Can someone PLEASE explain to me what the deal is with Hellboy...?

When I was a kid, I used to read comic books...and I was fairly knowledgable about comic books.

Apparently this Hellboy movie is a comic book adaptation, and I have NEVER heard of it. So I'm assuming that this is a fairly new (within the last 5-10 years) comic book?

Could someone fill me in on that, and also kinda give me a basic explanation of what the basic story is behind the Hellboy character/comic book?

I saw the trailer this week, and it looks pretty impressive. But I'm curious to know if this comic book is a little TOO obscure for the average movie goer.

Especially the teaser poster (which I have a couple, by the way, so if anyone is interested, email me) -- which is really cool, but that teaser poster has been sitting up at my theatre for months, and it wasn't until this week that I had ANY clue what that was about.

Hellboy has been around for ten years now. The basic story with him is he was brought here by the sorceror Rasputin who was to use him for evil, but Hellboy was picked up by the good guys in time. The comic which the movie is based off of is "Seed of Destruction" wherein Hellboy and his B.P.R.D. cohorts investigate a mansion and discover Rasputin is alive and well.

Ever since I read Hellboy, I've been hooked. The character is cool and the stories are very very interesting. I'd like a teaser poster if you don't mind.
