We can reveal that the PlayStation 3 will ship with an all-new incarnation of the DualShock controller this morning, as Sony Computer Entertainment makes the latest tweaks to the popular joypad.

Unsurprisingly, the device will be called DualShock 3 and will be similar in shape to the current DualShock 2 pad. There will, however, be two major differences: DualShock 3 will feature triggers - a first in the PlayStation’s lifecycle - and will also be wireless, a la Nintendo's Wavebird.

Although the basic shape will remain pretty much unchanged, Sony insiders have confirmed that the DualShock 3 will feature either two highly placed shoulder buttons - one on each side - or a single trigger placed atop the right-hand side of the controller.

The move has been made following SCE’s realisation that modern driving games simply demand such functionality.

The rest of the pad will remain pretty much unchanged. The directional pad will still be pressure-sensitive, as will the standard buttons. Start and select will be in the same place, and the analogue stick will remain unchanged. It was also revealed that a wireless version will be available from PlayStation 3 launch.

I would choose the wired version over the wireless one.

When I see it, I'll believe it but until the time comes where a pic is shown there's nothing much to go on

yeh - i'm with you there thor - but I still dont understand this trigger idea. Does the GC or X-box controllers have them - "a single trigger placed atop the right-hand side of the controller" "modern driving games demand them" ?? Whats wrong with pressing x to go and square to stop?

Well both XBox and GC have some sort of trigger but it's basically the same as having the L and R buttons at the top. Drving games don't need a trigger to move, take Project Gotham Racing for example you use the right stick to accelerate, brake and the left trigger for steering etc. More traditional driving sims just use the A or X button (depending on console)

I hate triggers. Ever since the stupid Dreamcast pad... they're just like shoulder buttons except they take longer to push in. Except the GameCube's triggers... they just feel nice, not as good as actual shoulder buttons, but better than the Dreamcast and XBox's.

i hate the xbox triggers but i think the ps2 l1, l2, r1, r2 buttons shouls be positioned on the back of the controller.

the beef i have with the xbox triggers is not their location but how hard it seems you have to push them to get a response.
