I found this interesting comparison in a LOTR Philosophy book I snapped up at B&N.
Tolkien based the character of Frodo and the events on one of the Knights of the Round Table, Gawain.
Here is the gist of it:
Gawain
-accepted the Green Knight's challenge when everyone else was too scared
-gave in to the temptation to use the green scarf to protect himself at the last minute
-wears a green scarf at all times as a reminder to him
Frodo
-accepted the Quest at the Council when everyone else was too scared
-gave in to the temptation of the ring at the last minute
-has a missing finger, Nazgul stab wound, and Shelob's stab wound to remind him of what he's been through, plus the lingering effects of the Ring

I love the story, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight! I didn't realize the similarities. But you could relate Frodo to many people...you can even relate him to Jesus, especially since Tolkien used a lot of Christian symbolism within his books.

Tolkien was a genius. Pure and simple. He took religious beliefs, stories and myths and created the greatest epic of our time.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is also another favorite story of mine. We actually read it last year in English, had no idea it even existed before that, but I loved it.

Haha, now I can see the religoius symbolism in LOTR, because it's there, Tolkien meant for it to be there.
Now when people say Matrix has religious symbolism in it, I just shake my head.:D

Oh come on, there WAS religious symbolism in the Matrix movies! Those of you who do not know by now that Neo is Jesus Christ need to get your copies out again!!!
(I don't know why the Wachowski Bros. had Keanu play Neo/Jesus when we all know that he's already little Buddha. :))

that vein. I'd be too damn funny!
