Does anyone else play with the Hollywood Stock Exchange? It's a great site for movie fans. You can buy stocks of upcoming movies, actors, studios and fund such as horror or fantasy movies. I've been doing it since about March and think it's fun. I'm hoping that I can get people to try it and get into it so that we can give each other trading tips. Anyone know about it? Here's the link: Hollywood Stock Exchange (http://www.hsx.com)
Try it out. It takes a little while to start earning money but once you do it's pretty fun.

Don't worry about it. Thanks Thor.
I would suggest you guys start out by buying some movies that are going to come out soon so you can get a taste of it but also invest in a couple movies that are cheap now but you think will do good when they come out. For instance I bought Lion, Witch and Wardrobe when it was only like $7.00 a share and now it's at about $30. So I made a few million off of that. Also actors and actresses that are cheap but have good upcoming movies is a good way to get rich too. I invested in Diane Kruger who is playing Helen in Troy. I figure since Helen's supposed to be the most beautiful women ever that Diane Kruger will be seen more after Troy and since she's unheard of now her stock was cheap. Also be sure to take part in the contests that they have. Good way to make money. Good luck guys. Let me know what you buy.

Its a very cool site. I invested a ton of money into King Kong about 6 months ago...hehehe...right now I got about 8 million dollars overall, but its still growing. My most stupidest mistake was betting a lot on Tron 2....thinking that it would make it through pre-production hell....grr....I'm 250,000 in the hole on that one, and have been that way for a long time now.

I play a UK game called Celebdaq which is kinds similar but you buy shares in celebrities and the more publicity they get the more you make. I bought shares in Keanu Reeves and Arnie knowing that they'd shoot up when their movies were released, I bouth them at around £3 a share and sold them at over £100 each
IdahoMR2man
12-30-2003, 01:07 PM
Nice. Anyone found any good stocks yet? The cheapies I have are Rising Stars, Watchmen, Preacher and The Lion Witch and Wardrobe is still fairly cheap.

I'm looking for a movie that I think is going to be a sleeper hit -- I was aware of both Old School and 28 Days Later in 2001, but I didn't tell anyone about them (this isn't related to HSX, just in general) and then I regretted not telling anyone.

I bought some Spider-Man, some Return of the King. Sam Raimi, Naomi Watts, Peter Jackson. I expect Return of the King to pay off when the Oscars approach and Raimi and Spider-Man 2 to pick up as the release date gets closer.
I'm also doing a weak job of trying to predict what will be big in 2004...my gamble is a girl named Emmy Rossum, who's in two big films next year (one of them is The Day After Tomorrow, where she's the female lead).
droidguy1119
01-01-2004, 07:13 PM
Alright, now I'm looking at my portfolio. (Damn! Half my stuff dropped! Grr.)
Anchorman, Around the World in 80 Days, Bogeyman (personal investment), Club Dread, Kill Bill Volume 2, King Kong, Return of the King, Meet the Fockers, Mr. 3000 (a gamble), National Treasure (another gamble), The Incredibles, Nosebleed (because my friend told me to), Ocean's Twelve, The Ring 2, Spider-Man 2, The Day After Tomorrow, Van Helsing and Walking Tall for movie stocks, none over 1000 shares and most lower, 800-600.
10000 Bruce Campbell shares, because Bruce is the man and it's all for fun anyway, Christopher Walken because he's got a bunch of stuff in 2004, Emmy Rossum, Joel Schumacher (for Phantom), Keira Knightley, Naomi Watts, Peter Jackson, Sam Raimi and Uma Thurman.
And I just bought some Bill Murray, maybe Lost in Translation buzz will help his stock rise too.
My net worth is only just under 2 million.

Its hard to make money right out of the gate. Its all about long-term investment. I've been playing for years and am only at a touch over 7.3million
My biggest win was buying hayden Christensen at $4
But I'm also losing a butt-load on Cold Mountain, Seige of Malta and Rainbow Six
IdahoMR2man
01-02-2004, 12:52 PM
Don't forget you can "short" the movies or actors that have high stocks that you think are going to suck. I made a bunch off Charlies Angel's 2 that way.
Thanks for the tip Droidguy. I just bought 20000 shares of Emmy Rossum so hopefully she'll pay off.

Here's a tip. Watch out for a guy named Steve Bacic. You can't buy his stock yet but I requested it. But he was the guy that played Hank McCoy in X2. So if he is ever announced to play Beast in X3 he'll be a good investment. Nice and cheap.

