The news celebrities where I live generally consist of goofy sports guys or overly tan weathermen, so yes I can believe San Diego could really love someone like Ron Burgundy. Do rival news crews have battle royales in seedy back alleys? No and that’s what keeps Anchorman from achieving something above a good Saturday Night Live skit. There are some inspired jokes involving wise dogs and their incredible journeys, the battle of the sexes between Ron and his new female co-anchor, and about 70’s life in general, but in the end, Anchorman is only funny in the moments and doesn’t really click as a whole.
Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) is the most popular TV anchorman in San Diego. He makes unfunny comments seem funny to his audience, and heads a goofy news crew including sports with Champ Kind (David Koechner), “our man in the field” Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), and the funniest Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) with weather. When the boss (Fred Willard) is forced to add diversity (not a wooden Civil War ship) to the news crew in the form of Veronica Corningstone, and after a failed relationship with her, Ron feels threatened by her presence in the news room. The plot unfurls to a showdown at the zoo involving giant Kodiak bears, a cameo appearance with no arms, and an surprise hero. Make no mistake, this isn’t sharp satire; it’s pure goofball comedy.
Will Ferrell is very funny here but in the same way his James Lipton or George W. Bush were funny, not in the endearing way his Buddy is funny in Elf. He is great with both verbal and physical humor. I can’t wait to see how he pulls off Franz Liebkind in the remake of The Producers. Christina Applegate is quite funny here as well. She keeps up nicely with Ferrell and the two have surprisingly good chemistry. Fred Willard doesn’t feel our of place in his role, but feels sort of unused. He has a running joke that his son keeps doing terrible things that I didn’t really find too funny.
The news crew is well cast as well. They all feel as campy and male-chauvinistic as they should. The funniest lines come from Steve Carell as the weather guy with an IQ that would classify him mentally retarded. In the end, a joke about him that feels like a cheap shot really is a cheap shot, but it’s dern funny. The cameos are hit-and-miss. The best one is a rowdy biker who incites tragedy in Ron‘s life, and the worse is the lead anchor for the Spanish language channel who joins the battle royale. The guy’s just been in too many movies this year.
I didn’t laugh as often at Anchorman as I did at Dodgeball. Ferrell adds more of a forceful comedic presence to the film, but Dodgeball felt more like a movie than a long skit. Even though it’s not as relentlessly hilarious, it’s got enough charm and funny moments to recommend.

Released July 9th, 2004
Director: Adam McKay
Starring: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Vince Vaughn, Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Steve Carell, Fred Willard, Chris Parnell, Kevin Corrigan, Chuck D, Tara Subkoff, Maya Rudolph, Steven Root
Premise: Will Ferrell stars as Ron Burgundy, the top-rated anchorman in San Diego in the '70s. When feminism marches into the newsroom in the form of ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone (Applegate), Ron is willing to play along at first-as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it's more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor-persons...it's war.
Will Ferrell is boldly going where no Saturday Night Live! performer has gone in years … translated success from the small screen to the big screen! Not since Mike Myers made the move to feature films with Wayne’s World has Hollywood seen such a comedic performer such as Will Ferrell. It isn’t recent that Ferrell has been making appearances in feature films; in fact he made his feature film debut in the Mike Myers comedy, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery in 1997. Since then he has made feature roles and cameos in numerous comedies, none of which have made anything beyond a few million dollars of their production budgets. It wasn’t until 2003 when Ferrell appeared in two surprise smash-hits, Old School and Elf, and decided to leave Saturday Night Live! Since then he has become of the most sought after comedic stars in Hollywood, receiving offers both left and right and there appears to be no sign of him slowing down anytime soon ....

