books, which is how it should be. My favorite movie though would be the first one. Can't beat Harry's discovering he's a wizard.

- as a novel, Azkaban was the best - as a movie, I think I liked the second one a bit better - not by much though - all that time travel was very clever and the Dimentors were pretty cool. I just felt there was a lot left out of the third one.

the first 2 movie's were faithful to the book yet felt stail. bad acting, bad directing. they only thing that saved them was the great vision of the HP world and some great acting by the adult actors, especially kenneth brannagh as lockhart.
I agree that a lot of the POA story was stripped away for the movie. But i can live with that. you need to express the most profound part of the book, which is the story between sirius and harry, not the quidditch cup for example.
I agree that Malfoy has become a wimp but when was he not a wimp? he's a weasel and always has been. In a way, his portrayal in POA was more accurate, especially in the scene where buckbeak attacks him and where he's talking to pansy about how he could have lost his arm.
And terabyte, who really gives a **** what they dress like.

Yes a lot of people hate the third movie because they are thinking that these movies can be made into 8 hour movies so they can be exactly like the book. I agree with red when I say the first two were closest to the books but they were not at all as entertaining as the third one. Yes the third one left out a lot but that's the movie business. Things need to be taken out and things have to be changed. I don't know how long ago you read the books but Draco is a little pansy in them. When Buckbeak attacks him in the books he says "he's dying". In the woods while they are in the Forbidden forest in the 1st book/movie. He runs away screaming when Harry is attacked. Malfoy is a daddy's boy and cares about no one's safety but his own. And personally I like the way everything is set up in the third movie. The Whopping Willow is actually by the forest instead of in the middle of a courtyard like the second movie. And yes I would have liked to have the Moony, Prongs, Wormtail, Padfoot, storyline in there because that's one of the things I liked best about the third book but it wasn't and I don't have to depend on a movie to get it. All I have to do is go read the book. People have to understand that the movies are not the books. They can't and never well be. And in the books I can remember the kids wearing regular clothes. And the question as to why they are trendy well it's a movie like I said.
Also thanks red. ;)

I like Prisoner of Azkaban better than the first two. I felt they all were in tone with the books, and they all have J.K.'s blessing, which is always a big step. I thought Azkaban needed to do what it did, except cutting all but one Quidditch match. in the book it was the first time WE see Griffyndor win the Quidditch Match. I loved the cast, and the visuals. It felt like a better fantasy movie than the second one, and had a cooler feel than the first one. I felt the first one to be too "young" a movie, and the second one felt like a proving grounds that they could make super special effects to compete with Lord of the Rings. It wasn't needed. The only cool effect was the Basilisk. Well, enough with my rant...GoF will rule.

Just saying that something is a movie doesn't mean that it should deviate from the established story and characters as much as they did. Malfoy was always a threatening little snot with his peers, but would suck up to adults, take advantage of anything he could, and blackmail other kids to get his way. But run from Hermione just because she punched him? I don't see J.K. Rowling writing that. It's not in keeping with his character. He would have sneered at her that he was going to turn her in for assault, and possibly taken her to court with his Dad's money, or challenged her to a Wizard's duel like he does in the fourth book (remember when he turns into a ferret?)
And part of the appeal of this type of movie in the first place is to see a book you loved brought to life. Saying "Well, that's Hollywood for you" doesn't cut it anymore. Look at Lord of the Rings. Had they changed the clothes type, the villains' personalities, and the map of the set from movie to movie, they wouldn't have been as good as they were.

Yeah but they filmed all 3 movies at the same time. Little hard to change the scenery in the middle of a shoot. First off that was my take on why a lot of people here like the 3rd movie. I didn't say it had to appeal to you. I was just trying to make you see it from their and/or my view. A perfect example of a "that's hollywood" for you from LOTR is Aragorns fake death in TTT. Unnecesary and stupid. But hey it was in their for effect. Just like some things in HP.
About the Malfoy thing:
"She had slapped Malfoy across the face with all the strength she could muster. Malfoy staggered. Harry, Ron, Crabbe, and Goyle stook flabbergasted as Hermione raised her hand again." Skip down a little...
"Hermione pulled out her wand. Malfoy stepped backward. Crabbe and Goyle looked at him for instructions, thoroughly bewildered. "C'mon," Malfoy muttered, and in a moment, all three of them had disappeared into the passageway to the dungeons."

