Since 2002, 2 companies (First Dimension Films then Columbia (Sony)), a battle for the lead role between such stars as Johnny Depp to Kiefer Sutherland to John Voight until finally settling on Nicholas Cage, and after dumping Stephen Norrington for Mark Steven Johnson as director this film has certainly seen some stalling but now it's on it's way for a 2005 (or 2006) release date. What I wanna know is what everyone else thinks, because I for one can not wait to see this movie!!! Ghost Rider has always been one of my favorite comic characters and seeing him on the big screen would just be amazing!:) Now here you can post your opinions and any news on this project you may have or find.
Just in case the above got confusing here's a full low down of who's doing what:
Ghost Rider
Release Date: TBA 2005 (or maybe 2006)
Rating: Unknown, but Nicholas Cage has commented "most likely PG-13."
Distributor: Columbia Pictures (Sony)
Genre: Action, Horror, Thriller, Super Hero
Director: Mark Steven Johnson
Screenwriter: Mark Steven Johnson
Cast: Nicholas Cage (Johnny Blaze AKA Ghost Rider), John Voight (supporting role)
Based Upon: The character Ghost Rider first published by Marvel Comics in Marvel Spotlight #5 in 1972. There have been two long-running Ghost Rider series. The first ran from 1973 to 1983, featuring the character of Johnny Blaze (who will be seen in this movie). The second series, running from 1990-1998 featured a new host, Danny Ketch (his origin will be given to Johnny Blaze for this movie).
Premise: Motorcycle stunt performer, Johnny Blaze (Cage) agrees to become the host of a "spirit of vengeance" in exchange for the safety of his true love, but the price he pays is to be cursed with the avenging spirit that takes its form at night as a demon with a flaming skull on a motorcycle of hellfire...the Ghost Rider! (It's unknown whether this movie will actually be a "origin story" or will follow the Ghost Rider on one of his many butt-kicking adventures with flashbacks to his origin.)
Filming: Filming is scheduled to begin in November 2004 at locations in Australia and maybe Texas.

That was my bad I accidentlly put Review. I meant to put News so this is basically a news and "give your opinion" thread.
Also, if someone could please change that title I would greatly appreciate it, Thanks :) !

Maybe you can make that a subtle hint to Frizzo asking him nicely to change the title of the thread...;)

Ah..... Well, I love Ghost Rider..and I would love to see this movie made. But, there is a very strong possibilty it will turn out very badly. First off, if they can't make GR look convincing, then it'll never work. Secondly...I do not want to see Nic Cage as Ghost Rider. I'm sorry..he's been in decent movies, but I still can't really see him as an action hero. I'm just afraid that instead of it being dark and moody...it'll turn out to be campy and bad.... He's not a "typical" superhero..and I'm afraid of the "typical" superhero scenes. How often are we going to see him standing on a roof top...or riding his bike on....a rooftop...or fighting some criminal on...a rooftop.... I want to see this movie so bad..but I just see so much potential for it becoming very cliched.

I'm with Frizzo on this one. I really don't want Nic to be Johnny but I'm still looking forward to this film. I'm a huge GR fan and I love the story and myth behind him
Kiefer or Johnny Depp so should've gotten the role though

I really don't know who I'd like to see in the role, I just don't really want Nic.

After I seen Meet The Deedles (yes , I actually seen that POS...lol) I always seen Paul Walker as Johnny Blaze.
Then he became a star and I definatly see him as Blaze now.
Is Cage still attached to this ?
Please say no.
Paul Walker , Right age , look and everything.
Keifer would be good but too old.

yeah I can see Paul playing Johnny as well, and far as I know Nic is going to be the star

Nic Cage will ruin this for me , He's too old for this role.

i agree with snik, nic realy is too old, and if they are going to make a franchise out of it...
i'd like to see someone unknown playing johnny blaze.
oh and isnt Mark steven johnson the DD-director???

06-19-2004, 10:11 AM
Yes he is. So, if you didn't like the way he directed DD, then you probably won't like this.

actually i'm one of those few who loved DD. affleck was a bad choice though, so is cage!

I thought DD was alright. I didn't hate it..but I didn't love it either. Yes, I thought Affleck wasn't the right choice. I thought his body type was too bulky....they needed someone a little slimmer, you know? And yes...Cage is a horrible choice. Superman...Ghost Rider...he needs to stop trying to be associated with all these comic movies..I don't see him being right for any of them.
JackBauer
06-19-2004, 10:35 AM
yeah, i think they should just go with an unknown actor in the main role. makes him more believable + they save more money for the effects
sniktawt
06-19-2004, 11:12 AM
Yeah Unknown is where it's at.
All superhero films benefit when they use unknowns.
Christopher Reeve and Hugh Jackman are excellent examples.

I loved DD , most people hated it because iit was edited badly , hopefully DD 1.5 will rectify this.

I'm pretty sure DD 1.5 will finally give Daredevil the respect he deserved because it's Rated R, just as Daredevil was supposed to be. But the boys at Fox of coarse wanted to keep this a kids movie so they said make it PG-13 which totally ruined it but it was still ok.
But anyways one thing they did right was pick a good director/screenwriter for this movie. Once they announced Johnson would be doing this film I immediately knew this would be a good movie. I mean Daredevil wasn't great but it was good and it stayed very true to the comics which was good. Hopefully the suits at Sony won't drag this one down to a crappy PG-13 rated movie (despite what Cage has said) like Fox did to Daredevil.

