Does anyone else think Sean Astin on the Two Towers Cast Commentary is an absolutely Bore fest. He is the only cast member I almost fall asleep whenever he starts speaking. He hardly even talks about the movie, he goes off subject so often and also he interupts Elijah and Andy quite a bit too. He needs to take some Commentary hints from Billy and Dom because they know how to do a commentary by keeping it interesting and funny. I just cant sit threw Seans rabbling anymore.
Am I the only one who felt this way??

No, i felt the same way as you. he kept interrupting wood and andy. didn't they get in an arguement during the commentary at one point? but yes i also found sean boring...and dom and billy were great as always

With the commentary and last nights SAG award acceptance speech, I've pretty much decided that Sean Astin is either an idiot or a dumb***.

That was uncalled for. I think he's very bright and if he has a point to make he's going to make it. Not always the most fun to listen to, but you need to respect what he says.

What?
Well, he can be boring to listen to, but that is not making him some jerk.
He is a very talented man. Directing and acting.
I'm very fond of him, I think it was so great that he became Sam.
That's my opinion. But of course, Kylesmile, you may have your own.
:)

I didn't hear Astin's speech at SAG, but one of my directors told me about it today -- he said it was about the importance of unions and the problem with shipping work out to Canada as to avoid paying IATSE workers.

Anyone who says Astin is a "dumb***" because of that clearly has no respect for the people who make the industry possible.

I originally posted this this morning on the thread about awards. Since someone brought it up here, I wanted to cross post.

just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

taped their category, and I've watched it several times.

my take on it, and this is just my opinion, is that Sean's speech wasn't a knock at PJ at all. He was talking about the pay scale discrepancies, and that some people can make millions, while a majority of the SAG members make very little. He did say that it was important to help bring the industry back to America, but not in a way that was insulting to PJ. It's just that a lot of tv shows and movies, once made here, are now shipped out to other places, Canada being one of the most favored. I'm not sure how it works, but if I understand how it was explained to me, if you filmed in a different country, you had to use their unions (for all the behind the camera work). His plea about the work returning here, was just about putting our people back to work. (maybe someone with a working knowledge on this could refute or confirm this point, because I'm still not very clear on it)

And his second point about being involved more in union business, and not just when it was awards time, is important. It's easy to sit back, and not take part in something (look how few people vote when we have elections). But you cannot have a sound organization, when its members refuse to get involved. There's more to it, then just putting on what ever color ribbon is the favorite of the week. There's working with your local government to help bring the arts back into schools, or sponsoring grants to promising young actors in college. Any way, that's my take on his speech.

As for the push/nudge it wasn't a push, it was a slight shouldering aside, Sean had already made his main points. After John introduced the executive producer, Sean pushed/nudged Billy to the mic. If he were pissed, and he wanted to finish his point, he could have (and mostly likely would have) gone right back to the mic himself. He didn't. And I saw him whisper to Andy, and I swear it looked like he said "grab it and go". It was hard to tell, but I watched it several times, and he's definitely saying something that started with a "g" sound (like grab)

I completely retract my statement from above. I said it in a spurt of anger after seeing Sean take time away from the other actors and completely not talking about the movie, which was what the award was for. I'm sorry. I really don't think he's dumb, he just should have said what he said somewhere else or at least in a different manner. I'm sure his intentions were good and obviously he's a great actor, so......I'm sorry!

I am sick of people jumping all over Sean. He may be boring to you but I always enjoy what he has to say. He is a very bright person who has a lot of great thoughts on politics and society. You may not be that intreasted in it but people who care about things out side of what happens in the world of cinema do. If there were more Sean Astins the world might be a better place.

Yes he is a bright person, and I love his acting, and I love the way he is in LOTR. But that doesnt meen I have to love every single thing coming out of his mouth. I think it is boring to listen to him in the commentaries. Thats it. I still thinks so :)

If anyplace, it was at the SAG awards where a speech like that was COMPLETELY appropriate. The Academy would've been a different story.

he should do a little more thinking, and a little less speaking IMO.

Is that what he was referring to? I don't follow the movie industry closely, so I didn't know that work was being shipped to Canada. My first thoughts were of LOTR (New Zealand) and Star Wars (Australia).

yes he is kind of pushy on the TTT commentary, but did anyone see footage of his speech at world premiere, i was there it bought a tear to my eye.
something along the lines of:
"theres so much darkness and villainy in the world today and NZ is a shining ray of hope in the world....god bless you all and your families."
i thought it was very good
new zealanders were never very patriotic until these films came along, but i guess it gives us all (i know we all didnt work on it) something to be proud of apart from scaling everest and telling bush, blair and howard to tale their war and shove it

I think he is kind of boring in commentaries, but Sean's still the man. I have been a fan since Goonies. I think it's funny how he acts like the "elder Hobbit" among the group in real life. The others seem to be amused by him when he acts all serious.:D :D

I love when Elijah says that Brock. It explains so much about the dynamics of these guys off set.

It'd be so awesome. Their all so fun and down-to-earth. I recently talked to this guy in my town who is a pilot and Elijah was on his plane returning from Mardi Gras. He said Elijah was tired but very friendly. . . Mardi Gras with that cast would have been a blast.:D

the Elijah/Sean/Andy parts of the cast commentary are the worst. I want to hear funny stories and anecdotes from the set that are scene-specific, not some rambling argument on suicide bombers. Now Bernard Hill; HE knows how to do a commentary. He's funny and has great stories.

John Rhys-Davies and Chris Lee are pretty damn boring too. I think it's their speaking style; very archaic and precise.
