Why is there no "official" topic for this game? I know I cant be the only one eagerly awaiting this. With all the mods and multiplayer I will never be bored again! Anyways we should post updates and stuff in this thread, because the game should be close to coming out with that Steam preload thing. Oh well, when its great.

Probably before November. Because:
Valve have leased their tecnoligy around. To games like
- Vampires - Bloodlines
- Medal Of Honor
But in the agreement they signed when creating their games was that they couldnt release them before Half life 2 was released. Vampires was "ready" a while ago, but when the first delay of halflife 2 came, they had to wait. So they used the time to polish and add content to the game. But now they have come with an official release date for Vampires. That is in the middle of october. Which means they have been in contact with Valve and agreed on this. That they can release the game then.
This must also mean that Valve must be ready to release their game (halflife) before Vampires. If they wasnt, they wouldnt have agreed with Vampires' release date.
Of cource, you never know, but this is most likely.

I'm guessing it will release at the end of September, or some time in October. Despite the crazy scam and spam of it's preload happening last Monday, it's in the process of doing so regardless. Preloading is usually a sign of a game's completion, and no doubt it'll probably release sometime soon.

A release candidate will be given to UV on September 15th, if they agree to the version expect it to go gold that date, with a wait of no more then 30 days. If it is not accepted valve must go back, fix what they can and resubmit. 15th of Sept is the day.

I am really looking forward to this now more than ever, a hadn't played the original in a while, and had never beaten it, but a friend lent me blue shift and opposing forces and those are both really cool. Now, HL2 is second most wanted in my book, behind halo 2.
Malitos_Sahkir
09-08-2004, 11:17 PM
Bah, I really think Halo 2 will be over-shadowed this year by Half-Life 2 and Killzone.
Abit more on the pre-gold September 15th thing:
"We're currently planning to send release candidates to Vivendi by September 15th," Valve marketing man Doug Lombardi said last week. "However, VUG hasn't given us a ship date yet. Might be best for you to ask them directly."
Unsurprisingly, Vivendi's response was "No comment," in light of a Wedbush Morgan report issued last week that put the game on store shelves in November. Commenting on the potential success of PC games this year, analyst Michael Pachter said that his firm expected three PC games to pass the one-million-unit threshold, including "November's Vivendi-Universal (V-Not Rated) release Half-Life 2."
So, is it October or November? Or April 2007???

Eh, I don't blame you. Nothing memorable has come out this year yet, and two of the biggest games have flopped ( Driv3r, Doom 3 ).
Nothing? Far Cry was miles better then doom3, and it was a very good game. except from the mp part. Battlefield Vietnam was a kickass multiplayer game. And so was UT2004. Just plain brilliance. Maybe not the best graphics on Battlefield, but the gameplay rocked. Ninja Gaiden was a good game for X-box. Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow was good looking, good Single player, and one of the most original Multiplayer created this year (if not the most original).Riddick, escape from Butcher bay for xbox made a huge impression on many people.
Well, thats some, just to get you back on track ;) But there is more. Just cant think of more right now :)

Andrey83
09-09-2004, 12:30 PM
Yes, there will be a standard deathmatch mode. Just as in the original. Other then that, there wont be anything special from what i know. If you are reffering to counter strike, then that will be released at a later date from the mod team who are also working with people from valve.

They have very sketchy about the online details, and we haven't heard a word about Team Fortress 2 in years. I really dont want to get my hopes up, but HL1 came with Team Fortress Classic, maybe HL2 will do the same.
Andrey83
09-09-2004, 04:38 PM
Yeah, i've been thinking about that. But since they havent said anything i'm not sure. They have been "working" on TF2 since HL2 first came out. First they developed it to the HL1 engine. I wouldnt be surprised if this project was canceled. In fear that they wont be able to compete with the upcoming release of Counter Strike Source. But maybe, maybe we will see TF2 Released with HL2. Maybe :)

