It was okay - you have to go to South America with an understanding that no matter how long it's been around, you're not going to have the same creature comforts as the US. For instance, the villa we were staying in - no hot water, no AC. granted, it was breezy and warm enough that cool water was refreshing but hardly what you'd call "VACATION" in the traditional sense of the word.

Colombia's actually a lot less expensive than you might think. Depending on where you're flying from, flights are generally a lot cheaper than flights to Europe. Hotels/Villas are also pretty affordable as are meals. The first night we were there we had a top notch steak dinner in the nicest restaurant in town for less than $70 per couple.

Another good cheapy - Costa Rica - you'll get beaches, volcanos and rain forest all for a LOT less than you'd think.

Yeah - it's the kind of thing you just need to know beforehand. I was under the impression (as was my girl friend in the wine picture) that we were going on 'vacation' to one of the "most beautiful cities in the world" (as described by our boyfriends). They failed to mention we'd be without creature comforts. It's MUCH easier to appreciate the trip now that I'm back home.

Costa Rica is beautiful by the way, and if you speak spanish - or are traveling with someone who does - there's almost no limit to the deals you can find. I've had friends that have rented entire 5 bedroom beach houses like right on the sand for something like $25 per person per day. You've just got to keep asking around until you find a good deal.

Me on my 46th birthday in February - I'd just woken up in a completely different hospital than I'd checked into from a week of unconciousness due to septicemia and pneumonia - I blew up like a balloon, my kidneys had stopped working and I had dialysis, I was on a respirator and also a feeding tube, and i had three I.V.'s pumping fluids and antibiotics into my veins.

i live in clearwater (tampa) so i am off to the beach a lot too. this has been good weather for the beach during the winter. usually in the jan time it is too cold, but it was unusually warm this year
