Goddamnit, pretty soon we'll be sheltering our kids so much that they'll have to wear helmets all day long.

No. Red pen is not psychologically damaging to children. Neither is being "it". Neither is being beaned in the face with a dodgeball. Grow up, sissies.

Well, according to the logic of whoever made this decision, they want the kids to be gay. ;)

heh, yeah I heard that on Rush.. man, the people are such idiots! boy am I glad I'm homeschooled! ..plus, if you REALLY want to be technically accurate, to prevent more 'phsycological damage' and stuff like that, stick to red because theres are some people that actually have a phobia of the color purple!!!
"I hate red," she said. "But because I hate it, I want to work harder to make sure there isn't any red on my papers."agreed.

yeah but if you're beaned in the face to much it could be physically damaging.

You know, if they want to do something about reducing stress in school, instead of changing red pens to purple pens, maybe they could do something about the pricks that beat up the outsiders kids causing them to go on killing rampages or commit suicide.
that would make too much sense i suppose. my school has a problem with suicides.
4 or 5 freshmen took their lives last year.

that was the biggest load of bollocks I've ever read. You have my pity (These comments both refer to the 'red pen' article)

They are talking about this on the radio where I am right now. They are making it sound like a new fashion style.
"Purple is the new Red this season" was an exact quite from them.

"If you see a whole paper of red, it looks pretty frightening," said Sharon Carlson, a health and physical education teacher at John F. Kennedy Middle School in Northampton. "Purple stands out, but it doesn't look as scary as red."
Sheesh, I would expect someone from Northampton to say something like that. It's supposed to look frightening! They've made a mistake, they should correct it. Should the teachers give out hugs instead and tell the kids they're wonderful anyway just so they don't hurt their feelings? Red pen never did me any harm - we're just going to be teaching kids to be afraid of another color now.

Er..how many of us have made it through school with no emotional scars because of red ink? It sounds like a marketing ploy to me. "Buy purple pens so that you won't scar these children for life!!"

I heard this on the radio also, and they were saying that they are also talking about instead of spanking/swatting a child to discipline them, they would put hot sauce on their tounges for punishment. That sounds more psychologically damaging to me than spanking. But we can't have red ink to correct things anymore. Hmmm, makes me think if I even want to have kids in the messed up school system!

This is crap. When I was in school, I used red ink all the time.
All my art projects were bloody and my computer animation projects were nothing but blood and decapitations.
I turned out fine :)

Well Red Pens never scared me, but I do have some emotional scars from school. It was from those smilie faces teachers would put on papers. My smilie faces always seemed to be smaller or not as happy as the other kids and that always hurt my feelings. ;)
red is sexual, wonder when will they come up with that excuse for teen pregnancy
we used to have red or green when correcting papers

hehe, I don't think I have the patience for that ;) I think I'll just send em to a private school (which are really not that much better as I speak from experience)

 okay - obviously, the parents that suggested this (my guess is they drive around town 20 miles under the speed limit with that stupid soccer ball magnet on the side of their Lincoln Navigator that they're too short to drive that has that baby on board sign in the back window) have completely missed the point that the "aversion" to red has everything to do with the fact that we've conditioned ourselves to associate red with mistakes. It wouldn't matter WHAT color we changed it to - eventually to satisfy these morons we'd have to change it again. Not to mention the fact that purple is a ridiculous idea - most classrooms require children to write in blue or black ink or pencil. In the case of blue or black ink - purple doesn't contrast enough.
Maybe we should just give everyone A's too - I mean it hurts their feelings to get a D. Please - get a life and try working with your kid to improve their reading, writing and math skills instead of blaming their inadequacies and yours as a parent on the color red.

Just to add some fuel to your fire, there are many colleges that do this exact thing. Just look up 'grade inflation' and Harvard or Stanford, for example. Granted it is hard to track, but more colleges are afraid to grade low due to the $$$ that the schools make. The schools are under pressure to increase scoring to please their customer base.
I forgot the exact numbers, but at Harvard it was something like this: in the late 80s, around 25% of undergrad grades were A's. In the early 2000s, around 50% of undergrad grades were A's. (OK, I had to look it up, here is one quick article on this: USA Today Grade Inflation Article (http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/2002/02/08/edtwof2.htm) )

Yeah, I've heard talk about grade inflation too. I'm not entirely sold that it happens to the degree some people suggest. Nearly every reputable university has raised entrance standards over the past several years - making it harder to get in and increasing the overall "smartness" of the student body. I for one, couldn't get into UF now with my grades and scores THEN if I wanted to. Yes, instructors may be a little more "forgiving" but by and large I think it's more a reflection of the entrance requirements and the undergrad requirements.

This is a stupid idea.
If you have a paper full of red it's your fault because your a dumbass and you should feel scared.
This article pissed me off.

Not mine, but funny nonetheless:
I propose a new grading system to help protect students' self-esteem:
90-100 A++
80-89 A+
70-79 A
60-69 A-
<60 A--

i say we invoke capital punishment on underachievers. if a kid fails, he dies. **** the red and purple pen ****.
instead, if they get their test back and it has a failing grade it simple states, in black pen, "any last requests or last meals you would care for?" and then before the kid gets to actually answer they get popped in the skull.
but yeah, the day parents start *****ing about pen colors is the day that i start to seriously consider buying a private island so i can get away from all you loony ****ers.

Red is a tight color, I think it's stupid they're doing this. Red won't harm children, if anythang it's the teachers that harm children, not Red. I picture these morons as the type of ppl that change the channel as soon as someone says "Damn" or "Hell".

These are the type of ppl that think Red can harm children.
1. The ones who perform children song with that gay looking banjo guitar, while nude in front of nude children while preaching about the enviroment, and how meat can cause health problems later in life and other health crap.
2. wear a bowtie and feel sorry for the loner of a group
3. ride a bicycle with a girly basket and a horn and feels like cars and trucks are a danger to the enviroment, (prolly on his way to perform children songs)
4. Eat vegetables and nothing else
5. Are the same ppl that want to ban video games.
6. Are the same ppl that want to ban movies.
7. Are prolly mothers who tell their preteen daughters that all men are sexual predators that want nothing but sex, while at the same time send their preteen daughters to their freinds house so the mother can invite those gay looking firefighters or UPS queers over.
8. Are the same type of ppl that thinks that when you see a child you should give them a hug to feel wanted.
9. Prolly drive slow while listening to "It's a lovely world, we live in a beautiful neighborhood, everyone in the world smiles and are our friends"
10. and last of all, are prolly hating on Red bc they thinks it will harm children and that children can be harmed. Give me a ****ing break, I've seen children wearing red, and liking red. Children love red just as any other color.
