Hmm............let me think.
Well I don't know. I think every movie has the right to have a large fan base. If I had to say one I'd say Pirates of the Carribean, but that's only because it seems like the public audience thinks it's one of the best things ever. Don't get me wrong I have it on DVD and like it. It's just that the public doesn't give other films that deserve to be in the spotlight time.
Don't kill me.

Troy?! Most of the time I read about the flick it gets a beating. Heck it didn't even do too well.
Anyway, I can't say Titanic's really overrated. Probably in 1997/98 but now, it's perhaps one of the most hated films in history.
The original Shrek is overrated as hell. I only got two laughs out of its dated pop culture references and bathroom humor.

I'd say Shrek 2 is way overrated. The beginning & middle were average if that. The ending made it shine.
Titanic is overrated, but does anyone really love that movie now? No. It was overrated when it came out but If it came out today I wouldn't of made 600 million.

I totally agree.
For me, I also find overrated.....
Anything Matrix related
LOTR Return of the King (well, slightly overrated. Not the first two, those were excellent)
Scarface
Boondock Saints (what the hell, how is this so good? Did I miss something?)
American Beauty
and
DODGEBALL, most overrated movie this year.
droidguy1119
07-10-2004, 02:13 AM
I disagree wtih those who said Matrix and RotK.
Highfire, you are crazy for calling American Beauty overrated, I thought it was great. Scarface was somewhat overrated, but it was still great.
Shrek 2 is overrated. Not as good as the original.
Kable24
07-10-2004, 02:43 AM
I think it's funny no one disagrees about Titanic.
For me...
All three LOTR's (although they are kinda growing on me)
Scarface (seen it twice and still can't get into it)
Faithless Eye
07-10-2004, 02:59 AM
Titanic's gotta be up there.
Van Helsing (hey, one of my friends calls it her favourite movie EVER, and says that the only reason nobody else likes it is because they're too dumb to get the irony and sarcasm in it!)
Pirates of the Caribbean - because everybody seems to think it's Depp's best performance...mainly because it's probably one of the 2 performances they've seen (along with Scissorhands). i think his best was Ed Wood...hell, even Sands in Once Upon A Time In Mexico was more fun than that in Pirates. Come to think of it, I like most of his screen appearences more than the one in Pirates.
A Knight's Tale - WHY does everybody LOVE this movie?!?!
Anything like Fast and the Furious....people I know think this is, like, the best movie ever. I just don't get that.
Chicago - come on, The Pianist should've won best picture. Chicago was fun, but not Best Pic material.
Moulin Rouge...ok, it had good design, cinematography and editing, but it was fairly boring for about half of it and the music SUCKED (save for a couple wee bits). Ewan McGregor can't sing.
Episode one: The phantom menace. Thank god episode two was better...but only a little
Troy was overrated also
I preferred Episode 1 over Episode 2... quite a bit actually.
And I'm here to stand up for Lost in Translation and American Beauty... easily two of the best films of the past five years. I don't remember much about Titanic, so I can't really comment.
The Two Towers and The Return of the King were slightly overrated. Fellowship was fantastic, though. And, though I like Fight Club, I don't think it's quite as great as so many fans make it out to be. Not to say it's a bad movie, but many of its cult fans seem to think it's just the greatest movie ever. Oh, and The Birds is definitely one of Hitchcock's worst. I don't know why so many people think it's so great.
droidguy1119
07-10-2004, 06:26 AM
Well, with Fight Club, I think there's a ton of people who watched it and didn't get it but think it's cool because it's cool to like Fight Club. Which is annoying.
I don't think a lot of people liked Episode I. I know I agree with you, Oj, it's way better than Episode II.

this movie is not actually overrated. it did well, but not that well. and the reason it did so well is because of the first one. the movie was burned in every paper and got realy bad reviews so i wouldn't say its overrated.
Troy isn't overrated either imo. made only 140mio in the US!!! that is pretty bad actually. but it made a lot more overseas, about 300mio. reviews were average. to me still the best movie of the year.
overrated movie IMO:
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
highly overrated. overhyped. total gross more than 1bil, correct me if i'm wrong. this movie was a let down imo and i won't get into this anymore. i still don't get it how ROTK won 11 oscars.

