I mean literally took a photograph of living beings on one of the other planets of moons.

Assuming it was released to the public...what do you think would happen?

I for one would welcome a "visitor". Like Smokie, I'd be grinning for about, oh say....a week. It'd probably be the biggest discovery in the last 100 years, I'd say, so ofcourse I'd be fawking excited about it. But then a little anxious because I just read War of the Worlds literraly a week ago.

Seriously, I think there would be a HUGE debate on how we should approach things. Of course, America would make it a military operation while the rest of the world would be thinking of trying to do things peacefully. America would go along with the peaceful approach but our guns would be locked and loaded.

The funniest thing in Scary Movie 3 was when they made fun of Signs. It was in the part where they are in the basement and the aliens are trying to break in through the door. Charlie Sheen said, "Oh they can master space travel but they aren't smart enough to break through wooden doors?" Too funny.


AND an even scarier thought and I don't think people have really thought about this is that it would prove that most religions are bogus. And we know how many wars have been fought because of religion. If there was a mass upheaval of 90% of religions it'd be a giant mess.

I for one ( and I going to get grilled for it) believe that there should be a military presence, but they should not be the ones to intiate connect. I would expect many people to start to panic, we humans seem to panic about everything. There would be alot of overreacting by the public. We would probobly do something stupid like kidnap an aliean and disect it.

There would also be many missunderstandings between us and the aliens, the language barrier alone would be troublesome not to mention customs and traditions.

I agree with Idaho about all the religion problems.

I would hope that we would put aside many our difference and realize that we are more alike than we like to think. Also I'd hope that the UN would have a strong role in dealing with the alieans.

It might not be humanoid, and that's the point.

There was something in the book Sphere about this, along the lines of the possibility of finding a creature we never would have been able to predict at all, because our minds are too set into humanoid characteristics.

The passage in the book had groups of people trying to design an alien, and a scientist would look at them later. He would pick up drawings and go "What's this?"
"The anus."
"Why does it need an anus?"

People wouldn't know. Creatures would tend to have two arms and two legs. All sorts of stuff like that.

I think the reaction would depend heavily on what it is we found, and I think it would be heavily shrouded for a long time, resulting in the major reaction being skepticism.

Yah, if they find ANY life it won't be anything like us, or anything with society or technology. At best what we could hope for would be maybe mol-like creatures, if we're lucky and what's more likely is microbes and, dare I dream, bacteria!! If they go looking around the polar ice caps, it'd be cool if they find some kinda water dwelling fish forms or what have you.

But yah, stuff like that. Nothing where it's an intelligent species with, I dunno, ships or vehicles of any sort. I mean, think about it. If our neighbouring planet had intelligent life the whole time we've been living beside it and they've never left any evidence of their presence to us, then I really doubt a probe will pierce their defenses....

If intelligent life was discovered, I think some people would freak out, but it wouldn't be mass caos. The media would make it look bigger though, as if thousands were going insane. The world would be in shock and awe. But after we make contact, I think it would be sort of like Star Trek: First Contact. If bacteria or tad poles or a Space Monkey was dicovered, I think people would still be in awe, and wonder even more what else is out there.
No matter what, it would be the biggest discovery in history.

Then again, I think the universe would be better off if they just left us humans alone.

Yeah, that was the point I was making. In all likelyhood, the only humanoid creatures live on this planet. Who knows what else we could find out there. We probably can't even imagine. Everyone images ET or those guys from Signs when they think of aliens. Maybe the best example of what we could find in space is in the movie Contact...
