I finnally got around to reading Michael J. Nelson's first novel, Death Rat!, and I have to say bravo. I'm definatly looking forward to your next book, Mike. Novel or Essays.
I can't really compare this to Mike's other two books, because this is an actuall novel and not a bunch of collected essays, but it was well worth the read. The story was really good and really really funny. Mike get's some great lines worked into it.
"Beauty lies in the eyes of the BEERHOLDER!"
"His pants touched me. It was horrible."
"Meh......Meh......Milord Nasty Pants?"
There are some great characters, but the most notable would have to be King Leo. He is a cross between Little Richard, Michael Jackson, and Chris Tucker. As horrible a person this would be to meet, much of what he does in the book is priceless.
If I had to complain about something, I guess as out-there as it was, I was actually expecting something a little more........you know......out-there. There's some parts that just come off like it's just another novel. But then again, it is a novel. But it's written by Mike Nelson. So it's not really "just another" anything except a peek at this crazy world he writes down on paper.
If you're a Mike Nelson fan, pick this book up now! If you just love to laugh and never heard of Nelson, pick this book up now! Or check out his essay books, Movie Megacheese and Mind Over Matters.
Keep these books coming, Mike. I got plenty of room on my shelf.
