View Full Version : A real nerdy thread: Best Star Trek movie

My order:

1. Voyage Home - Star Trek was always at its best with a bit of tongue in check. The characters really come to life in this one.

2. Generations - Sure the first time you see it, it's a bit disappointing that not more of the original cast fight along side the new cast. But on subsequent viewings I've really come to love this movie. Good story, quite touching, and its got that sense of time passing and ageing (career v family) issues that i feel ST does so well.

3. The motion picture - It may not "feel" like the ST characters, but it's a great sci-i flick in its own right. Great slow pacing and a sense of wonder. The only thing that annoys me is that guy from 7th heaven.

4. Undiscovered country - By now the original cast was getting tired, and this movie dosn't really feel like a big event like the others, but the great story - pulled from the US-Russia politics at the time - makes this a very entertaining movie.

5. Wrath of Khan - Great revenge movie. More of the feel of how the characters were in the original series.

6. Search for Spock - It was alright.

7. First Contact - Overrated. Entertaining, but I never felt that the Borg were all that threatening. And the whole travel back in time thing had been down already.

8. Insurrection - A good idea building on the time passing issue and growing older theme i mentioned before, but it didn't really work. Felt like just a long episode from the show.

9. The Final Frontier - Since when did the Universe had a centre? Poorly made with serveral large plot holes.

10. Nemesis - Haven't seen so won't comment.

1 - The Wrath of Khan
2. First Contact
3. Undiscovered Country
4. Search for Spock
5. Voyage Home(overrated in my opinion)
6. The Motion Picture
7. Insurrection
8. Generations
9. Nemesis
10. The Final Frontier

WoK itself is actually a damn good film that could stand on its own.

Wrath of Khan is my favourite and the only one I've seen in the theaters. I liked the Voyage Home and First Contact. I'm not a big Star Trek fan, I haven't seen them all and probably won't.

Hmmm...I wonder where you got the inspiration for this thread ?;)

As for the Star Trek Films , there was one Rule that was invisibly attached , The Odd Number films sucked to high heaven while the even numbered ones were great.

1, 3, 5, 7, 9 were dreadful. (3 and 7 were fairly decent but did drag , don't even get me started on how bad 1 , 5 and 9 were.

2, 4, 6, 8, 10 were all great , but with the exception of 4 and 6 all had to be action films not ST films.

I did however see all these theatrically tho.

Has anyone else noticed that the first film (the motion picture) could really be interpreted as a porn? I mean, the whole movie is one big sexual encounter! The ship passing through that cervix-like thing, then impregnation, then birth!

anyway:

1. Wrath
2. Undiscovered Country
3. voyage home
4. First contact
5. Motion picture
6. final frontier
7. generations
8. insurrection
9. search for spock
10. nemesis, which blew major chunks.

isn't it weird how the movies with the original cast are all good to great, while the new cast generally sucks, and yet the original series was only so-so, and the next gen rocked ass?

You have to love the way this man over-acts. The best over-acting he has ever done is in the original Star Trek series. Like in the episode his personalities get split in half. Hilarious!

So,,,,,you think these are a waste of time, and yet you haven't seen any of the 'star track.' You 'don't feel like' seeing any of them, but you also want someone to 'explain you what is it all about.'

ok......\

Well, ignoring the two contradictions you managed to pack into only four sentences, Ill give a brief overview. Star Trek was originally intended as a hopeful look at the future during the turbulent Sixties. It shocked censors to see a black woman, a russian, and a japanese person in positions of authority. The original pilot had a woman as captain, but the network found that wholly unacceptable. STar Trek aired the first inter-racial kiss on American television, and many black actors and actresses today refer to S.T as something that inspired them as they were growing up. I could go on and on, but like it or not, S. Trek is simply part of our culture. [USA]

I really love the original Star Trek series. It managed to discuss serious issues and still be fun and enjoyable to watch. Not to mention the hilarious over-acting of William Shanter. The movies and follow-up TV series I have had a lukewarm reaction to.

I'm probably a rarity or maybe one of a kind. I actually love the original Star Trek movie the best. It had the best soundtrack, the most interesting effects (For their time...they look pretty bad now in some spots) and the best storyline.

All the others were mostly overblown television episodes. Not that I'm saying they were all bad. I loved 4 and 6 also. I can't bring myself to enjoy 2. You can't kill off by favorite character and then *WASTE* two sequels with bringing him back to where he should have never left in the first place!

