The PSP was recently hacked, allowing the use of emulators. the emulators are still pretty new and are kinda slow, but the NES one works great. having literally thousands of games on your beautiful PSP screen is definalty worth the money.
say what???????????????????????????????????????????
whats an emulator pls explain

from wikipedia
A console emulator is a program for a computer, or other computing device, that can emulate a video game console or handheld, so a computer can be used to play games that were created for that console or to develop games for that console. Such tools are often used to translate games into other languages, to modify (or hack) existing games, or to produce homebrewed demos. Console emulation can also be achieved between consoles (hence cross-console emulation), making a modern video game console emulate a less advanced one.

Does anyone find it ironic that the only new games (besides excellent launch titles) worth playing on the PSP at the moment are old Nintendo ones?
I grew up with old nintendo games, no matter what system i have i will always love them. and the fact i can carry around all those games is truely awesome, the psp is the better handheld .....hands down. :P

I grew up with old nintendo games, no matter what system i have i will always love them. and the fact i can carry around all those games is truely awesome, the psp is the better handheld .....hands down.
I understand that and I hope you enjoy the PSP as your handheld of choice, for me however, the DS is looking to be my favoured one.
My PSP is getting less and less playtime (only Lumines gets my playtime), and besides using it to surf the net at times (the novelty is wearing off) and watching movies from sources other than UMD, it'll soon be finding my shelf. As a gamer I hope Sony put something on it, because I'm actually disappointed. (GT Mobile, GTA, SOCOM and all those other ports don't cut it either ...)
Now looking at the DS, the system has gone from being a gimmick at launch to a system which I actually use on my daily commute. (It also joins the iPod as one my favourite portable devices)
Right now Electroplankton, Kirby, Band Brothers and more have my attention, and with so many games coming ...
*thinks of Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Trace Memory, Under the Knife, Ace Attorney, Meteos, Advance Wars 3, Mario and Luigi 2, Snowboard Kids, Metroid Dread (2D), Metroid Pinball, Castlevania, Lost in Blue, Age of Empires, NEW Super Mario Bros., Boktai 3, Winning Eleven, Legend of Zelda, Viewtiful Joe: Scratch, Ultimate Brain Games, Nintendogs, Nanostray, Bomberman 2 (online), Sonic Rush, Zelda, Final Fantasy 3j, and Seiken Densetsu (Secret of Mana)*
... it's almost overwhelming, especially with so many being online! Here's my opinion: it's not about the system, it's about the games. And with so many quality games, the DS gets my support. Talk about the graphics, talk about all the other snazzy features, but when it comes to gaming, the DS has it over the PSP. And when it comes down to multimedia capablities, the PSP really can't compete with the other devices I have.
Nintendo said it best:
I think people enjoy playing games that are really more suited for a handheld rather than just household games that are brought to a portable platform.
To sum up, DS > PSP at this point, in my opinion.
(PS: Emulation is fine on the DS, as well. So that's another good point.)
Mr. Frodo
06-25-2005, 07:56 AM
fair enough, but i just don't "get" the DS, i mean the whole touch thing dosn't grab my attention at all. and for games, i mean we all played them before, mario... zelda... metroid... etc... and the PSP is a media center with games, movies, and music. I understand its probably not as good as an IPOD or a portable dvd player but i don't have one so for me it kills 3 birds with one stone, and the fact that i only had to pay 48 bucks for it to dosn't hurt either. lets face it the quality of the PSP overwhelms the DS. sure there are not that many games out right now but it takes time. plus the use of the PSP with the PS3 when it comes out, time will make the PSP better.

what do you mean we've played it all before?? haven't you played GTA before?? well thats coming out on psp...and so is gran turismo and metal gear and we've played all those before....=)
the DS can connect to the Revolution, =), oh these smileys can be so evil
what do you mean it only cost you $48???

too true. i dont' like the fact that all games now a days are GTA 5 or Zelda 7 etc... new games with new concepts should be made.
oh and i traded in my gba sp and like 10 gbp games and got 202 dollars in store credit at Gamers here in Lincoln so i only had to pay 48 bucks, not a bad deal huh?
btw i got my first psp game today, Lumines because it was cheap and i like puzzle games. its pretty neat.