New article up at IGN
Apart from just when the game will be in our eager hands (or live on our systems), whether or not multiplayer will be included in Half-Life 2 has been one of the biggest questions about the game. While Valve has so far implied that Half-Life 2's multiplayer mode is simply Counter-Strike: Source, nothing specific or official had been announced.
However, Halflife2.net today posted an interview with PC Gamer's Chuck Osborn, who happens to be among the first to review the final game. And there, in the interview, Osborn gives us an answer: "Counter-Strike Source is the multiplayer." No separate deathmatch. Just CS: Source.
Of course, Half-Life 2 will be getting full mod treatment from the rabid game community. Given that Counter-Strike itself began life as a Half-Life mod, don't be surprised if we see some great multiplayer ideas emerging from Half-Life 2 tinkerers sometime after the game finally hits.
Not to be a jackass but I told you so ;)

Are you sure that there will be a review at that time? I'm guessing that is a preview (basicly in this case, a review of the beta). Because HL2 have not gone gold yet. So that meens it is still a beta. Ergo not finished (officially).
When the game goes gold, it will probably take 1-2 weeks before its out in the store.
Where did you hear this?
Edit: Also the game isnt rated yet, which also meens it havent gone gold. As a game doesnt get rated before it turns to gold-status. And a review of a beta isnt a review. Its a preview.

Yes, you read that right.
We can't hold back our excitement any longer - Half-Life 2 is reviewed in the next issue of PC Gamer, on sale Oct 5. Our UK exclusive features eight pages on the biggest game ever to hit the PC. We have not confirmed this with PC Gamer yet, but we will shortly. Thanks to E. Plant aka Shed for the heads-up.

Half-Life 2 Receives A ERSB Rating
9/24/2004 6:07 PST |
In a new trailer (which looks a lot like the HL2 2004 Trailer, just in .wmv format) that was released recently many people have noted that at the start of the clip there is a M Rating.
Now for Half-Life fans it doesn't really come as a shock, but at least it puts to rest the really old rumors of VALVe toning it down for a T Rating.

from ign.com
September 29, 2004 - Valve's Gabe Newell has announced the various ways the hugely anticipated Half-Life 2 will be packaged. As our readers will already know, the game will be available for purchase either through standard retail or through Valve's online distribution service, Steam.
The Steam packages can be purchased starting next week. A few nifty tidbits: users who order any of the packages from Steam will receive a full version of Counter-Strike: Source right away. Also, it looks like Day of Defeat: Source is tucked into a few packages, too. It looks like a dream for many is going to be a reality.
Whether you go Steam or bricks 'n' mortar, you'll have to make some choices as to just how much Valve goodness you'd like. I mean, there is a Half-Life 2 hat included in one of these.
Here's the official breakdown:
Retail Boxes
* Standard Edition: Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike: Source. Ships on six CDs, in one of three boxes (Gordon, Alyx or the G-Man).
* Collector's Edition: Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life: Source, a Half-Life 2 T-shirt and a Prima book sampler. Ships on a single DVD.
Steam Packages
* Bronze: Half-Life 2* and Counter-Strike: Source.
* Silver: Half-Life 2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam.
* Gold: Half-Life 2*, Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life: Source*, Day of Defeat: Source*, Valve's back catalog currently available on Steam, Complete Strategy Guide from Prima Games, three different Half-Life 2 posters, Half-Life 2 hat, Half-Life 2 postcard, Half-Life 2 stickers, Half-Life 2 Soundtrack CD, and a chance to win a trip to Valve (one trip offered for every 5000 Gold packages purchased).
*Available upon product's release.
Though the wait has been long, it looks like once Half-Life 2 does hit, it's going to be in style. Assuming legal conflicts do not too much tangle up proceedings, we should see Half-Life 2 very soon indeed.

Hmmm....thats most strange. The official Site havent got a rating up yet. Strange. And I contacted the Admin today of that site and asked if the game had gone Gold, and he said no, not yet.
So if the game isnt gold, then its not finished. And then by the definition, its called preview. This all seems strange. I dont know anymore whats going on :)

The game is done, a RC has been sent to VUG and therefore Valve, creators and funders for all of HL2 creation, have let a magazine reviewer play the game. VUG will not release a gold statement until Valve agrees to not release HL2 via steam, reason for the trial on OCT8th and the final one March 25th. VUG has 4 months to do something with HL2 though, its really 6 months but that would be a major money lost. As of now all the packages are set, CS: Source will be released first, then maybe HL: S, DOD: S, and finally HL2 when all is settled. HL2 will not be avaible through steam till it is on the shelves. With each package you buy you get the game as soon as it is released. This week coming CS: S is said to be released, we will see.. HL2 has a rating of M.