But his euphoric world is rattled by the appearance of a woman, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), who gets selected to be his co-anchor on the Channel 4 News Team. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
A Review by Tyler Foster
for www.funkdiggityfresh.com
It's times like these we need to look up and thank the heavens for Will Ferrell. It's hard to imagine the world of contemporary comedy without the guy, and it's likely movies like Anchorman would never have been made without him. The movie relies so heavily on Burgundy's mannerisms, ridiculous one-liners and hysterical ravings that it's only too easy to see plot holes and empty screen when Ferrell's not doing what he does best. But he's there enough to save the movie, and Anchorman comes out all right.
The paper-thin plot focuses on Burgundy (Ferrell) and his reliable news team, ruling the ratings in San Diego. Whatever Ron Burgundy says, the city listens, and they're leaving other stations in the dust. But the equilibrium is interrupted when a woman, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate), joins the staff, and before Burgundy can fix his hair, she's reading the news right alongside of him.
Unfortunately, there's nothing more to it than that. No real side plots, no other problems enter Ron Burgundy's life during Anchorman, and that's the problem. Whenever Ferrell leaves the room, the movie falters, because there's no other plot to turn to. Christina Applegate gets in a few good one-liners, but the only actor remaning with any comedic meat to chew on is Steve Carell as Brick Tamland, a weatherman with 47 IQ. In the background, Fred Willard squeezes some laughs as the straight man, on the phone with his crazed son, but David Koechner and Paul Rudd are flops as Champ Kind and Brian Fantana.
But despite the story, a flaw so glaring I had to mention it first, I was laughing almost nonstop. For every one line Ferrell fails to make funny (and there are very few), he makes another 15 hilarious. Instead of letting the words do the work, Ferrell breathes some real life into his Ron Burgundy. Burgundy is a time-warp character almost as fleshed-out as Austin Powers; unaware but not stupid, using the pickup lines he trusts, clinging desperately to an era that's slipping away. And even more amazing is that Ferrell makes us believe that Ron Burgundy, however behind-the-times or desperate he may become, really does love his town, and we want Ron Burgundy to be all right.
The movie follows Ferrell as often as possible, and that's obviously a good thing. Some things Ferrell can't quite make work, though, are the things that are getting old in this year's comedies. While a cameo from an angry biker is a moment of twisted glory, a later fight sequence peppered with cameos fails to ignite, because we've seen it before. Also hit-and-miss is the movie's tone, it wavers unsteadily between relatively contained and totally screwball.
Don't get me wrong. Will Ferrell is a genius, and he makes Anchorman play. But if there is a sequel, hopefully the characters are a little more well-rounded, there's some thicker plot at work, and the rest of the cast can keep pace with Ferrell. He does his best to make his part look like more than a Saturday Night Live character, and he succeeds. Luckily for the audience, while the direction, the plot and the other actors aren't there to catch him, Will Ferrell has never needed to be saved. Thank the stars we have the man, because he makes Burgundy comedy without a net.
Score: 8/10

i wanna see this movie so bad! hopefully soon. i still can't picture dodgeball being better than this?! I mean, I just don't get the great reviews for dodgeball. the movie looked decent but I didn't think it was gonna be as funny as people are saying it is.
I laughed a lot more than I thought I was going to in this movie. It was really well put together, despite the few jokes that absolutely flopped. The rest of the cracks more than made up for those. One of the greatest aspects is the film's ability to surprise you. Burgundy's erection and f-bomb and Jack Black punting Baxter all came out of nowhere. And Brick was the best. I couldn't help but laugh every time he opened his mouth. Definitely an incredibly stupid, though somewhat insightful, comedy. But that doesn't make it bad.

I can't remember the last time I laughed so hard during a movie, I was in pain at one point. It helped that it was a full crowd in the theater but it was still hysterical. I think I was at my highest laughing point when he was crying in the phone booth (or the glass case of emotion). And Steve Carrell (Brick) was just great like I thought he would be.

Droid's right about Dodgeball being a more well-rounded movie, better characters yeah, but Anchorman is just...so much funnier...Steve Carell...my god...I think I even peed a little.
The only other really funny bit that hasn't been touched on in this thread is Vince Vaughn's character. Just when he laughed...oh man...and the one outtake that wasn't from the movie....I loved Anchorman. It's not even a movie, but it's really really really funny.

Adam McKay on the DVD release of the film: "We actually did have a four-hour cut of the movie. We are going to put out a DVD with all of it…We made a whole second movie called 'Wake Up, Ron Burgundy.' It's an hour and 40 minutes of entirely fresh material that will be put out on DVD…I think (Dreamworks) is going to do one straight-ahead kind-of release where it's just the movie with some outtakes and then there will be a 2-DVD set with the second movie on it."
After watching Anchorman I hope that happens! (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/featuresnews.php?id=5401)
I first became a fan of Will Ferrell's way back when Jim Carrey hosted SNL. He was in many of the sketches with Jim but who would've forseen what would've happened with Will. Director Adam McKay was also the annoying audience member who asked Jim questions during the mono. Now you know.
And I'm still a fan after watching Anchorman. One of the funniest things I've ever seen. That's just me. The movie had everything. Music, violence, comedy, drama, romance, cameos and a happy ending. A very fine cast too.

