Well, I thought it was great. If you are looking for a "Pirates of the Carribean" type deal, you may be disappointed. This movie is authentic and for the first time in cinema, you get a true glimpse of what it must've been like on one of those ships. It is tense. You also get a sense of Gene Roddenberrys inspiration for Star Trek. I don't think you'll think it was a waste of sixteen bucks if you pick it up. I know I won't.

I loved this movie! I reviewed it for my local newspaper and rated it very high. i say 9.5/10. It had a lot of elements to make a good movie. Action, but at the same time camaradary. I LOVE paul bettany in this. Crowe is good too.

I thought this movie rocked. Master and Commander was one of the best adventure/high seas films that I've ever saw. I'm also very pleased that it got a few Oscars( I forgot how many). Crowe and Bettany's performances are top notch. All in all, I give it a 10/10.

It's a very good movie. As Legend67 pointed out, it's not all action like Pirates of the Caribbean. In fact, it's rather thoughtful and leisurely. The plot really serves to advance the characters and for us to get to know the crew. So some may be disappointed it's not the rousing sea epic it may seem to be. A lot of it's more about the relationships of the crew than it is about the crew trying to take on a phantom ship.

soundtrack is pretty good, but the film itself starts off well, but then gradually goes downhill, and doesn't have much of an ending. just inviting another sequel

I liked it, but I fell asleep near the end. Good acting, for sure.
If you love the great David Lean epics, this one is right up your alley. The direction and cinematagraphy are impeccable. The characters aren't just there to shoot and be shot at. Plus Weir does an excellent job adapting O'Brien prose...
Best movie of 2003...

Wow I was extremely let down by this film. I mean I rented it and hated it. It was boring and lame and un emotional and just not good. Its only redeeming quality was the acting.

I only got to watch the first half of it today. I have mixed emotions. I don't really enjoy the story. The acting is good. Its slow. I am curious to see what happens in the end though, but the characters aren't that great (need more billy boyd) and its not great, but i would say its watchable (atleast for the first time) without question

It was worth the free rental, but not much more than that in my opinion. Its not a bad movie, but it is highly overrated. The action was bland, and the story was not exactly universal. To understand half of the dialouge you needed to be a sailor, which made it a difficult and unenjoyable watch. Also I wasnt a fan of the blatant VFX.

yeah, the dialog was hard for me to understand, and they spoke so low, maybe i should have just turned the TV up, but their voices came out so soft to me. i will finish the rest tonight or tomorrow, but i think it is overrated, and as of what i saw (half of the film) its just average to me

I don't think that's true. Most people know what a mast is and which sides the starboard and port sides are. If you don't know what the weather gage is the film explains it for you. I think the problem for most people is the O'Brien prose itself (It's like having problems understanding Shakespeare). You have to really try to understand it; it just doesn't come to you.
This movie's not for everyone but is struck a cord with me. It's not like we're watching something that was scripted and acted. It's like somebody got a camera and filmed the real events as they happened. The story doesn't end with the movie, the characters move on and we move on.

it was just ok, i was expecting to hate it, i loved last samurai and everyone was always saying master and commander was the better of the two so i told myself i would hate it. i liked it a lot more than i thought i would, but not as good as its made out to be. i liked last samurai more, eventhough it has its flaws.