The thing about half life is the gameplay.

Ah, i just bought HL2 Silver today through steam.
Its a very good offer for me (comparing to Norwegian prices). Price in Norway for the normal HL2 (bronze) is about 75 $. This was 59 $.
What you get in the silver package:
HL2
HL1 Source (i'm realy looking forward to play HL1 on the source engine!!)
CS: Source
Day of defeat: Source
Counterstrike Condition Zero (will probably never play it, but included is included :) )
Condition Zero Deleted scenes
Opposing Force
HL1 (normal)
HL Deathmatch
Team fortress classic
Codename Gordon (i have no idea what this is)
+some other thing i dont know what was.
The best thing about the package is that you get HL1 Source included as well imo (apart from HL2 of cource!!) :)

why? Because you get it:
1) 25 $ cheaper (no dont give be some crap now, i live in Norway: Different prices then you)
2) More content
3) HL1 On source (meaning if HL2 doesnt life up i can still play the best game ever on updated graphics) - Not in the regular edition.

Looks ****ty :nono:. Whats so ****ty looking about? The realistic facial animation, the realistic ragdoll physics, the smooth skeletal animation in models, the great particle effects? Don't compare CS: Source to Half-Life 2, they are entirely two different things. Half-Life 2 is not a direct port, it has higher resolution for textures, higher poly count on models, the facial animation seen in the models, and of course the good ol BUMP MAPPING! The only thing I was a little disappointed in was the shadows but they are still better then most of the games out there. Heres hoping you didnt base HL2 looking ****ty by comparing DOOM3 and CS: S, that would just be a fools mistake.
Andrey83
10-24-2004, 11:46 AM
You know, you should change your attitude man
And who is comparing? Comparing CS S to HL2 is like comparing Mondeo to Ford. CS S is the multiplayer aspect of HL2. They are not entirely different things. Just one piece of advice. If you are going to have this "tough-guy-i-know-everything" attitude, then remember to say something that is right next time.
CS:S is not a direct port either. Argue all you want.
Sure, The single player aspect of HL2 will have higher resolution texures and stuff, but thats just because they have put more time into that. Doesnt meen these are 2 entirely different things. Get things right when you throw them out like that.
And, normal mapping.

10-25-2004, 05:55 AM
I'm not looking to start a flamewar, I was just setting some facts straight to the person who said it looks ****ty. I actually do know what I am talking about and follow whats going on with Source, HL2, its packages, and the multiplayer add-ons. Its plain and obvious CS: S is the multiplayer aspect of HL2, I've known this for months. Entirely different, probably not, but graphically you will notice the difference, gameplay will most like feel the same. I said what I said because HL2 will use Source's features heavily unlike CS: S does, hencing it being an almost straight forward port, I will admit I was wrong with just a straight port. Normal mapping? I dont think so, I think doom3, farcry, unreal3, use normal but not Source, Subdivision surfaces, diffuse & specular bump maps with two of those not in CS: S is what source uses I thought. Anyways do you play cs: s?
Andrey83
10-25-2004, 12:11 PM
By all means, not wanna start a war :) I just thought you came of a bit harsh (Headhunter was kidding when he said it looked ****ty if you didnt catch the drift ;) ).
And yeah, CS:S isnt fully taking advantage of the source engine. Though i do feel they have done a decent job with a what we might could call a "semi-to-some-extend-port" :)
Yeah, i play CS:S. And i cant wait for DOD:S too. But mostly on Norwegian servers though. Do you?
I was under the impression that one of the things they implemented after the delay was normal mapping in the source engine. But now i'm not sure. Maybe we should check that up.