Honestly there is no such thing as an overrated and underrated movie. Its all about opinion, but if we're going to get into this discussion based on opinion then I think Citizen Kane is overrated. Is it really the greatest movie of all-time? I don't think so. This year, so far, I think Spider-Man 2 is overrated. Yes, it is a great movie in my opinion, but it wasn't that good. There was problems with that movie and things I would have changed. I still can't believe its the most critically acclaimed movie of the year.
sphericthor
07-10-2004, 08:22 AM
Yes it's about opinions so we're giving them
I just don't know where to start.......
The one reason movies are over rated is because the media hype them up so damn much because they're paid, but when we the public listen to the hype and expect this great movie it ends up being just another average movie. Some examples of this are Matri Reloaded/Revolutions, the LOTR Trilogy and Spider-man.......... these were the so-called great movies over the last few years but they were rather disappointing

That's also what I was saying. There's movies that people think are overrated, but in reality aren't. Its just the media thats making them seem so popular. Thats why I said Citizen Kane is overrated because its a movie many 'people' seem to consider the greatest thing ever made. Then again it all has to do with opinions. I think Spider-Man 2 is a great movie and every critic in the nation believes it to be a masterpiece. Even though they've never read a single Spider-Man comic in their life and don't notice there's problems with the film. Like Doc Ock being such a
p-u-s-*-y! The same can be said about Titanic. Lets face it guys hate the movie, but we all know women love it and thats why it made 600 million dollars. Lets not forget that movie was also a great date movie. Titantic made more money during Valentines Day then it did during its entire run.

How are people saying that movies like the Matrix sequels and Troy are overrated? That's not possible. These movies got lame reviews, and not alot of people went to watch Revolutions or Troy. Most people talk about how much they hate these three movies, so how can they possibly be overrated?
As far as T3 goes, almost everyone hates that movie, I love it, but if everyone hates it, how can it be overrated?
And Pirates of the Caribbean IS great. I would never even give it the time of day until a few weeks ago when I saw it on Starz. I now own it on dvd and I can say it's one of my favorite movies. I seriously think it is one of Depp's best performances. Just don't be all pissy cause one of his best works is in a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

To Mat's comment:
I think it deserves its box office success. Its a great movie, but the critical success is insane. Critics seem to think its a masterpiece without never reading a single comic and not realizing the flaws. Also there's people like Ebert that think every comic should be light. "This is what a superhero movie should be." What the hell is that supposed to mean?! Are you trying to say that in the new Batman movie Bruce Wayne should be walking down the streets with Rain Drops Fallin' On my Head in the background?! It works for Spider-Man because there's always been room for humor in that Spidey comics, especially the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko ones. However, it wouldn't work for Batman because it is dark and intense. He gave the Burton films thumps down because it was too dark. I should slap him!

I strongly disagree with Ebert's reviews on the first two Batman movies. He even says once "I always thought it would be fun to be Batman." Fun to be Batman? The man is haunted by more ghosts than Disney's Haunted Mansion. Ebert misses the character by a mile.
My problems with Spider-man are publicly known. I think it's too much melodramatic teen angst hoo-hah. Most everyone else thinks it's some deep character study. That's fine, but it's hugely overrated in the Book o' Mat.

It is fun to be Superman. It is not fun to be Batman unless you are some kind of Travis Bickel and hate society enough to do something crazy like that.

It is a character study. Spider-Man is a normal person with the same problems we have. Right now he is having "teenage" problems because he is still a teenager. Once he gets older and faces issues an older person would encounter the movies will focus on that.

ROTK is overrated, but if you say that it's because it got 11 Oscars then that's alittle silly... It's preety easy to see that it was a homeage to the entire trilogy, not just ROTK. That's not true. More people "OVER THE INTERNET" hated them then people "OVER THE INTERNET" liked them. Sorry if that didn't make sense.
But, more people in the world liked more then they hated them. Look at all the little kids that saw it. I remember when I was younger, every new movie that I saw instantly became my favorite of all time.
