Sine the third movie was 3 hours and 30 min.(2 min. longer than the ext. version of FOTR), how much longer do you think the ext. version of ROTK is going to be that the theatre version?

Anywhere between 3hr 50 and 4hr15.
Most likely somewhere around the 4hr mark.

VoS - 7 minutes
Merry pledging fealty to Theoden - 2 minutes
Aragorn/Palantir - 3 minutes
Gandalf/WiKi - 3 minutes
HoH - 10 minutes
MoS - 4 minutes
Galadriel epilogue - 3 minutes
Random additions/extensions - 20 minutes

I read on the bottom of CNN's newsticker that they cut 1 hour and 5 minutes out of the film, to trim it to its 3 and a half hour theatrical running time...

LOL, it would be a pretty lame extended edition if it was 5 minutes longer.

LAME?! There would be hell to pay :D

I can see the EE being somewhere around 4hrs and 30mins. That would be the ideal length for me.

We've had loads of debate on this over recent months. As the final fine cut was around the 4hr 15 mark (from PJ's own mouth), then this is likely to be the maximum amount. Don't get your hopes up for anything longer (not that longer is necessarily better anyway, much beyond this and I could see the film really dragging and loosing all pace.

I can't see the HoH being 10 minutes long, seeing as the Council of Elrond was only 9 minutes in duration. There is no way that a dorector like PJ will have a long scene full of exposition in the HoH just before the battle at the Black Gate.

Dude, you should nix out 15 min. and lower.

No more than 35-40 minutes of new footage. Besides it will still be longer than the Extended Editions of FOTR and TTT.

Why would you even bother to put 5mins longer or even 20 mins longer. Its gunna be no less then an hour longer.

I voted 30 minutes, because that's what the rumor is -- the final will be about 4 hours.

i think it'll be more than 40 mins

I wouldn't be surprised if they added an hour or more. This is the very last movie for cryin' out loud. I bet they add as much as possible.

I dont know why everyone keeps saying the movie will have around 30-40 minutes, PJ even comfirmed it will be 4hr 15 minutes long. I was hoping it would be 4.5 hr to 5hrs, but after hearing the rumors, it seems it will be 4hrs 15 minutes.:( The only thing im worried about is if they're going to add everyting i want. 65 minutes of new footage doesnt seem enough to add every scene that was filmed and cut out in the theatrical.

What on earth are you worried for!??
40 minutes or so is more than long enough to comfortably include all the required extra scenes! Have you actually looked at the length of added scenes in TTT EE/FOTR EE and reviewd the scenes that will likely be added for the ROTK EE?
PJ confirmed a while back that their final 'fine' cut was 4hr 15. That's loads of time for the film. If it were to start going on for 5 hours then even the most ardent LOTR fan would find it over-long, over-stuffed and dragging. There is a limit beyond which added footage becomes redundant and just slows the whole film down totally.
I want good footage added back into the film to make it better, not just every scene they filmed for the sake of it.

I think Im expecting too much, everyone is talking about these scenes and Im thinking there going to add everything from the books. We'll see though, Ill just wait till NL confirms the length and talks about all the scenes that they are going to add. BTW adt, sometimes longer does mean a better movie, I prefer the extended editions for the films and I would love even a 6 hour version for ROTK, but then again we havent seen the movie, so we'll wait till PJ finishes editing it. I trust PJ, Im pretty sure he'll give everything we want and Im sure the 4hr and 15 minute EE will be awesome.

I think 4 hrs 15 min would be the perfect length. While 5 hours would be nice, it would just be too long. Though I doubt it'll ever happen, I'd like to see some of the extra scenes that wouldn't fit in the EE released just as "deleted scenes", such as Elrond's trip to Lothlorien and others.

voice of saruman and mouth of sauron. The epilogue which has Galadriels narrations is pretty much like the prologue, it ends the rest of the characters story arcs.

Well Ian McKellen said on an interview.
'you have the return of the king EE out Next November and its about 5 hours i believe.'
thats when he was on Jonothan Ross.

I hope Ian Mckellen is telling the truth about the 5 hrs bit, but aint gonna happen, dont know about the November release date, we'll see what happens in a few months when NL releases an announcement for the dvds.

No. I saw the Mckellen interview on the Jonathon Ross show and it was clearly not any kind of factually accurate statement IMO.
Besides, they will only have started working on the EE in the past few weeks, and any final time will not be locked down for a while yet I suspect.
I doubt we'll actually find out the exact length for many months yet though, so plenty of going over and over the debate. ;)

What i dont get is why Ian Mckellon keeps telling false information, why, why?

So then why is PJ saying more than 4 hours and 50 minutes??

It was false information, some danish reporter thought the EE would be 4hrs and 55 minutes long but he misheard what PJ said.

15 and 50 sound very similar. Especially where you're in a chaotic environment.
I always wouldn't guessed an hour longer. It seemed to fit with the pattern. FOTR was 30 min, TTT was 43 min, so an hour would be the next logical step.
adt100
12-25-2003, 06:45 PM
I think Moose mentioned a similar point a few months ago, but I see nothing 'logical' in the additions to ROTK being 1hr. Yes, there could be that much added footage, but equally it could be only 30 minutes or so. It certainly deosn't follow any kind of pattern IMO.
PJ will do what he thinks is right for the film.

4 hrs and 15 minutes is good enough for me--as long as the right scenes are added. Take off the poll, or edit it. The first 5 options are pointless. 1 hour is our best bet.

You're having a laugh there aren't you? 40 minutes for 'random extensions/additions'!
Now that's a version of the film I think I'd pass on. (oh, and the VOS is 7 minutes long ;) )

Actually FOTR EE was 200 minutes long and TTT EE is 214 minutes long, making it 14 minutes longer at 3 hours 34 minutes.
