Kyle just brought up an interesting debate. Do you think that the American Space Program is a good thing and should be supported or do you think it's a giant waste of energy?

Personally I think that ignoring the universe is a colossal mistake and if I'm right it'd be the biggest mistake that our species could ever make. God knows what's going on out there and what we could learn or bad things we could prevent. Sure it's a big "what if" but what if the Vikings had said, "Nah...I think I'll stay home and watch Seinfeld."

*pictures Hagar the Horrible and Lucky Eddie sitting on a couch*
Hagar: Uhhh...this sucks huh huh huh....
Eddie: Yeah! Heh heh! Let's go and like, sail, or something!
Hagar: No way, dillweed!
Eddie: Heh....ok.

Eh.....I dunno. It's just MUCH easier for me (tho I have a darn good imagination) to see all the things we could be doing with that money, as opposed to all the great things that might possibly come from years of research, providing 'big business' LETS it...(ultra-fuel efficent cars anyone...ah, I digress...)

Anyway, maybe we'll find a cure for cancer or see and thwart a hostile takeover of our planet...then I'll feel like an ass. But until I have a day where I don't see some old woman getting a month's worth of medicine and making it last TWO by splitting it, because she can't afford it......

I can think of many things more important than space travel at the moment. The millons, maybe even billons used, could easily be put into something that can help the puclic in a more direct and short-term way.

We have the telescopes, scientists, minds and technology, that's enough for now. We need to worry about planet Earth, and what's going on in our bedrooms, streets and schools. We need to worry about the enviroement and ozone layer.

I'm not against space travel, or finding out if there was water on Mars, I'd just rather we use our money and minds in a more helpful way.

i think that it should continue. they're doing a lot of good, as our only future is to get off this planet, sa someday,. it will de totally annihilated. even with the dangers, only 14 people have died in american spacecrafts when in space, and 3 on the launchpad (Apollo 1 astronauts Ed White, Roger Chaffee and Gus Grissom), but that's over a period of over 40 years. compare that to the russians. over 150 people were killed in less than 20 years.

we need to see this: the russians are years behind the americans in terms of technology, and the ESA and other affiliates are even further back. we need to get off this planet, and the fastest way to do that is through NASA, who run the most advanced space program

It's all well and good to want to focus on current problems. But one should not focus on current problems so much that they forget to make actual forward progress from where they are. Let science be science, damn it, without it we'd still be living in caves. There are plenty of scientists out there pissing and moaning about the ozone layer, without doing away with NASA. As for a day when some old lady doesn't have to skimp on her medicine, that day will never come. You could do away with NASA and just about every program the American government funds and we would still have poor people everywhere.

Well, I think that the world is over it. At least i know that i am over it. It is like the episode of the Simpsons. "Change the channel, Change the channel. Not another space launch, change the channel."

But on an upside, Cheese is one of the best things out there at the moment.

JD, ya said something about the millions they are spending. i don't know the numbers for the last 2 years, but in 2001, 25.1 billion was given to NASA, and in 2002, 25.5 billion was given. either way, it's a colossal amount of money. that's more that 4 times what New Zealand makes in an entire year, being spent by 1 agency

Wait.....wouldn't it be "space is one of the most wonderful things in the UNIVERSE", because technically it's outside of our world, because if it was inside our world it wouldn't be space, it'd be the fawking atmosphere.

Or am I just rambling?

your being pedantic - but your point is valid space is outerworldly, now im rambling.

Hear, hear. Let NASA spend the taxpayer money of people who don't include myself.

Speaking of NASA, Cassini's arriving next year. Fingers crossed.

Another martian probe or two plumets towards the martian surface around about now - and that comet chasers starting that 2 year return journey bringing back star dust.

Then theres that huble replacement due up, the space station, the shuttle replacement - there alot going on just now.

Then outside of Nasa there is that whole x project thing, europe going softly softly, China talking the big talk etc etc.

NASA isn't just Space travel. NASA invented things like the non-stick frying pan, thermal gear they use at the North Pole and general things you'd never think of.

well in about an hour, a space craft or something will land on mars. and look for water

They got a signal back from it (the nasa one) saying it landed properly and its taking pictures (belated yay)

Aaargh!

It has landed successfully. They've recieved a signal from it. Break out the champagne.

I don't think NASA is a waste f energy simply becuase it only consumes .87% of the anual buget and someday (if we speand more) it could be an investment that pays off. just think we spend about 25% of our money on weapons and that is going up considering the recent wars.

Wait till the military starts investing in space planes.

What I wanna know is why we are sending money to other poor countries when theres still bums living in the usa.

The Moose
01-04-2004, 02:19 PM
that's a good question, but i think that the answer is that some of the ENTIRE country (ie, Ethiopia) are broke, and the number of people who are well off would probably be in the thousands. they probably don't want to address the fact that there's a huge number of bums in the US

Tang is a very good powder which you mix into water to make a very good orange drink. Now there is a premade tang packaged in pouches which you stick a straw in to drink. You migh recognize there mascot an orangatan.