Hosts: Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Tim Robbins, Christina Applegate (of course both before 1995...)
Writer: Adam McKay
Voice: Steven Carell (as Gary from TV Funhouse's most popular duo: Ace & Gary)
Tim Robbins was so evil in that film. The cameos and Kodiak bears were spoiled for me but I'm laughing so I don't care.
But I didn't see Jack Black punting Baxter, in a hilarious yet disturbing way, coming..... The one liners will live on with help from the DVD. And stay and watch the credits. A good portion emptied out and missed the outtakes since they didn't appear right away like they usually do. Steve Carell supplied the best outakes. Then since we were way at the back we saw the bit after all the credits. Everyone involved in the movie made a comedy classic. Will mostly likely buy the soundtrack too.
So see it if you haven't.
And Stay Classy!

Movie was alright, probably get it on DVD, but not go to movies to see it again. Some parts just seemed to drag to me, while other parts were pretty funny. Jokes just seemed hit and miss 1/2 of the time to the audience I was in.
I thought the guy playing the weatherman was the best character in the movie and probably did the best job. Seemed like you would laugh after everything he would say.
It was nice seeing the Old School guys back together. But in the end, I'd pick Dodgeball over Anchorman.

I saw the film last night, but I was too tired to write a review then.
MINOR SPOILERS
Will Ferrell could easily become the funniest man to hit the big screen ever. Will Ferrell is at the stage of his career where you can just give me a line and he’ll make it sound funny. Will Ferrell continues to improve every time he takes on the lead role, and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy was no exception.
It’s 1976 and you’re the #1 network news anchor in San Diego. You flip on the TV to a loveable, proud, and dare I say, perfect anchorman? But off camera, he’s a stuck-up, peculiar, jerky man named Ron Burgundy and he’s got personality that’ll have you laughing hours on end.
The station manager, Ed Harkin (Fred Willard) has to be put up with a loudmouth, sexist group of men consisting of sportscaster Champ Kind (David Koechner), a ladies man in Brain Fantana (Paul Rudd), mentally challenged weatherman, Brick Tamland (Steve Carrell) , and of course, the leader of the group, the man himself, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferell). Problems arose when a beautiful woman, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) is brought in for diversity and the gang notices she becomes a nuisance at the news station.
The plot consists of problems in the life of Ron, but it started off with joy as Ron and Veronica went to pleasure town. With fame, however, come problems. Ron angers a biker which makes the biker harm Ron’s “miniature Buddha covered in hair” which results in Burgundy being late for his job. This resulted in Veronica Corningstone filling in for Burgundy which results in a boost in ratings. Ron’s life falls apart as he looses his job only to reunite with his fellow workers in the end. With a movie like this, all that matters is the how many laughs the movie can get from the audience, and if there was a meter counting them it would go through the roof!
The film is quotable gold. I have never heard so many one-liners in a movie, nor seen so many scenes that consisted of just flat-out goofy humor. The film tries to make sure Will Ferrell gets as much as the jokes in, but Steve Carrell was brilliant with his absurd comments throughout the film. He almost stole the movie, but Will Fearrell just had it going. Will Ferrell really catches the anchorman charm of many of the 1970s celebrities before on TV before cable. Some of the scenes were just idiotic that resulted in a cheap laugh. The news station battle royal with every weapon imaginable that took place in an alley had gold written all over it. The cameos, however, were hit-and-miss.
Despite a flawed plot, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy pulls through with it’s hilarious, over-the-top humor. Will Ferrell continues to shine as a comedic star and Christina Applegate wasn’t as funny as she was in her role in Married With Children, but the rest of the cast made-up for her dull jokes.

Yeah. There's a list of proposed alternate actors under Trivia on IMDb and that included a different Harken. I wouldn't have wanted to see someone else. They also suggested Dan Aykroyd as Garth (Harken's assistant), but that one scene in which Garth cries would be enough to make me keep the current actor. That was hysterical.
I would have liked to see John C. Reilly instead of Dave Koechner, who I highly disliked.

Chris Parnell played Garth and under the same suggestions said he was also tapped to play Brick. I don't know if he could've topped Carell's performance but I'm glad to see Parnell got one funny moment in the movie.
Maybe it's me (also title of a Fred Willard sitcom - useless fact) but I think if you're a fan of Will Ferrell from his SNL days and not his movies you'll enjoy the movie more. Everything he did on SNL he did in this movie.

The movie played more like a long SNL skit than an actual movie, and was hit and miss. However, there were more hits than misses, and the hits were hilarious.

The best part with Brick was (not exactly sure how it goes) was:

Ron: Yeah, Brick killed a man
Brick: I killed a guy on a horse
Ron: Yeah, Brick, you might want to go to a safehouse, maybe a cousin's house, lie low a bit... cause you're probably wanted for murder.