Not doing too bad now all my shares are on the rise with the lowest gain at 2%. I lost around $100,000 the other day but I've regained all of that now plus extra, just sitting pretty above $2million but not all of it spent on shares I'm leeping $200,000 for when I find a good profit maker and blow it all on that.
I usually buy those that have risen the most within a certain time period and then when they show any signs of dropping I get rid of them at a healhty profit.

droidguy1119

Darren Aronofsky is an auteur director who's done a lot of low budget-stuff...his most famous work was "Pi" (re: math symbol), and he was on-board the Batman Year One project (he might still be, but maybe he left, I dunno).

Well, with the Batman project, Year One and Intimidation were separate, so Aronofsky might still be involved, but I think you're right, he's gone.
I signed up last night (I hope you got the referral H$, Idaho). This is surprisingly addictive ;). I've been loading up on Nominoptions, lately. Tom Cruise's Nominoption shares are down to $3.05 a share... and I really think he'll be nominated this year. Jennifer Connely, Ken Watanabe, Russell Crowe, and Peter Weir are all fairly low, as well. I also picked up some Moviestocks in some long term stuff (Polar Express, X-Men 3, etc.), and some that are coming out soon. I think this might turn out to be a fairly strong portfolio (I hope so, anyway :p).

The Aviator @ $33 a share at the mo. Released at the end of the year staring leo decaprio and directed by Scorsese those names should gurantee* it at least doubles it share value.

between how much i've investested and my net worth
the difference is 81 cents
Quentin's other film "The Vega Brothers" and "Jaws 5" are pretty cheap right now.
Just hope they actually make those... you'd be up a creek if you threw a lot of money at those stocks, and they scrapped them.
And I can't believe it, but my Nominoptions for Anthony Minghella, Cold Mountain, and Russell Crowe are taking a nosedive... they seem like definites for nominations.
Citizen Kane
01-10-2004, 07:52 PM
They should be...
My guess is that the mixed reception of Cold Mountain is hurting its chances, and Master and Commander might be a dim memory in the minds of people by now...
Yeah... but I don't see the Academy ignoring Crowe or Minghella. I hope my instincts are right ;).

Todays Update,
Doing well today,
My X3 stocks are finally starting to pay off... they're up 2.5 so far today.
Pirates 2 is still seesawing like mad but gradually the price gets higher.
Star Wars 3 has had consistent small gains lately just as is has for the past couple years... by the time it opens it should have a price of well over H$250 or if the gods like me H$300
For all the recent joins who are looking for good cheap stocks, IRON MAN has gone up consistently the past 3 days and is only about H$11 right now. If we get firm news on the flick it could shoot right up as well.

Yes definately. Movies that are going to be in the top 10 financially for the year are rarely under $150 and more than likely around the $200 mark. Movies like LOTR go for about $300 a share.

Freddy vs. Jason pulled in $36.4 million its first week, so AvP should be a good stock to have... especially at that price. At H$53.14 it's expected to make $18 million opening weekend. It'll definitely go up from there.

never assume that a stock will go up on release. I've been playing this game a long time and have been burned countless times. I just about always sell the day before release, unless it is going to be huge, ie LOTR or Bad Boys II or something, or if I'm already losing money on it I'll hold to see what happens. Like I'm doing right now with Cold Mountain which I bought at 63.07 and is hovering around 58. The only reason I'm keeping it is waiting for oscar nominations, which sometimes help the price.

That and I didn't think it was a sure thing yet. For me to be able to buy it I'd have to get rid of close to everything I have. No way. I've got too many good investments.

Thing is coming off of the success of ROTK stocks this should rise in price fairly quickly.
I'd say it'll probobly hover around $120.00 for quite some time.\
Also note that in the write up they said they were getting a lot of requests to make the stock... tells me it's gonna be popular.

Until the movie is released, the prices are much like a real stock market. The values represent what traders feel the movie will make in its first four weeks. Also important to know is that stocks are adjusted after the first weekend they're out. The adjusted price (for Friday release movies) is equal to the movie's weekend box office gross x 2.9. From there, the price fluctuates based on the traders' four week predictions.

I Just bought 5000 of The Brothers Grimm. I'm not too sure how well this movie will do but to me it sounds great.

For stars it is like the real stock market. But after the 4th week of a new movie their value is adjusted based on the average box office of their last 5 films. (TAG adjustments)