STMP just had it all for me. It was everything I loved about movie adaptations from other media then. It was bigger than the original material, more gritty and realistic and just had move depth and substance than the television series. Same can be said for the '78 Superman. I'm really wondering if they'll be able to recapture the magic of this one. I don't even think John Williams can outdo his score if he tried.

Anyway, to make this even more longer than you want to read (:D ) I thought all of the next generation movies were garbage, not even worth owning or viewing again. But I'd probably choose Generations or Insurrection if I were forced to pick one (i.e. stuck in a space ship ala MST3K with horrible movies) to have to watch.

And whenever I watch STMP again (It never gets old for me!) I always sigh at those final words: THE HUMAN ADVENTURE IS JUST BEGINNING and wonder what *could* have been.

Postscript: Ilea was sooo hot....for a bald chick. :p

Well, the only way the could convince Leonard Nimoy to come back for the 2nd movie was in giving him a death scene. And with him dead the naturally had a movie that focused on bringining him back for the 3rd movie (which incidentally Nimoy only agreed to because he was allowed to direct). I don't know what the other sequel is you say was wasted.

I had forgotten about him wanting to do a death scene (Damn his ego!) and his wanting to direct. The other sequel wasted - although not totally mind you - was The Voyage Home. It was mostly comedic instead of serious and still involved a less than 100% Spock. He didn't regain all of his 'human' elements until towards the end I think or maybe not even until the start of part 5. And when I say 'waste' I mean that there are only so many movies a group of actors can make before one of them dies or they lose interest in *ever* playing the parts again. Once those movies are out, for better or worse, that's it. And so it is.

I didn't hate part 4 though. I just wish it was more serious and had them actually out exploring and encountering new life forms (Preferrably non-human-like) and learning to interact with them. If they did this in a realistic, gritty and serious vein (ala Alien but without the gore and horror aspects) it would have been awesome. Granted, it probably wouldn't have had alot of the spirit of the original show and the die-hard fans would have hated it, but it'd probably be a better film artistically. I love all of the television series, but when I'm plopping down my money I would like to see something more engaging and different than a regular television episode with flashier effects and louder explosions.

I can understand fans wanting their shows and characters to be faithfully translated to a bigger medium, but sometimes its better to spoof a tired, tried and proven formula (The Brady Bunch movies or Starsky & Hutch) than do a straight conversion (The Star Trek movies).

That's pretty much why quite a few people are getting bored with everything Star Trek now. Its just rehash rehash and rehash. Where's the beef? :p

And don't forget that Leonard didn't want to make the first movie either. Remember the volkan Kirk meets in the beginning? That was supposed to be Spocks replacement.

I guess as a "Trekkie" it's difficult for me to compile a list of movies here, but I'll have to say that the best one was "The Undiscovered Country". It was vintage Trek. Truth be told: I love them all..........although as someone pointed out, "Insurrection" seemed like a regular tv episode, not really worthy of cinema.

The first film was the most serious and artistic and fans hated that (though it still made a decent amount of money). So you can hardly blame them for making a lighter one set on old arth in part 4.

Wow, I still remember seeing the Undiscovered Country in the theatre. It was *packed* with Trek fans! :) That's the way to see a fan's movie, with the fans. It was even more poignant seeing as it was the final film with all of the original cast members. Everyone remained sitting when the credits rolled showing all their signatures and you just knew 3/4's of them had tears in their eyes (*sniff* yeah, I shed a couple myself).

Compare that with Nemesis and its downright shameful!

Yup, I knew that. Wasn't that on the Director's Cut DVD of STMP? :) That was an interesting view.

He (Mr. Nimoy) must have had/has a real love-hate relationship with Spock as a character. Its brought him so much, but it's also pretty much typecast him and prevented him from doing alot of other things.

I think he should be grateful though in a way. You have alot of actors who appear in dozens of films and television series and hardly anyone is aware of their name. He just has to do one character and his immortality is assured.

after some more thought, and watching ST 4 this evening, a little revision:

1. Khan
2. country
3. Voyage Home: it's just a bit too goofy
rest are same

well, actually that's what i had before.

in that case, bump.

Yeah, I hate actors that complain about being typecast. All I have to say is, well, at least you're working! Think about it. I stint in Star Trek sets you up for life for convention appears. A nice little $$ helper if you ask me.