Actually, you have a complete opposite view from what I have on the situation with the games on the DS. Look at Meteos, Band Brothers, Trace Memory, Under the Knife, Ace Attorney, Lost in Blue, Nintendogs and Nanostray. You haven't played these games before and even the same old franchises from Nintendo, Konami, etc., they are always different, evolving and transforming when they're made as portable software for portable-focused hardware. Example: Metroid. Look at your usual Metroid game on the SNES or GCN. Now look at Hunters. It's a fresh take on the series with an all-out FPS twist. Example: Kirby. Look at your usual Kirby game. It's usually a platformer, adventure or racing title. But with the DS version we get a unique twist on the platformer by drawing rainbows to advance. And the execution has been superb. (Look at the high review scores from IGN to GameSpot)
too true. i dont' like the fact that all games now a days are GTA 5 or Zelda 7 etc... new games with new concepts should be made.
Then why support a system where new concepts are not and probably never will be part of the programme. SOCOM, GTA, Gran Turismo, etc. How many ports does it take people to realise that the PSP is primarily focused on bringing the console experience to the handheld, with a lack of focus on new concepts. You really are contradicting yourself here.
oh and i traded in my gba sp and like 10 gbp games and got 202 dollars in store credit at Gamers here in Lincoln so i only had to pay 48 bucks, not a bad deal huh?
I could never trade in my favourite GBA games, but whatever floats your boat.
lets face it the quality of the PSP overwhelms the DS. sure there are not that many games out right now but it takes time.
The quality of the PSP has in no way or form overwhelmed the DS. In sales the DS is first worldwide. In production Nintendo is shipping 8 million more units of the DS than than Sony's PSP. In games, Nintendo's offering hugely overwhelmed the PSP's lineup at E3. Of course these are all subjective issues, but these facts disprove the theory that the PSP has overwrought the DS in any way or form, at the moment.
Enjoy your wait, while I'm playing through Chrono Trigger and Mario Kart online on my DS this Christmas. ;)

well is wanting the console experience to the handheld a bad thing? shouldn't that be the next step in handheld gaming? we are at the stage where technology should push the handheld to the next level. and don't tell me nintendo has more focus then sony i mean just look at the DS to PSP, DS you can play games and touch the bottom screen. PSP, you can play games on the beautiful screen, listen to mp3's and watch UMD videos, for me the one with more value and direction is the psp. but hey you can like whatever you like and the same for me.
oh and nintendogs..... go back 7-8 years ago and look up dogs 1-3 or cats 1-3

everyone keeps saying the psp is better because of its multimedia copabilities, but what about the games? I own a psp and a ds (and i just got my wipeout pure gamma pack 2, for those of you that havent downloaded it yet) and i never owned a ps2, so for me its a new experience for a few games, but i did notice that most games for the psp are ports from the ps2. As for the ds, its a new take on games, but sure games like the new super mario bros, are just 3d versions of their 2d counterparts, they are trying to add a new aspect to the game.
You also said 'shouldn't that be the next step in handheld gaming?' So why should the fact that it plays movies and mp3s be a factor?
Oh yea, btw, how many of you guys actually buy UMD Movies?
And, remember before when everyone was bashing the ds by saying 'the psp has gta, while the ds has nintendogs.' Then all of a sudden nintendogs gets a 40/40 in famitsu, and it triples ds sales. How ironic...

if you read my post again, i was reffering to the Console experience coming to handheld. and well yes that does apply because look at the next gen and current consoles, they are not just game machines xbox and ps2 play dvd's, and cd's, the xbox has a hard drive you can save mp3's on so yeah, it is the next step.
im not saying the DS is a piece of garbage, im saying for me the psp has more "value" and more of an X factor then the ds. i can do so much with my psp just today i was coming home from work, and i bought one of those tapes with a cord on it that connects you your portable cd players so you can listen through your car speakers, well i hooked it up to my PSP and was jammin to Meat Loaf  and well sure there are ports like gta, or ape escape, metal gear, but Mario 64 ds is a direct port of well mario 64 is it not, with the fact you can control him with the stylus or you can be yoshi, how is that a new concept?

