Since I mostly read fantasies here are the saddest books I have ever read
-The Elfstones of Shannara (the ending was so sad, tore me apart)
-The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Sams bravery, the deaths, and most of all the ending)

Elfstones was a good one.
I hate to admit it but the kid's book "The Black Cauldron" made me cry EVERY time when I read it as a kid. Up till like 2 weeks ago. j/k

"The Bronze Horseman" -Paullina Simons
My roommate lent me this book last year when I lived in Calgary. It takes place in Russia during the second world war. People dying of starvation and cold, rationing, and the ending of this romantic novel make it one of the most depressing books I've ever read. I loved it though.

Night - Elie Weisel
The true story of a Jewish boy (Weisel) and his life pre and during the Holocaust. It also won the Nobel Peace Prize (and deservedly so).
Black Hawk Down - Mark Bowden
If you've seen the movie, you know the basic, condensed story. The book goes more into the soldier's lives, where the in movie couldn't. It makes you both sad and proud.

Buy it and read it... it's great... CK would say the same...
Night by Elie Wiesel has to be the saddest book I've ever read. I mean, Anne Franks Diary looks like a slapstick comedy in comparison (well maybe not that far... ;) )

I've read NIGHT.....for some reason I didn't get misty eyed at it. Although the final march in the snow was pretty sad("have you seen my son?!")

^Thats a great book. It made me cry. A lot.
Theres a Clive Barker book called "Cold Heart Canyon". The book itself is pretty bad, but theres a part where the main characters dog gets cancer and has to be put to sleep that made me breah down in tears.
Theres also a book called "In a wheelchair" (I doubt anyone here has read it...) that just completely screwed me up. I cried non-stop for almost 4 hours while reading it and I was depressed for abput 2 days after I finished it... Its a great book.

Of Mice and Men - Don't know why, but the ending really struck a nerve. Steinbeck's characters were just so instantly recognizable, instantly sympathetic, that you can't help but feel for every one of them.

Ghost Soliders by Hampton Sides
or
Ordeal by Sea by Thomas Helm.
I'm a huge history buff and both books are truly sad accounts of tragedies.
Ordeal by Sea details the tragic sinking of the USS Indianapolis during World War II and how many men died in the waters afterwards.
Ghost Soliders details the accounts of a rescue attempt of POW's in World War II and chronicles the awful conditions the POW's had to go through.

Night is pretty sad... there's a book called I have lived a Thousand years which is pretty sad, too, although I don't think either made me cry and junk.
But I am pathetic enough that Order of the Phoenix made me cry a whole lot. When I love a book, I love it to death.

Charles Frazier's 'Cold Mountain'
From what I've heard, while the saddest moment that I'm thinking of are one and the same in the book and film, the book is just much more powerful. I mean, you spend all these pages, waiting for Inman to get back to his Ada, and then, BAM! And your reading, and all that both of them went through to be together one last time almost seems in vain, but yet, it feels right, too...