10-25-2004, 09:38 PM
Yeah I play CS: S, I get owned a lot.... quite a lot D:, its at those times I become a shotty wh0re :P. I live in california so I play mostly in west coast servers. I'd probably ping high in a norwegian server. You ever notice that you can unload a full clip 2 feet away and do no damage? lol. Any good death scenes yet?
I had one where I was in italy and I had only a pistol. Me and my teammate where waiting for a group of CTs and I was in the alley behind a barrel. I went out to get the CTS coming and all I see is a nade land infront of me. My teammate gets blasted into a wall and his body flys over the rail. The barrels launch into me getting me stuck in the alley, 5 CTS come up, lets just say not one person didn't hit me :P

10-26-2004, 02:26 PM
Well, i have this thing that pisses me off with the physics (though it is realistic, hehe).
I run with my grenade ready. See a guy. I am just about to toss the nade. And then this dumbass runs right in front of me and I toss the grenade in his head, and it flyes back at me. I headshot myself with my own grenade.....freakin irritating :D

Yeah, it's been released in a few places already... I'll get my copy tonight at midnight. Anyway, you can't play it until the 16th, Microsoft and Valve set-up a thing where you have to register the game with Valve's Steam system. That registering system doesn't work until the 16th, so no one will be playing until the official release-date. It's an ingenious way to combat piracy.

3 things I dont like
Takes to long to get into the action
Enemy's tend to just stand in front of you and shoot only a couple of times did I see one go for cover.
CS source is basicly the same as old CS but with better graphics.
Overall its a great game. So far id give it a 9.2/10

Plus at the start of the game that other scientist said we hadnt changed a bit.

we dont know if alex is alive or dead, that really bugged me, very few times to do i car about charactors but i care to know what happened to her (mainly down to some great voice acting and the way the charactors are) and since we just ****ed off really and she was left with a fecking exposion in her face

I agree.
If you guys have high speed internet connection you can check this out. I did some research to find out what we have seen, but aint in the game and have this list, and where you can see it:
The first name is the official name of the video when it was released (this is what the video is called - you can find them on i.e fileplanet):
Bugbait - No new locations, but in the video you have the assault rifle OICW (seen in games like soldier of fortune 2)
Barricade - Not in game
Docks - Not in game
Striders - Not in game (you might remember this from the video where the player throws first a "F" and then a "U" at the strider, as in "**** you" :) )
Traptown - This segment is not in the game - its also with combine soldiers
Tunnels - Shows another weapon. I kind of fire grenade launcher (with almost the same skin as the rifle in the game).
So if you want to check it out and be mad you didnt get this, then look :) (and be mad).
Because i have only one conclusion to all this. Valve is already working on an expansion pack and just cut some out to use there instead...thats what i think.

i think it is annoying....cause to meake this expansion pack that i think they are going to make they are going to get rid od gordon again....since...well you know...that means that we are going to have to be introduced to a new charactor and these segmants deserved to be for gordon and

The expansion will probably add multiplayer, i know theres counterstrike but it feels like they didnt want to rush the multiplayer or include it just yet.

Things that need to be done:
An expansion that continues the story, and finalises it a bit more than the open endedness that the first, AND second has caused.
More weapons. In an expansion, I want to see the weapons that they for some dumb reason discluded, that were in the first. Any additional weapons besides those would be cool too.
A remake of the first game. A REAL remake. HF:Source is lame. I want to see a remake of 2d textures, character models and gun animations. The sounds are good enough to stay the same I suppose. If they did a complete remake like that, people would buy the game alone for 30 bucks I predict.
Then lastly, they'd be very smart to include a multiplayer option with an expansion. CS:Source is just a graphic-advanced Counter Strike. Not a big deal. But it's even worse when HF2's gameplay functions and the new physics system has such great potential to make some really cool MP.

Yep thats why i feel there will definatly be a multiplayer expansion.

Um... well everything seems to run flawlessly on my current system, which has a GeForce 6800GT in it, which is pretty well priced considering the power it packs. The game runs almost as well on my other PC, which has a Radeon 9800 Pro. Either one would probably work good for this game, but the 9800pro won't have the 3.0 shaders, which HF2 uses.

question:
here are the specs for my PC-
Radeon 9800 XT
1.5 gigs of Ram
Pentium 4
3.00 GHz
ok, will I be able to play Half-life 2 with no lagging issues on the highest settings?
Fanible
11-26-2004, 01:28 AM
Yes, you should run it completely fine. There was some issues on some computer setups involving stuttering visuals and sounds, but I think they've resolved them, or are close to resolving them, in a patch just recently released.
I had a stutter or two on my system until I upgraded my drivers, but nothing near compared to what I've seen on some systems (people have uploaded videos of what's happened to the internet). It can be caused by a number of things; Too many sub programs, too little ram, antialiasing can be involved with it as well.
I had a tweak guide on the net I was looking at, but I'd have to look for it. It was an interesting read, but I havn't had any real problems with the game to try to tweak everything it advised.

