Does anyone think that The Matrix or both of its sequels deseved an R rating? because as far as i am concerned there is no gore, no sex, no profantiy (except when they said s**t twice) and only PG-13 worth violence. i mean, maybe it got an R just when the MPAA was becoming more aware of how violent films were getting, but i still cant see why it is R. And the sequels also did not deserve r ratings either for the exact same reasons. there was nothing there that couldn't pass PG-13.

All the Matrix deserved the R rating it got.
Like in the first one people got shot (with blood). In Reloaded there was the sex scene with trinity and neo (which they showed Keanu Reeves ass). Then there was that dance sequence (which should have been cut) and there was sexual dancing and some nudity. And that there was violence. And in Revalutions there was lots of violence.

ya there was violence, and yes they did show a but crack for like 1.5 seconds, but none of the violence or anything else was past pg-13. For example, in the 1st matrix, you saw guns and ppl shooting bullets at other ppl, but tell me that you have not seen at least one non-R movie that had more intense violence. And the sexual dancing crap did not deserve R at all.

If it was felt that they didn't deserve an R, They wouldn't have been given an R Rating.

The first one?

Yes. The Government Lobby scene is the real reason, although the movie also contains a sustained amount of kung-fu violence, which, after awhile, becomes a rating factor based on volume and also the intensity with which the kung-fu is done. I believe also the bug-in-the-chest sequence was a sci-fi element that would have been a PG-13 at least, and they say the f-word more than once.

The second one?

Actually, the second one I think deserved a PG-13. The sex sequence was not more extreme than in some PG-13 rated movies, and the violence was non-bloody and seemed to be less intense than the rest. The only thing I can think of that really garnered an R was the language, but even then I can only remember one use of the F-word, which is PG-13 here (which is the rule, but for some reason Gattaca gets away with two, and Hollywood Homicide gets away with a whole five).

The third one:

Yes. There is nudity in the Club Hel sequence, although it is brief, but the real reasoning is the violence. The commander's face being slashed when he is talking to Kid, Bane's death and the fight, Trinity being impaled, and the sight of Neo's eyes burnt out were reason enough for an R rating.

Reloaded was R because they clearly show someone getting shot in the head(Mero's henchman by Persephone). It would be interesting to see if anyone can come up with any PG-13 movie that shows someone getting shot in the head because I doubt it. So in my opinion it was the head shot that put it over the top.

X2 and The Mexican show people shot in the head. and they even show the bullet in the head (especially The Mexican, where there is blood seeping from the head) and both of those movies were rated PG-13. I've seen quite a few other movies that are PG-13 that have a lot worse stuff than a halfsecond shot of someone shot in the head.

P.S. - all they showed in reloaded was the SOUND of a gun being fired at the guy's head. All you saw was the guy wiggling and fall down and that was it. No blood, no gore. that shot was probably no more than 1 second long.

The Mexican was rated R.

The Matrix Reloaded also has a sequence in the Nebuchadnezzar (or one of the other ships) where a guy gets impaled by a bar or one of the tentacles of the Sentinels, and blood sprays on the computer screen in front of him.

I think it deserves an R. Although it's mild in the cursing, it's heavy on the violence. Same thing goes with movies like Braveheart, The Patriot, and Gladiator. Pretty mild language and no nudity (well, Braveheart has the sea of asses - but that's still only gonna give you a Pg-13). It's the violence that takes it over the edge.

But Matrix Reloaded, on the other hand, would've probably been R anyway. (In addition to the ass crack,) it has several women exposing their goods through see-through shirts during the rave sequence.

That's true, I had forgotten about that. That scene has several flashes of fairly obvious nudity.

All the Matrix movies deserved an R rating simply for the violence. I doubt you'll find that much violence with that much blood in any PG-13 movie.

well, i guess its maybe just me, cause other movies that were rated R for violence turned out to be alot more violent than the matrix. i mean if matrix truly did deserve R i'm guessing it's border line. And by the way the flashes of nudity were not at an R level, at least to me.

X2 got around it because Wolverine's powers are such that he cannot be harmed by bullets. And when the guy gets shot in Reloaded you do see blood spray onto the lamp/mirror behind him very clearly.

also in Reloaded the opening scene were trinity is shot in the gut in slowmo probably added to the R rating.

They all got the ratings they deserved, for all the reasons already mentioned. In the original scriptments, the Wachowski's had actually planned to make the series ALOT more violent but decided otherwise.

The girls with the see-through shirts isn't enough to change a rating from PG-13 to R, but I do now agree it was an R movie.

You wont want kids to imitate them and jump from buildings to buildings, right?

I jump from building to building. :P

They deserved the R ratings. The violence is the sole reason for that, along with some of the sexual stuff.

Interesting that in the USA it was a Rated R whereas in Australia it had a M rating.

The Matrix/ Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions:

I think the Australian system is really good. Here's the low-down:

G Suitable for all viewers. It is noted by the board that a "G" movie rating in Australia doesn't indicate the movie is intended for children, simply that nothing in the movie will be disturbing or harmful to children.

PG Parental Guidance recommended for children under 15 years of age.

M Mature, recommended for audiences 15 years and over. Note: this is not a legally restricted Australian movie rating, but movies in this category cannot be recommended for those under 15 years.

MA Mature Accompanied. This category is legally restricted in that children under 15 cannot see "MA" films or rent them on video unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

R Restricted. This category is legally restricted to adults. No one under 18 may view these movies in a cinema or rent them on videocassette.

X Restricted. This rating.applies to sexually explicit material which is restricted to viewers 18 years of age and over.

If you remember, there was some pretty obvious nudity in such PG-13 rated films like Doc Hollywood and Titanic. The thing is, it's R if the nudity is done in a sexual way. Considering that the females that appear are seen grinding on their pals, and that it's intercut with a sex scene, this case of nudity was probably decided to be an R.

How about who cares? Either way you saw it right? Does the ratings really matter? How about just let them rate it whatever they want, either way you'll find a way to see it, if your not old enough to and see it alone.

Thanks to Pointy Shrub for posting the Australian rating system.

Other films that got the m rating in Australia are XMen, Spiderman.

I understood that the USA rating of R was due to the number of kicks to the head in some of the action sequences, not due to the sexual content or swearing. That the brothers refused to tone down the head kicking stuff and got slapped with the r rating.