ok, i get your point with the cosole coming to a handheld, but what i meant by a new concept is by how they tried to add new controls and a different way to play games. Sure, not everything works, but its a risk in this growing market. So yeah, I guess in a way both of these companies are moving forward, with the psp movie in the 'multimedia + console coming to handheld' while nintendo, because they have been in handhelds for a while, try and break the traditonal d-pad + A/B buttons only and make something that will work with new gamers, as well as those core gamers.
I guess the psp could have more value in a sense because of the fact you dont have to carry multiple gadgets with you, and its like 'a jack of all trades, master of none'(it wont dethrone the iPod, or most mp3 players, and until the movies come down, or unless they make a home UMD player, then it won't pose a threat, for now) but then you have to also consider the extra cash you throw to buy a memory stick. But yeah, i have used it just to go around before and yeah, its functional enough, i usually use it as speakers when im just chillin at a friends house or something though
In the end, it just depends on if u really need the multifunctions I guess, because sometimes I bring my ds and my mp3 player with me when I go out and my mp3 player is relatively small, but I guess sometimes having to bring 2 things is a hassle. When I brought my psp with me I just watched music videos on my way to where I was going, which was easier than carrying two things.

Ports, what can you do? We will eventually run out of ideas for games :hehe: Imagine a game like Pokemon Quartz or something, and a GTA: Running Outta City Stories..
Yeah, thats one UMD movie I was thinking of buying. Advent Children because I want to actually own it, and the rest I just need to get a memory stick thats has enough space.

well is wanting the console experience to the handheld a bad thing?
No, wanting a console experience on your handheld isn't a bad thing. But you said ...
new games with new concepts should be made.
That's difficult to create when you're just porting console experiences to the handheld. All I'm saying is that you are contradicting yourself heavily here.
shouldn't that be the next step in handheld gaming? we are at the stage where technology should push the handheld to the next level.
Unfortunately, it seems like the majority of people still prefer the 'gaming ghetto' of Nintendo's 'underpowered' handhelds. I really think people don't understand the big difference between a handheld gaming device and a home gaming device. Handheld gaming is at it's best when you have a game that's easy to pick-up and play, yet with deeper levels of gameplay. If you just want home console games, why not just go play them on your home consoles? People will be voting with their money this holiday season in which direction they're going.
and don't tell me nintendo has more focus then sony i mean just look at the DS to PSP, DS you can play games and touch the bottom screen. PSP, you can play games on the beautiful screen, listen to mp3's and watch UMD videos, for me the one with more value and direction is the psp.

All of that is highly subjective. In fact your 'logic' here could do with a bit more reasoning. Anecdotes and throwing around terms like 'value' and 'X factor' don't cut it. Otherwise it's just your opinion, and you should state it as such.
oh and nintendogs..... go back 7-8 years ago and look up dogs 1-3 or cats 1-3
Please read this (http://lostgarden.com/2005/06/nintendogs-case-of-non-game-that.html) review of the workings and concepts in the game.
both handhelds will have ports like it or not
It's pretty obvious to see which handheld has more ports and more games with a lack of new concepts, as well as a lack of handheld assimilated games. Don't make me pull a list here.
but Mario 64 ds is a direct port of well mario 64 is it not, with the fact you can control him with the stylus or you can be yoshi, how is that a new concept?
Umm, yes it is. Controlling a character with a touch screen through the input of a stylus or thumpad has never been done before in the history of handheld gaming devices. That's a new concept. Was it applied well? Was the game the best one for it? Maybe not. But it was still a new concept and if you look at the many other games with fresh concepts and fresh IPs, you can see it executed much better. (ie Kirby, Meteos, Trace Memory, Lost in Blue and plenty more)
In the end, it just depends on if u really need the multifunctions I guess, because sometimes I bring my ds and my mp3 player with me when I go out and my mp3 player is relatively small, but I guess sometimes having to bring 2 things is a hassle. When I brought my psp with me I just watched music videos on my way to where I was going, which was easier than carrying two things.
Agreed. The problem for me is that the PSP is expensive to provide media for, is hard to just take with you because of it's fragility and it has very, very few games that I actually want for it. As said before, the only reason I still have the PSP is because of Lumines.
but hey you can like whatever you like and the same for me.
No problem with that here. But just stop stating unfounded conclusions as fact, thanks.

Actually, I believe that Frodo was talking about how our consoles now have multimedia capabilities and that the console experience to a handheld is that now you can listen to music, manage multiple game saves, play games, and use it to watch movies just like how the xbox and ps2 are capable of this(i wish i could say gamecube too, but until, possibly, the revolution, I doubt we have multimedia functions. Actually there is also this upgrade to the play-yan which allows you to play mp4 movies in stereo sound. http://ds.ign.com/articles/629/629224p1.html)
Haha, If you've noticed I've got from commenting Frodo's quotes to backing his quotes..

