With Antony having that thread about whether Titanic would have been affected by piracy, I bring up Mystery Men.

I found Mystery Men to be very funny. I still find it to be very funny. But for some reason when it came out in 1999, it was not a big hit.

I was talking about it with CK the other day, and here's a question. If you've seen Mystery Men, a) did you like it, and b) do you think it would have done better if it had been released this year, in the "year of Ben Stiller"? I think it would have, certainly a number-one opening and a bigger box office take by at least 30 or 40 million.

As a side question, what about the sort of comedy communities Ben Stiller has been in? For instance, in the 90's it was more him, Andy Dick, Janeane Garofolo, and so on. Now we have the group that contains the Wilson brothers, Will Ferrell, and Vince Vaughn.

I actually found Mystery Men to be quite funny. The concept was different (even though I'd never read the comic it was vaguely based on). I don't know if it would've done better this year or not. More people probably would've seen it, but some people (myself included) are gettng really damn tired of him. He's oversaturating the market with himself I think..every few weeks he has another movie coming out..its getting old.

Yeah, I'm kinda tired of him too, but I've only see one of his movies this year, that being Dodgeball, and it was funny.

I just think Mystery Men is one of those movies that really did have a good wit about it and deserved to do better, and worse, there doesn't seem to be any particular reason it was a flop, it just happened to be a flop.

I thought it was funny. But I only saw it because Janine Garrafalo is hilarious.

Not to mention that comic book movies are a really hot commodity now...I think that would've helped too...

Good point as well. With Spider-Man 2 opening it could have been interesting to see if audiences wanted to see the genre get made fun of.

I never did get the chance to see this movie, I've always wanted to, and then I just all of a sudden forgot about it. I love Ben Stiller, I haven't see a movie of his I didn't like, but zoolander wasn't my favorite pick. I haven't seen envy yet, it doesnt seem like it'll be that great. I just can't wait for.....Meet The Fockers.

The only things I remember about it is Pee Wee as The Spleen and that Invisible guy who was only invisible if you weren't looking at him.

I think I liked it.

I thought it was a funny movie, and if it were released this year it would have been a lot bigger. I am positive everyone agrees that it was better than ENVY.

I still laugh at some parts of it.

"Why am I wearing watermelon on my feet?"
"I don't believe I told you to do that."

I thought it was pretty funny. But if you went to see if thinking it was going to be 5 star material funny, then I can see how you would be disappointed.

"Captain Amazing's got the right idea. He's got that billionaire Lance Hunt as his benefactor -- "
"That's because Lance Hunt is Captain Amazing."
"Oh, don't start that again. Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn't wear glasses."
"He takes them off when he transforms."
"That doesn't make any sense, he wouldn't be able to see."

DVD isn't bad. It has quite a few features for a movie that was a flop.

I though it was alright but, like the Adam West Batman movie, I just don't like comic book movies that are mostly comedic in nature, no matter how funny they are.

I thought the movie was excellent, despite my undying hatred for all things Ben Stiller.

Well Andy and Janeane are way back from Fox's The Ben Stiller Show. Owen and Ben 'connected' in The Cable Guy. Same deal when Ben hosted SNL, him and Will. Then Andy Dick was supposed to be in Zoolander but he couldn't because he was commited to some NBC sitcom (which was soon cancelled).

I enjoyed Mystery Men when it came out and it was TV a few weeks ago and after watching some superhero films since then I thought it was pretty good. Ben Stiller and Superhero films are out everywhere now so it might've done well if they maybe re-released it for a limited run.
