What is do you guys think is the most undeserving Best Picture recipient of the last 20 years? Only becuase before that, there were MANY undeserving Best Picture recipients.

I would say either Chicago or A Beautiful Mind.

Yeah the ones that stole it from LOTR were annoying... still great movies but LOTR really deserved better.

But above all I gotta say Forest Gump. Pulp Fiction should have won.

Vincenzo

Yea Pulp Fiction should hve one that one...

Citizen Kane

Gladiator, easily. I also disagreed with RotK winning, but it was much better than Gladiator.

05-16-2004, 11:21 PM
ROTK is the most undeserved winner since Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan. ROTK only won b/c they wanted to honor the trilogy and make up for snubbing the far better FOTR.

Citizen Kane

FotR was better, but still didn't deserve the win...That should have been the year of In the Bedroom.

Driving Miss Daisy (Henry V not even nominated? Come on!)
The English Patient (over Fargo... splurge)
Return of the King (M&C deserved it)
Shakespeare in Love (The Thin Red Line deserved it)

Gladiator. Seriously, what a piece of rubbish. That horrible story about emperor v democracy - that didn't even make any sense!

Forrest Gump. I enjoyed this movie, but really did it break any new grounds? Shawshank was 1000 times better.

Chicago, I mean I liked the film but it was just a musical, nothing special about it....

I think each lotr movie deserved to win instead of waiting for ROTK because even though it deseverved it, you have people who sit there going, "It only won because it was the last in the trilogy!" WRONG!

I actually wouldn't have minded seeing The Pianist win last year either. TTT had no shot at winning, and rightfully so. The competition was just to stiff that year. The 2001 race down to the wire, it was a toss up between FOTR, A Beautiful Mind, and Moulin Rouge. The right movie won that year though too.

JackBauer

i disagree on forrest gump. it deserved every oscar, pulp fiction was great but FG is the better movie.

ROTK, didn't deserve any oscar. especially best pic. there were so many better films in 2003. the show was boring. it was so hyped that it was obvious who'd win the most oscars, but not justified. Last Samurai had better cinematography and costumes IMO.
and again FOTR was far better than ROTK.

so what if Gump didn't do anything Groundbreaking...did Shawshank? No. Does it matter if a film does anything groundbreaking? NO! Star Wars ep4 was groundbreaking and didn't win.

Forrest Gump deserved that oscar that year. Shawshank was close second, and PF was somewhere after that.

Hanks gave one of the greatest performances (IMO the best) of all time in any film. Truely a GREAT FILM.

Gladiator deserved the oscar that year. What a great film. Great acting, entertaining, one of the best scores to any film, wonderful sets and great direction.

what would have beat Gladiator in 2000?

my votes for most undeserved would be:

2001 - A Beautiful Mind (great movie but not better then FOTR)
2002 - Chiacgo (i don't know what deserved Oscar, but not Chicago, not a Musical)

and ROTK was prob one of the MOST DESERVING oscars wins of all time....

ROTK. There were way better movies out this year. I mean I thought FOTR deserved best pic and I wouldnt have minded if TTT won (because the rest of the nominees sucked). But ROTK just wasnt good enough.

I agree, I was hopig the Academy would give it to a movie that actually deserved it like Mystic River, but no they sold out and gave it to ROTK.

I think TTT deserved it over Chicago.

Titanic, boooo.

American Beauty, I never understood why that movie was so huge, I thought it was so so average.

Last 20 years?

1985-Out of Africa
1987-The Last Emperor (The Untouchables and Lethal Weapon were WAY better and should have been nominated.)
1989-Driving Miss Daisy (Batman DAMN IT! )
1990-Dances with Wolves (Goodfellas should have won)
1996-The English Patient (**** even Independence Day was a better movie)
1998-Shakespear In Love (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN!!!!)
2000-Gladiator (Requiem for a Dream was the best picture of that year)
2001-A Beautiful Mind (I felt "Y Tu Mama Tambien" was a better movie)
2002-Chicago (Minority Report---MURDER!!!!!!)

Prior to 20 years?