Well after a lot of thinking over the past week, I went and bought myself a blue DS with Kirby Canvas Curse, WarioWare: Touched, and Supermario 64 DS. I got Mario for free with a bundle. Kirby is actually really fun, it has been said by many that Kirby has done the best of any the DS games to use the touch screen peripheral. Wario Ware is fun also, just a quick question. How do you get toys for your toy room in WarioWare?

no... if you did it right... then it makes it for you... what you do now is find the emulator you want (I'd go with NES or SNES as they are the easiest and most functional to run) and use the Kxploit program to put it on your PSP... you take the .PBP file from the emulator once you download it and place it in the Kxploit, name the file to what you want it to be name and point Kxploit towards your PSP... once it puts the emulator on your PSP you place the roms you want into the NON % file... and wallah you can have literally hundreds of games on your PSP... I have over 100 now....

Imagination_13

There's a japanese 2.0 update that you're not supposed to install on American PSPs, which is here (http://www.pspupdates.com/2005/07/psp-system-software-version-20-update.html). As you can see there's a warning on the page. I haven't experience any problems, but if you want to be safe wait until the US release.

okay quick question... where do you have to be to get online with the PSP? next to a puter or "hotspot"? if so then it sucks because everytime I tried to test my connection it always says (in so many words) it can't...
Imagination_13
08-14-2005, 09:00 PM
Yeah, you have to be in a hotspot, which is pretty pointless since you most likely will have a computer in the area to use instead; it's still nifty though. I have a wireless router so it's not really an issue for me.

Pretty much, but the touch screen and mic make it really deep. Your dog responds to petting, and you can throw a ball/frisbee, and he will learn his name and up to 14 tricks that you tech him through voice commands. It's like a tamagotchy on crack.
Hmm fascinating. Still I dunno. Mind you I did pick up Pokemon for the hell of it one day and got hooked on the gameplay. This just might happen with this you never know.

Dude, it is THE strategy game. It's the first strategy game that I have played that requires complete and utter strategy to win. It's turn-based just so you know, but that's what really makes it great. You can have less guys who are weaker, but if you have the right strategy of when to attack and where then you can secure the victory. Oh, and the touch screen is great for the precise control, and the dual screens are cool because they have some battle that have two fronts that you can have an AI partner control or switch between whenever you want. This gets me wanting a Starcraft port onto the DS, it actually could work GREAT if they do it right.

Burnout Legends on the DS looks like trash compared to the PSP version. I don't understand why they keep trying to make the same game on this system that already exist for another system. Aren't they trying to come up with a DIFFERENT way to play games? I hope they don't do the same thing with the Revolution.

Even I think the DS legends will probably suck lol. EA just doesn't understand that the DS is not meant for random game ports. DS games need to be built from the ground up knowing the functionality of the system.

you think because of burnout out for psp?

09-22-2005, 08:00 PM
I'll vote for the DS.
I was very interested in the PSP at first, mainly because of the ability to play movies and because of the inclusion of an analog stick. I got really dissapointed when I found out that it wouldn't play DVDs; I wouldn't buy any movies right now on any other format than DVD, especially considering how large my collection is. Also, after playing Metroid Prime Hunters on the DS, I saw that the touch screen was better than an analog stick, almost as good as a mouse and keyboard. So naturally, I lost interest in the PSP.
The main reason I'm getting the DS is to play GBA games. The GBA was my favorite system this generation, but I only bought the original Gameboy Advance which I have since the first week it came out; I never bought a GBA-SP. So playing GBA games on a backlit screen is a huge reason for me.
The DS's planned games interest me alot more than the PSP's. The DS is also most likely the last system we will see 2D games on. So I'm definitely not going to miss out on this one.
The moment I decided to get a DS instead of a PSP was when I found out that the PSP was only going to be available as "Value Pack", which made the price go up by $65 . None of the stuff included would of use to me except the Memory Card, which barely had any space. I would never pay more than $200 for handheld and I would've much rather spent those extra $65 to buy a bigger Memory Card. That's when I noticed the DS was more for me.
I will buy a DS after all these things happen:
1. When New Super Mario Bros comes out
2. When the Granite version of the DS comes out in the US
3. After another price drop
(though if by that time a some kind of redesigned DS is anounced, I will wait for that)

(though if by that time a some kind of redesigned DS is anounced, I will wait for that)
sounds logical. i too like the ds more than the psp, but i wouldnt just dismiss the psp so easily it has alot to offer including the emulators that allow you to play many of the older games. i own both systems and am happy with them both im sure you would be to.

