I realized that we don't have a battle thread for the great directors, so I decided to make one. In the first round, the people will vote, and in the second round I might get judges to whom you would appeal, sort of like the Battle of the Bands thread.

Round One, Battle 1

Cecil B. DeMille

http://www.cyranos.ch/spmille.jpg

Cecil B. DeMille was one of the great epic filmmakers of our time. His biblical epics, including King of Kings (1927) and The Ten Commandments (1923 and 1956), are some of the most acclaimed cinematic interpretations of the Bible. DeMille was so respected by the international community that his name was chosen for an award that would recognize outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. DeMille was the recipient of the first award, possibly making him the only person in history to receive an award named after him. DeMille is also notable as being the only filmmaker to remake two of his films (The Ten Commandments and The Squaw Man).

vs.

John Woo

http://sphax666.free.fr/WOO/woo/JOHN/John_Woo.jpg

John Woo is one of a handful of foreign filmmakers who have found mainstream success in the United States, without having to compromise their visions. He directed his first film in 1973, and directed films in a variety of genres, before he found his niche: ultra-violent, stylized gangster pictures. This supreme sense of style and the fluidity of motion made The Killer and Hard Boiled contemporary classics. The look and feel of these films can also be seen in some of Woo's American films, such as Face/Off and Mission: Impossible II.

I remember there was a battle awhile ago, but it disappeared after a few weeks (maybe I am wrong).

Even if it did work out, I don't want to just give this up, I spent a lot of time getting a list of directors together and pairing them off.

I was just watching Face/Off last night, actually. The last time I had seen it was in 4th Grade, so it finally dawned on me how preposterous the plot is. Still, it's a very good action movie. I've always liked the fact that it seems to take itself seriously, instead of being a silly series of explosions and gun battles.

The Next Match:

ROUND ONE, BATTLE 2

Michel Gondry

http://www.jimcarreywebsite.com/michel.jpg

Michel Gondry could be called this generation's cinematic mad scientist. His music videos have been hailed for their starting originality and unconventional nature; for example, Gondry once made a music video for the White Stripes that was composed entirely of lego blocks. However, it was when Gondry turned his attention to film that he found a place in the hearts of moviegoers everywhere. His first movie, Human Nature, received mixed reviews. However, it is his second film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, that has confirmed his status as a genius; it is a film of visual panache and stunning originality, but it never loses it's sense of romantic lament, and longing.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

http://www.mediafactured.com/blog/images/eternal.jpg

vs.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet

http://www.movie-database.de/motion_pictures/alien4/pictures/alien_4_j_p_jeunet.jpg

In a sense, Jean-Pierre Jeunet has run the gamut in terms of his relationship with the audience. His first well-known film (Delicatessen, a futuristic satire about cannibalism), remains "for cultists only", but his most popular film, Amelie, is beloved by nearly everyone who has seen it. What binds these films, and what binds all of his seemingly independent projects, is a distinct visual sense, and Jeunet's storytelling style. Watch The City of Lost Children, for example, and you'd feel like you'd read a slightly skewed fairy tale. Even his most panned film, Alien Resurrection, has that inimitable Jeunet feel to it.

Hey, don't yell at me because I've only seen Resurrection if you've only seen Eternal Sunshine and Human Nature. Gondry's music videos are probably the most key part of his filmmaking history, and they are all amazing.

Citizen Kane
01-12-2005, 11:43 PM
I've seen both of his theatrical films, and I think my exposure to them is sufficient to make a judgment on his style and aesthetics.

The thing that frustrates me is that you happened to see the one film that sort of hampered Jeunet's style; the lyricism and darkly fanciful elements I see in all of his films didn't quite work when he was forced to use a script written by somebody else, and designed not to cater to his particular skills, but to please the fans of Alien.

01-13-2005, 12:12 AM

ROUND ONE, BATTLE THREE

Frank Capra

http://www.ijpc.org/Capra%20speech_files/Capra.jpg

The word Capra-esque generally has a negative connotation these days, but people forget the sentimental powers of a Frank Capra film. Who hasn't cried during It's A Wonderful Life? Who hasn't been inspired by the filibuster scene from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Such are examples of Capra's divine talent. There are few directors who can elicit an emotional response from all viewers, and Capra is surely the one of the best of them. As John Ford said, "A great man and a great American, Frank Capra is an inspiration to those who believe in the American Dream."

It's A Wonderful Life

vs.

Michael Curtiz

http://www.born-today.com/Today/pix/curtiz_m.jpg

The stock in trade of Michael Curtiz was Hollywood movies. The Adventures of Robin Hood and Yankee Doodle Dandy became extremely popular in the late 30's and early 40's, as wholesome but enjoyable entertainment. Then came a little movie called Casablanca, and things changed. Curtiz would never quite equal the heights of his masterpiece (although We're No Angels is a minor classic), but Casablanca had put him on the map as a great filmmaker. To this day, he is still remembered.

Trust me, it isn't. It's not even close. It is a mere fraction of the filmmaker. And as I told you, I could assume that Jeunet has made 20 great films, 40 great films, 100 great films, most of which could become my favorite all-time, and I would still think of Gondry as the more interesting and superior filmmaker.

ROUND ONE, BATTLE FOUR

Joel and Ethan Coen

http://www.enquirer.com/editions/2001/01/11/coen.jpg

The undisputed masters of dark comedy, Joel and Ethan Coen have risen from humble beginnings, with the noir film Blood Simple and the skewed caper movie Raising Arizona, to being respected as some of the greatest and most unique filmmakers of our age. The Coen Brothers deftly tackle a variety of genres in their films, from romantic comedy to film noir to period pieces. The one thing that unites all of their films is a certain style--a certain sense of humor, and a wildly original and delightful style of writing. It is these directorial imprints that set the films of Joel and Ethan Coen apart from other movies.

vs.

Richard Linklater

http://www.filmcritic.com/misc/mepics.nsf/view/link2/$File/link2.gif

NOTE: I saw this on IMDb and realized that it could summarize Linklater's work better than I ever could, so here it is:

Self-taught writer-director Richard Linklater was among the first and most successful talents to emerge during the American independent film renaissance of the 1990s. Typically setting each of his movies during one 24-hour period, Linklater's work explored what he dubbed "the youth rebellion continuum," focusing in fine detail on generational rites and mores with rare compassion and understanding while definitively capturing the 20-something culture of his era through a series of nuanced, illuminating ensemble pieces which introduced any number of talented young actors into the Hollywood firmament. Born in Houston, Texas, Linklater suspended his educational career at Sam Houston State University in 1982, to work on an offshore oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He subsequently relocated to the state's capital of Austin, where he founded a film society and began work on his debut short film, 1987's It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (1988). Three years later he released the sprawling Slacker (1991), an insightful, virtually plotless look at 1990s youth culture that became a favorite on the festival circuit prior to earning vast acclaim at Sundance in 1991. Upon its commercial release, the movie, made for less than $23,000, became the subject of considerable mainstream media attention, with the term "slacker" becoming a much-overused catch-all tag employed to affix a name and identity to America's disaffected youth culture.