Interesting take on it Uni. However, you don't really address the fact that they changed the whole movie and overall feel of Harry Potter, rather than just the odd scene in LOTR. Not to mention that fact that they didn't want to change the scenery (and hence, the overall feel of the movie) from one movie to the next. Peter Jackson wanted LOTR to be a coherent series. Unlike, apparently, Harry Potter's director(s).
And thanks for posting that quote about Malfoy. It proves my point exactly. Malfoy sneers, he growls, and he skulks away. He does not run away like that director had him doing in the third movie. In the movie, Malfoy practically screamed like a little girl, completely out of character. ;)

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best, by far.
It was the one that *truly* captured the essence of Hogwarts; that trademark awkwardness that infests its corridors, grounds and classes. ("Flight of the Fat Lady" scene showed this to great degree, not to mention every scene the Whomping Willow was in).
The one who was done NOT for the sake of doing it and raking some money for WB, but to truly represent Cuaron's and Kloves' vision of the book.
The one with the truly magical and inspired John Williams score.
The one with the magical moments.(Buckbeak's First Flight with Harry is, to this day, my absolute favorite scene of any HP film...it left me gasping with awe in the theater and it still induces goosebumps at home)
As for the people who complain about changes to the layout of Hogwarts grounds, my say is: About damn time! The first two films showed Hogwarts grounds too sterile and without "magic", in my book. The scenery now presented is more dangerous, provocative, magical and it feels more *real*. I loved every inch of Hogwarts reimagined look, as you can tell.
The clothes dillema is another storm in a glass of water (IMO), as the book illustrations by Mary Grand-Pré depicted Harry and his friends in "normal" clothes, covered most of the time by the now familiar black robe, so the POA crew wasnt that far off the line.
Deal with it: its a book ADAPTATION, not a book REPRODUCTION.

Prisoner of Azkaban by far
if you say it sucked because it strayed to much from the book...i have to disagree with you there, it had all the important parts of the book in it which is all that is needed really, if every single detail from the book was put in the movie, it would be extremely long, it wouldn't be as good aswell, we all want to see every thing yes but you have to realize that a movie and a book are two COMPLETELY different mediums
a book can develop more on charater development, story and stuff because it is long, while a movie is only short, it has to develop on theme instead and setting, which is what Alfonso did and he made it a much more darker movie which was perfect for the movie, it had the right mood and tone to it, might i also add that POA had the best music so far
you want to see how different they are, watch the trailer for SS/PS COA then watch the trailer for POA...

I liked all three...the first two in a different way than the third....because of the obvious changes and what not both directors made.
POA does have many -glitches- in it...and left out quite a lot of detail, but I still liked the dark tone.

they could've done w/out the shrunken head...that's my #1 gripe about the movie.
They SHOULD've added more of the orgin of Mauder's map and should've explained more of Padfoot, WormTail, Mooney and Prongs...AND more quidditch scenes, IMO.
Griff's winning the game, c'mon that's more important than a couple of boys in their dorm room making animal noises.

And thanks for posting that quote about Malfoy. It proves my point exactly. Malfoy sneers, he growls, and he skulks away. He does not run away like that director had him doing in the third movie. In the movie, Malfoy practically screamed like a little girl, completely out of character. ;)
but what about the part when Buckbeak attacked him ;)
"I'm dying!" Malfoy yelled as the class panicked. "I'm dying look at me! It's killed me!"

^^
I'm sorry, but if that doesn't sound like a screaming little girl, I don't know wtf does.
I felt sick when I saw how Malfoy was portrayed...like he was blubbering idiot who wouldn't stop *****ing...but after re-reading POA...yeah..the character does fit.
He puts his guard down anytime he himself is in danger and turns off his sly, tough guy demeanor to reveal his true cowardly self.