Ron: Yeah,Brick killed a man.
Brick: I killed a guy on a horse with a trident.
Ron: Yeah, I've been meaning to talk to you about that, you might want to go to a safehouse, maybe a cousin's house, lie low a bit... cause you're proably wanted for murder.
Ron: Who are you?
Brian: Brian Fantanna
Champ: Champ Kind
Brick: Brian Fantanna
Ron: No Brick, you're not Brian Fantanna
Also, didn't they also leave out Ron getting hit by a fileing cabinet.

Ron Burgundy: Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee.
Brian Fantana: They've done studies, you know. Sixty percent of the time it works every time.
Ron Burgundy: ...That doesn't make any sense, Brian.

Ron: You love the carpet?
Brick: I love..desk
Ron: Brick are you just looking at the first thing you see and saying you love it?
Brick: I love, lamp.

Not better then dodgeball
Dodgeball is just an ingredient in the omlette that Anchorman ****s out, and then steps on, repeatedly, with a big boot.
Then runs it over with an airplane. Twice.

I found Anchorman very hit or miss. It felt like an hour and a half snl skit. More hits than misses though. Ferrell was pretty funny, but I hated that annoying texan that was in love with Ron Burgandy. I didn't like Christina Applegate much either. The parts with the dog baxter were funny. It had it's moments.

I really enjoyed the movie but to call it one of the funniest movies ever is a bit much for me. I thought some of it was a bit hit & miss but I still enjoyed about 80% of it. I thought some of the 'moments' you guys were talking about weren't as funny as you said, but it had great lines in the movie and its a very quotable flick. Best comedy of the summer I would say and its something I could see multiple times but best comedy ever? nope. This movie kicks Old School's ass but isn't quite as good as Elf.

I still liked the whole PleasureTown sequence. lol Look! It's the most glorious rainbow I've ever seen! ...Do me on it!
The Glass Case of Emotion scene was great too, as well as Baxter and Burgandy's relationship. Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee . I missed the first 10 minutes or so, so I hope to see it again.
I just saw the music video. Kinda weird seeing Will Ferrell singing. The beginning is funny though.

I bought the soundtrack today...
If you loved the film, this is a must buy.
Ron introduces each track on the CD - every song, has some special meaning/history (except one, you'll find out) and is just hilarious.
I enjoyed most of the tunes. You learn more about Ron's past
had a homosexual expierence, killed a guy, lost his toe, lived with parents until age 33, born with no spleen, went Marlin fishing with Tom Jones etc.
And just uses some more one liners. And inside the CD Ron has a message about where music ranks, why he did it the CD (money) and thanked various people, characters and things.
"The BLT: you're a light snack, yet you have bacon in you.
Robby Knievel: you never surpassed your Dad but you still did some crazy ass ****.
Brent White: we went from a shoving match to best friends in three days. And though I respect you I'm still certain you threw my tea out when I went to the restroom."
1. A Life, A Song - Ron Burgundy
2. Ride Captain Ride - Blues Image
3. Sunshine (Go Away Today) - Jonathan Edwards
4. Treat Her Like a Lady - Cornelius Brothers/Sister Rose
5. Groovy Situation - Gene Chandler
6. Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
7. Grazing in the Grass - Friends of Distinction
8. Cherry, Cherry - Neil Diamond
9. That Lady - The Isley Brothers
10. Shannon - Henry Gross
11. Use Me - Bill Withers
12. Help Yourself - Tom Jones
13. She's Gone - Hall & Oates
14. Afternoon Delight - Will Ferrell
15. Ron Burgundy's Sign Off

It was okay. That whole scene with Jack Black was the only part of the movie that was really funny to me. Everything else was just average. I thought it would be a can't-miss after reading all these rave reviews but it definitely wasn't worth $8.75.

I'd give this movie a 7 out of 10. Ferrell is funny in the movie. To me Steve Carrel stole the movie. I also liked Paul Rudd's performance. It is pretty much what I expected though. I thought the whole ending was pretty stupid though. Good cameo's and some very quotable lines. "Where did you get a hand grenade?" "Go back to whore island!" "Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee." There is just one more thing about it that bothered me and i know i'm being nitpicky. They both said that they wanted to be network anchors, but they already were weren't they. They should have said national news anchorman/women. and i knew that's what they meant.

Sorry to be the wet blanket of this thread, but I thought the movie sucked. Saw it with a bunch of my buddies the other night and virtually none of us were amused (except for one of my friends, but he laughs when people tie their shoelaces). While the film had a few funny moments, most of it was just painful to sit through. I kept hoping that Wil Ferrell would just bust into his George W Bush impersonation in the middle of a scene so that I'd have SOMETHING to laugh at. Congratulations, I give this film a 4 out of 10.
