LONDON (Reuters) - An unexplained radio signal from deep space could -- just might be -- contact from an alien civilisation, New Scientist magazine reported on Thursday.
The signal, coming from a point between the Pisces and Aries constellations, has been picked up three times by a telescope in Puerto Rico.

New Scientist said the signal could be generated by a previously unknown astronomical phenomenon or even be a by-product from the telescope itself.

But the mystery beam has excited astronomers across the world.

"If they can see it four, five or six times it really begins to get exciting," Jocelyn Bell Burnell of the University of Bath in western England told the magazine.

It was broadcast on the main frequency at which the universe's most common element, hydrogen, absorbs and emits energy, and which astronomers say is the most likely means by which aliens would advertise their presence.

The potentially extraterrestrial signals were picked up through the SETI@home project, which uses programmes running as screensavers on millions of personal computers worldwide to sift through the huge amount of data picked up by the telescope.

let's assume another species exists (another species=what you call aliens), why would we have to fear them? if they aren't human than i doubt they have the same characteristics that we have, not to mention the look and intelligence. you know it is in human nature to control things, to accroach and humanify everthing that exists on this planet...but the question is, how different are these species from us humans?
maybe they have different urges and interessts, something that isn't power or money or property...

Whether aliens (extra-terrestrials) are trying to contact us or not, I do believe that they exist.

I know that it is not the greatest argument to back up one's opinion with quotations from a movie, BUT....to paraphrase Contact...

"There are literally billions of stars in the known universe. If one out of every million of those had life, and if one out of every million of those had intelligent life, there would be millions of planets out there with intelligent life. So, if we are alone in the Universe, it seems like an awful waste of space."

Consider this: The nearest star system is over 4 light years away. If they are visiting us, they must have Star Trek-esque technology. Not even light-speed travel is practical for inter-galactic space travel. We're talking about some serious high-tech stuff.
This would have to be a well-evolved society...a society that saw its industrial revolution several thousand years ago at least.

Why would such an advanced civilization use thousands of years of research to develop the ultimate inter-stellar space travel ship and come to earth.....just to abduct some random people, give anal probes, and make some crop circles? Not going to happen.

Thirdly, this planet has to be just far enough away and not too far away from the sun so that intelligent life can be sustained e.g earth. and there are a loads of other factors that i cant think of now.

Who says Aliens need water? Who says Aliens can live on planets of pure Lava or Ice? Really we won't know if it's possible till we find that it's possible and we'll never know if it's not possible.

However, who is to say that in another 100, 500, or 1000 years we won't have the ability to travel to other stars quickly. Although it seems like Science Fiction now, there is no way to know that it would never happen.