Ok, I finally got Half-Life 2. Its probably the best fps I have ever played. So far I think its slightly better than Halo 2, and thats saying a lot. The graphics and gameplay are astonishing! Counter-strike source is also much better than I thought it would be. Its a fantastic game!
Fanible
11-29-2004, 04:20 AM
I just wish it had MP. The engine certainly is amasing, but most of the visuals are thanks to the 2d art team. So much of the atmosphere and areas that you come across seem so real and down to earth. It's kind of a fresh change from the constant shaders that are being incorporated that look real smooth, but not so much real. More like a smoother cartoony look (that's kinda how I felt with Doom 3). And hey! The bald men in THIS game don't have jagged pointy heads. :P
Oh, and according to the news on the Steam website, there is going to be a little "suprise" being released for us sometime this week. My personal dream of that suprise would be a MP addon, but one can only dream I imagine.

I hope they release a multiplayer add on because counterstrike is just frustrating, its dominated by the geeks who play it all day long.
Fanible
11-29-2004, 03:45 PM
Ok, the ending wasn't HORRIBLE. It's still worth playing through. It does end with a cliffhanger, however, and it's just as bad as the original. However, there is a lot of great mystery and intrigue now involved with the story line, especially if you try to play through again and miss things you didn't hear the first time around. There's a crap load of interesting mystery behind the G-Man, what government he's working for, the technology they're using, why they're using you, why it only seemed like seconds between the first game and the second, when seemingly atleast 10 years has passed... so on and so forth.
Either way, I'm not ENTIRELY sure the expansion is being worked on. There has been some posts going around that have lead people to believe that Half-Life 3 is actually being worked on. But on more realistic terms, they're probably doing it on the same engine, in which case it wouldn't take nearly as long. At most, a year or so.

I heard that the "suprise" might be Day of Defeat: Source. But its all speculation for now
Fanible
11-30-2004, 04:42 AM
I wouldn't find that to be much a suprise, as we're already expecting it to come out here soon eventually.
I guess it'd be a suprise if they end up killing the whole promotion that only Steam buyers would get HF:Source and DoD:Source, and releasing DOD to the entire public.

HF source is alreay avalible for public.
Half Life 2 collectors editon (tin box) contains HL1 Source (which was **** though!!)

whats the diff...isnt HL Source just a bit better graphics
Andrey83
11-30-2004, 01:00 PM
Oh didnt meen that way..
HL 1 source was released basicly as a marketing thinky so that more people would buy silver instead of bronze. Thats ok for me. I went on that trick. But Hl1 source is basilcy EXCACTLY the same looking as HL1 normal (which is also inlcuded in silver).
meaning you dont get anything extra which was what you paid for.
In that sense it sucks. if you get my meaning :)
I would have thought they included stuff like the new gman model. New model for the scientists, maybe the high definition pack from Blue shift.
But no, nothing at all.

TF2 really needs to come out, DM, CS, and even DOD have nothing on TF2 if it actually comes out. And I would also like to see some other stuff redone on the new engine, Front Line Force, Action Half Life, Sven Coop. Its just a matter of time before multiplayer gets better and better.

no... I've been playing counter-strike for awhile now and I'm somewhat good :D
however I know the difference between good and hacking... Alot of ppl hack! always getting headshots, know where you are every single time... etc... especially when you spectate them... you can see them staring at walls and following ppl (wallhack) speed hacking you rarely see cuz it so obvious... but wallhacking and aim bots are very common.... I think these ppl make up their own hacks or something...
Andrey83
12-08-2004, 06:09 PM
it doesnt excict to CS S. Aimbot and Walhack.
I get headshot all the time, and i meen all the time. Its so easy in CS S because the head hit box is huuuuge. Doesnt meen i cheat. Dont be so fast to judge people ;)
And also, after you play a while you get used to which corners people sit and you just automaticly fire there. I do it all the time. Still no cheat.
So.....you could try to go to the official board, but i guess you will get the same reply there :)