1941-How Green Was My Valley (Citizen Kane should have won)
1942-Casablance (I really hate this movie)
1946-The Best Years of Our Lives (Wonderful Life should have won)
1960-The Apartment (Does Psycho ring a bell?)
1964-My Fair Lady (Goldfinger Damn it! )
1965-The Sound of Music
1966-It doesn't matter who won because The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is one of the greatest movies of all-time.
1969-Again, it doesn't matter because my favorite movie is Once Upon a Time in the West and it is a disgrace that this movie wasn't even nominated for anything.

1977-Annie Hall (Star Wars should have won.)
1978-The Deer Hunter (SUPERMAN is KING!)
1980-Ordinary People (Raging Bull should have won.)
1981-Chariots of Fire (Indiana Jones should have wiped their ass!)

But why did Seabiscuit? Oh look another underdog overcomes something.....how original.

Mystic River....oh look a grieveing father......mentally unstable friend.....

The only other movie that I think was worthy of being up there with ROTK was Lost in Translation but ROTK deserved it by far. Oh and I don't care if you disagree, this is my opinion and your not going to change it. But your no more right than I am.

So what if its a true story, so was Radio but people weren't flocking all over that. It still wasn't an amazing movie. An underrated horse and jock win a race. Even if its true it still the basic underdog story that we have seen in films a million times nothing that deserved the best picture award IMO.

1989 - Dead Poets Society should have beat Driving Miss Daisy

1994 - i like FG, but both Shawshank and Pulp Fiction were better films and one of them should have won over it.

1996 - The English Patient was just an aweful movie to me. Jerry McGuire should have won that (i dont care for Fargo either)

1998 - how could SPR not win? ill never understand that...

2001 - as much as i love A Beautiful Mind, there is NO competition between it and FOTR...Fellowship got TOTALLY gipped.

2003 - ROTK shouldnt have gotten best pic...it just wasnt the best movie released last year. i love it, and its in my top 5. it just wasnt the best pic of the year - LiT or MR should have won, IMO.

Shakespeare in Love, Dances With Wolves, The English Patient, Kramer vs Kramer, etc.

A Beautiful Mind was better than FOTR, IMO.

American Beauty deserved it.

Two of the movie's better points. I also think the Directing (Sam Mendes) and Cinematography (the late Conrad Hall) were great as well. I think it won the Oscar in both of those categorys.

Chicago- it should've gone to TT or the Pianist

A Beautiful Mind- FOTR deserved it, but if the Academy really didn't want to give it to a fantasy then Moulin Rouge should have won

These sound more like your favourite movies versus the academy, rather than which films objectively do you think should have won.

I mean, really....Batman, Minority Report, and Superman were all good films, I don't think they really were example of excellence in film making. The Deer Hunter, for example, was told and filmed in a very realistic style - something quite original and different and deserved to win.

The Deer Hunter wasn't very original. In 1978 there was another movie, which also delt with the aftermath of Vietnam and its vets. It was called: Coming Home. It starred Jon Voight (In his Oscar-Winning role) and Jane Fonda (Also in her Oscar-winning role).

I'm not a big fan of the Deer Hunter. I do think the movie has perhaps one of the most powerful scenes in its genre with the Russian Roulette sequence which involed De Niro and Walken. However, have you seen the first 30 minutes of this movie? It is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo o boring! Everything that happens in this movie before De Niro goes Deer hunting for the first time is so ****ing boring. Its basically De Niro and Walken getting drunk at a wedding and calling some guy a ******. I mean c'mon! Was anyone else bored by those early scenes?

The movie is very good in my opinion, but everything that happens before De Niro goes deer hunting for the first time is so boring.

Its just like Easy Rider. Everything is so boring until Jack Nicholson shows up and Fonda and Hopper start getting into trouble with the rednecks.

Of the five movies nominated in 1978 I think either Coming Home or Midnight Express should have won. Sure Deer Hunter was good, but I liked Coming Home and Midnight Express a lot better.

So your saying Amistad, Good Will Hunting and As Good As It Gets weren't boring? Oh please, thats crap.
At least Titanic had way more action, but my point is the action scenes alone doesn't make a film, the intimate scenes are what makes it even bigger.
And it wasn't 10 minutes.

Braveheart