I own both and I'll say that they're like this...
If you're looking for a multimedia/internet browser go with the PSP. The games aren't that great right now but it's capabilities are endless. If you're strictly for games, then the DS is your best bet because you have what is the best handheld game available in Advance Wars: Dual Strike.

Yeah, I notice that too. Some people are speculating, and I agree with them, that people are buying movies and whatnot because they need to legitimize their $250 purchase that is now functioning as a pretty paperweight. I like my PSP, but it is hurting for some games.

Still probably functions as a better portable video player than the PSP. MP4 my a$$, and those dumb memory cards are totally overpirced, especially compared to any other memory format. Also, that thing has 30gb for a total of $50, the PSP alone is $250, then to get a gig you need to spend an additional $100 at least. Oh, well now that I think about it were you referring to the PSP when you said that?

nothing at all. its when you fail to deliver any experience at all besides lumines that you begin to get disappointed.
But seriously, it's a good system. It's just in dire need of games. GTA should give it a quick boost...but it needs to keep coming with them. Burnout may be cool, but when its available on my PS2 as well, its just not worth it. I'd rather get that console experience on my console.

Oh, I have my PSP, I got it at launch, but I never got the experience that I paid for. I require my $250 gaming machines to have at least 3 good games within the first 6 months.
And Cheekdilly is right, why play NFL Street, NBA, MLB, Burnout, Twisted Metal, or any of the other ports when there are better experiences on your console. Also, it would be different if these were true portable games, i.e. pick up and play for five minutes while you wait for the bus, but they are full on console games with minute long load times (NFL Street, I timed it) and everything.

Not true to most games. I know on Burnout legends the Loadtimes are less than a minute (Depending on what youre doing) and the menu system is based on quick play. I cant say the same for NBA Street because of the initial long load at the beginning and Darkstalkers well...Darkstalkers has sucky load times. The point is theyre are plenty of Quickplay options on most psp games.

I know that and that is fine, but Drizzt asked me if I got what I paid for, so I answered. Like I said I own both and like both, but the people who say that PSP is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better and no one can disagree with them, have some serious problems imo.
EDIT: the 1 minute times were for NFL Street; you are right that most have quick play options, but it is still not fast enough because the games are not built for that type of play. They are console games, and are meant for long durations of play. They need to stop making console games and formatting them into portable format and start making portable games with some console parts, like better graphics and sound etc.

In a recent interview with EGM Magazine, Eiji Aunoma, the guy who took over the responsibility of directing Zelda games after the legendary Ocarina of Time, stated that:
"What I can tell you is that it's going to use the touch screen for a very unique control system that people have never experienced in a Zelda game before. I think one of the important elements of the Zelda series has always been that you feel like you're in the world doing the things that Link is doing and touching the things that Link is touching. This time you'll be able to use the touch screen and actually touch those items and objects yourself."

I know at the end of the last article they say they only have to sell half as many to make as much money, but they aren't factoring in the price to manufacture. If PSP costs $200 to make and get to stores, and DS costs $100, then each unit sold makes the exact same amount of profit. Now, I don't know the numbers on cost but it seems like they would be an equal ratio to the price.

FREE?! You mean download the movies? Well, you can only download stuff illegally for free, just like you can for the ipod. Then you have to pay $20-30 for a UMD with a movie or a few episodes of a show on it, whereas the itunes service allows you to legally download episodes of tv shows or other videos for only $2 a video. Also, the itunes videos are already in the proper format and just have to be placed on the harddrive, unlike the horrible system available for putting movies on the psp.

It has a smaller screen, but not too small. Especially since it is a portable device the screen size isn't a big issue at all. And considering you can fit over 30 times the stuff on there for the same price with better conveiniance and support from Apple I think ipod has a pretty big advantage.