The effects that they would need for ghost rider may be too hard to pull off. It seems like it may look real stupid. its the whole flaming skull thing. i doint think itll work

It'll work.
After Seeing how they pulled off Gollum anything is possible on film.Imo of course.

Yeah..but flames have always been difficult to render properly..and since the main character has a flaming skull, I'd say the flames are going to have a lot of screen time. I hope they get it right, but I just see the possibility of them getting it wrong...

Then your hopes for Johnny Storm in the FF will be low as well.
Unless they really are only giving his Hands flames like they said.

Yes..sadly, they are kinda low. The only way they could do it absolutley right is if the actor volunteers to actually be set on fire. I'd pay to see that.;)

At a press conference for his latest film, National Treasure, Nicolas Cage revealed that his playing Ghost Rider is still not set in stone, despite being attached to the project for several years. “I’m very curious about that,” Cage said. “However, I ‘m still in talks about that particular movie. It’s not a definite at this point.”
What’s the hold up? “It’s really just a matter of the vision of the movie and how it will be portrayed. It’s talks about script and things like that. It’s true that I was involved with Ghost Rider over three years ago and was trying to develop it with another filmmaker. These things are very sensitive. It’s a bullseye and you really have to hit it. Otherwise it may not work. So it’s best for everyone to be cautious and make sure it’s got the right auspices.”
Cage is so invested in the comic book world because of the impact they had on his childhood. “Comic books for me as a young man were one of the ways I learned how to read. There were other ways too, but I was always fascinated by the mythology of them. Because I used to read Greek myths, so I discovered a kind of kindred spirit in the mind of Stan Lee and also DC Comics. And I always felt they were successful in film as well even before they became successful, and I knew the big three would be Batman and Superman and Spiderman. I guess the reason I responded to them was that they had the fantasy of the child’s mind, and they’re a wonderful alternative world to sort of lose yourself in.”
Should Ghost Rider fall through, Cage will give up on playing a superhero. “I think if this doesn’t work, that’s pretty much it. I’ve never made a comic book film and I’ll just sort of enjoy my nostalgic memories as a boy. I don’t read them any more. It’s something that really came from the past.”
Back when Cage was attached to Superman with Tim Burton, he got as close as trying on the costume. “I did do that. I went pretty far down the road with Tim Burton on that. And at the time, Warner Brothers just wasn’t ready to pull the trigger so to speak on the script because it was getting incredibly expensive and that was at a period in their career, Warner Brothers, where they were being cautious with the money.”

sweet, it's kinda funny that I dressed up as ghost rider for halloween this year, without knowing that it was getting made into a movie, so I get to be the original, cool, I have full rights to laugh at the probably 30 or so people I'll see dressed as ghost rider next year... very |=|21c|<||\| sweet...(about the movie too, I'd love to see how he's treated, and, come to think of it, how some of the religious people react to a demnic hero, since ghost rider is possessed by a demon.)

I have better hopes for the fire for GR than FF.
Atleast for GR they can use "old-fasioned" effects and make an animatronic skull and light that on fire. I think that would be better than CGI, with the animatronics it will be real.... all they would need to do is paste the flameing skull over the actors head.
for FF they will need to make an entire flaming charecter... some of the flames, like when it is just his hands they can do live... I belive that there are some gels and stuff that burn pretty cool and wouldn't bother the actor or stunt double.
Nope you can say Frickin , you can say "ass , bastard and damn" too.
funny thing is you can say ass and hole but you can't say *******.

A publicist for the movie Ghost Rider today said filming of the $US40 million ($51.77 million) production was on track to begin at the end of January.
That was despite Cage telling reporters in the United States that he was yet to commit to the project.
Ghost Rider will be the biggest feature film made in Victoria, and is seen as crucial for the future of the Central City Studios in the Docklands precinct.
Oscar-winning Cage has been slated to play the lead character in the big screen version of the Marvel comic book series, with the film project to employ 500 people over five months.
But the American actor has said he needs to resolve issues with writer-director Mark Steven Johnson's script, and his concerns about the vision for the film.
"I would be very happy if that happened and we made it in Australia," Cage said.
While his role was not a sure thing, the actor revealed a scouting mission was underway to find suitable filming locations in Australia.
"It's something we're still talking about," Cage said.
"I know they're in Australia right now looking for locations so it's getting down to the wire. It's not definite yet."
But publicist Fiona Searson said there was no uncertainty about the production.
"None of it is true," she said.
"The film will be made here and he (Cage) has signed a contract ... They're due to start (filming) at the end of January and that's when they always were due to start and that's what they're working towards."
Film Victoria chief executive officer Sandra Sdraulig contacted Columbia Pictures Entertainment this morning seeking reassurance that production would go ahead in Melbourne.
A spokeswoman for Film Victoria, which has provided an undisclosed amount of funding for Ghost Rider under its Production Investment Attraction Fund, said it was "rumour and innuendo" that Cage wanted to pull out of the film.
A spokesman for Victoria's Minister for Innovation, John Brumby, said as far as the government was aware, production of Ghost Rider would go ahead.
