On August 10th, the long-awaited DVD premiere of Tod Browning's notorious Freaks arrives (with an optional theatrical reissue prologue, three alternate endings, "Freaks: Sideshow Cinema" documentary, and commentary by David J. Skal, author of "Dark Carnival: The Secret World of Tod Browning, Hollywood's Master of the Macabre").

I've never seen this movie, but I know about it. I'm sure it's wildly disturbing. I'm just sort of inspired to see someone other than MGM (in this case, Warner Brothers) having the balls to put out a nicely-done special edition of a cult classic.

You know what, its not really that great. Its groundbreaking and everything, but not as freaky as you'd expect. Its gotten a "cult" rep mostly because it feature real-life circus freaks as actors.

Rent a regular copy first and see if its your "cup o' tea" before you plop down money on a special edition.

I started to wacth it when it aired on TV not too long ago. Apart the freak factor, there's not really that interesting a story to keep you watching.