Handheld sales trends in Japan
DS outselling PSPs in Japan, game lineup cited as reason; Game Boy Micro mania simmering down, too pricey for quality.
It's no secret that portable gaming machines are wildly popular in Japan. In the last year, three high-profile handhelds have stormed the country, the latest being Nintendo's Game Boy Micro. Now, with all three on the market, various sales charts in Japan are showing some interesting trends.
Recent sales figures provided by Dengeki Online revealed that cumulative shipments of the DS have nearly doubled those of the PSP in Japan since both launched in the country last December. As of the end of September 2005, Nintendo sold 3.2 million units of its DS handheld in Japan, while Sony Computer Entertainment shipped only 1.7 million units.
The latest issue of Famitsu showed that the lineup of games seems to be the main factor for the PSP's sluggish sales. While four DS games ranked in the top 10 sales chart for the first half of fiscal year 2006, the best-selling game for the PSP, Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 9 Ubiquitous Evolution, trailed behind in 35th place.
A private survey conducted by the magazine further showed that only 15.3 percent of PSP owners are happy about its game lineup, and 46.2 percent see it as the biggest issue regarding the PSP. On the other hand, 46.1 percent of DS owners are satisfied with the lineup for their handheld, and the number of owners complaining about the lack of games remained low at 24.2 percent.
According to the survey, the biggest issue for DS owners is the machine's design, with 31.3 percent of Japanese gamers complaining about its size and weight, especially since the handheld is often played with one hand holding the stylus. On the other hand, PSP owners see their handheld's design as the second best-selling point, following its various hardware functions. However, hardware functions are also the selling point for the DS, with 61.8 percent of owners saying they like its touch-screen controls.
While the Game Boy Micro has been a successful hit in Japan since its debut in September, its sales seem to be gradually settling down. Famitsu reports that the handheld has shipped 200,000 units in its first three weeks of release. But the week of September 26 saw a decline of 45 percent, as the handheld's sales dropped from the 52,048 units sold the week before down to 28,721 units.
A private survey published in the magazine showed some mixed figures for the Game Boy Micro, as 46.9 percent of surveyed gamers said they had no interest or plans in picking up the handheld at the current time. The unit's price seems to be the biggest sales roadblock for the miniaturized Game Boy Advance, with 83.9 percent of gamers saying its quality doesn't justify its price. The Micro sells in Japan for 12,000 yen ($105), which is only 3,000 yen ($26) less than the DS.
24.7 percent of gamers said they would consider purchasing the Micro when its price drops, while 22 percent said they're currently interested in picking up the handheld. The top incentive for buying the Game Boy Micro is its chic style. With multiple answers allowed, gamers planning to pick up the handheld voted its design as the top reason for purchase, at 80 percent, followed by its size (54.3 percent) and faceplates (36 percent).

November 4th is the new European release date for Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, it has been confirmed today.
Rockstar's hugely-anticipated PSP-exclusive had been due for release this Friday, the 28th October, but has now been forced back seven days for reasons as-yet unconfirmed.
The game's UK distributor Gem confirmed the news to Eurogamer today, and admitted it had only just received confirmation itself this lunchtime.
It is not yet known whether the European slip will have any effect on the game's US release date, which at the time of writing is expected to be tomorrow, the 25th October.
Should the game remain on track in the US for this week, it's fair to say that import retailers will be enjoying a bumper weekend selling what is one of the most in-demand games of the entire year on any platform.

Graphical Blurring is over used
Hard.
You cant save anywhere(I know its not usually there but on a handheld its pretty neccesary)
Good:
Great story
Great music and sound
Graphics although cheap at times are still nice
Feels like a living breathing city in your hands
Best of all...Lazlo gets his own station again! And its hilarious as ever.
Feels like GTA3 in your hands
You can access multiplayer (which i havent tried yet) from the pause menu

It has a smaller screen, but not too small. Especially since it is a portable device the screen size isn't a big issue at all. And considering you can fit over 30 times the stuff on there for the same price with better conveiniance and support from Apple I think ipod has a pretty big advantage.
Support from Apple? I have the first iPod with the click wheel and the battery only lasts 2 hours. It is still in its warranty period but when mum went to Apple to get warranty they refused. So there is ZERO support from Apple.
iPods have all the features but aren't good quality.

Getting a little away from the topic, but I'm curious as to why they refused to help you out? The battery should be covered under the 1yr warranty.
Getting back to the topic, I think that both Sony AND Apple have support issues. There was always something wrong with my Sony brand machines (which is why I don't buy too many Sony products other than Playstations and storage media) and they hardly help when you contact them. Apple on the other hand usually has a decent product, free from defects. But when a problem does arrive, they can't help for nothing. So I guess both the PSP and Ipod lose in the customer support arena.