Azkaban is my favorite by far...I've just got done watching it again.
It really bothered me that they didn't expalin the Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs part. It would have taken an extra two minutes at the end of the film.
The scenes with Lupin and Harry are the best. Lupin is my favorite charcter in the books and I thought the actor who played him [struggling for the name..grrrr] did a good job.

Apparently yes.
Personally I always imagined him to be the tough guy, ******* his father is but that's just wishful thinking :p
I was just trying to understand terabyte25's logic when he/she said it was out of character for Draco to be a wimpy cry baby.

I totally agree.
I'm glad Thewlis didn't end up playing Prof. Quirrell

The best was POA.
It fixed all the problems in the first 2 (ie. the whomping willow being inside the castle walls, Hagrids Hut not being alongside the forbidden Forest.) Also it was the first movie that told a story and didn't just put a bunch of scenes together.
Also Quidditch was so over done in the first 2 I'm glad they didn't focus too much on it in POA.
As for the boys making animal noises it showed something that was present in the books but never in the movies, the kids acting like kids. In the first 2 movies you never got the feeling that they were kids, everything was made to feel so important that there was no time given for thecharecters to act like kids. The fact that they were still kids was all over the books... anytime someone came into the common room there was some sort of "magical comedy" going on... usually from the twins and their joke shop. The Scene with them acting like animals was one of the most important scenes in the book, certinly more important than yet another overdone quidditch scene.
My only complaint was that they didn't go into the origin of the Marauders Map and the identities of Mooney, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs.

Prisoner of Azkaban. No competition. I have this argument with Daniel (my B-I-L) everytime I mention Harry Potter. He just doesn't get it.
Although, I do enjoy watching Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of secrets every now and then. They were so little!! So adorable!
heh.

I wanna fly to canada..........
I liked Prisoner of Azkaban the best cause it's new and it was pretty cool.
I also liked Chamber of Secrets too, cause of the whole snake thing, Dolby (however you spell his name) and how they changed into different people.
But I don't like The Sorcerer's Stone cause I watched it too many times. :P

I liked Prisoner Of Azkaban the best.
It finally showed how Hogwarts is supposed to be. Dark, gloomy, and gothic. The movie did a wonderful job of showing that these kids are maturing as teenagers and their attitudes are changing. These aren't those nice little kids anymore, they're maturing teenagers going through what teenagers go through. The camera work was very unique especially towards the end of the movie. The dementors were very well designed and they worked perfectly on screen. Out of all three so far, this has stayed truest to the tone and spirit of the book it's being adapted from. I applaud Alfonso Cuaron for crafting such a unique vision for this movie 10/10.

I liked the first two best. I thought it was better than POA when there was just a bunch of scenes chucked together with no explanation. If I'd seen the movie without reading the book I would have had no idea what was going on.

yeh it was a bit confusing but hey i liked it (tho i'd read the books). except for the Lupin sensitivity bridge scene. what was that? he went all sensitive and started talking about harry's mother - it was sooo weird. the head was so annoying but everything else was okay even tho they'd changed a lot of stuff.
the dementors or buckbeak flying were probably the best bits, imo. it was cool the way the windows went all cloudy, and its hand was kinda scary. they did look really like LotR black riders, tho.

Yes the Lupin bit confused me too. THAT wasn't in the book! The dementors weren't at all what I'd imagined either. And who said they could fly?

The third was better than the first two by far imo......for starters it was an actual movie.....the first two were just a bunch of scenes that were related to harry potter......Alfonso created a movie that flowed and told a story....and the images backgrounds and the scenery were absolutely stunning

the whole Lupin Lily thing didn't bother me...considering I always thought Lily had helped him out with the werewolf thing and probably stood up for him in some shape or form
I guess it was fine by JK...I mean, she watched over the movie and seemed to OK it.