By support in this sense I am meaning that Apple provides youw with programs for conversion and Itunes for downloading ready-made videos while Sony gives you no conversion tools and basically makes it as hard as they can to get videos to work on the PSP.
EDIT: btw, it's not huge news but it is pretty cool, DS will recognize handwriting (http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3145082)

That's the beauty of the sleep function. :sleepy:
Anyways, from personal experience Sony has given me the best support when something was wrong with one of their products I bought.

Again, not talking about that kind of support. I'm saying that Sony made it difficult to put videos on there while Apple is going as far as actually giving you a program with videos to download as well as making it easy to put videos on there that you already have.

I was actually replying to Cheek, but I dunno. I think I'll take quality over convenience. But that's just me and I don't find it too frustrating or out of my way to just simply convert videos (the free program you can download with a quick google search isn't very complicated to use) I'd like to put on my PSP.

I think I'll take quality over convenience.
Considering the iPod has a bigger harddrive and better sound quality deciding which is of a better quality is tougher than you think.
PSP
Pros: Bigger screen, plays games
Cons: Poor conversion support, no downloadable videos, lesser sound quality when compared, large size makes portability dificult
iPod
Pros: Better sound quality especially with mp3's, iTunes service for easy video access as well as easy to use and high quality conversion software, much bigger harddrive for equal price, much smaller size
Cons: Smaller screen, no speakers, while it plays games they are not of same quality in any respect
So it really boils down to what is important to you in terms of which is better, but either way this is just another problem for the PSP to face, with the DS gaining steam in the game department and this new developement taking away its multimedia monopoly Sony has some rough times ahead if they want to maintain PSP success.

Nice find dude. The pics I've seen so far were pretty far away, so I didn't see how well they pulled the graphics off. I can't wait to get my hands on it. I'm a big old school FF fan.

Sony take one step forward (http://1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3145251)
And two steps back (http://scifi.com/scifiwire2005/index.php?category=0&id=33119&type=0)
It seems like it may be too little too late, consumers seem to have jumped ship to the video service on the iPod already.

I have a DS, but i would also like a PSP for its multifunction.
Though if i had to pick one, DS. You can get a cheap MP3 Player, a DS, and a MEdia Player for under the 400 dollar price tag for the PSP bundle. (If yuo know where to look)
DS is very original, and made by a company that's been around and beaten one of the mightiest (Sega). Nintendo doesnt lie, they know they arnt competeing against sony, but they arnt predicting to do so, which keeps them in business.
Anyway, reasons why i like DS:
Advanced Wars DS
Metriod Prime Hunters

...I don't understand how something Apple does means Sony takes two steps back, but whatever.

Because the Apple video system is a huge success, further taking away from the PSP video market. The iPod was already a better mp3 player, but now it is cutting into the video playback so Sony is left with just games, and frankly the DS is beating it there too, trust me I own both and I haven't touched my PSP in about a month (and yes, I know GTA is out, I'm just not too interesten in it right now).

Oh. Well most people who buy a PSP in the first place aren't looking for a video player I hope. I know I wasn't, even though I do make use of it; from the mp4 playback to the UMD movies. Anyway, I've bought pretty much every game available for the PSP and GTA is a must, especially if you like the franchise. I'm only really interested in Nintendogs and Advanced Wars Dual Strike for the Nintendo DS, compared to Coded Arms, Burnout Legends, Medievil, Lumines, GTA: LCS, Battlefront II, and Death Jr. on my PSP. Plus I use it as my .mp3 player and I keep a few pictures on it with me that otherwise would probably be in my wallet or something.

Well, many studies are showing that you are in the minority. DS owners are quite satisfied with the game selection while PSP owners are not, in fact the previous success of its video playback was theorised as a direct result of the dissatisfaction with the gaming side. So, considering the gaming feature is useless, in many people's opinions, and the iPod is a better mp3 player as well as a picture storage device and video player the PSP is losing many of the features that otherwise would have sustained it in this gaming drought.
but can you watch TV on your ipod? not download episodes, but actually watch TV?
No, can you on PSP? I seriously never heard of this except for maybe mentioning in a future tense.
