There are a number of different benchmarks by which to measure a film's greatness, but my personal favourite is the number of spine-tingly, goosebump-inducing, verge-of-tears moments it has. Return of the King has many. For every unnecessary slo-mo or flashback or awkward cut, there is 3 of these moments. These moments are what make RotK mesmerizing.

Examples of these moments:
- Smeagol killing Deagol to claim the Ring
- the first glimpses of Minas Tirith, and the subsequent shots following Gandalf and Pippin through the streets (Minas Tirith looks absolutely incredible. It is 100% real. It is living fiction)
- The Witch-King's forces issuing from Minas Morgul
- Gandalf riding to rescue Faramir (one of the most beautiful moments ever captured on film)
- the Beacons of Gondor (stunning)
- the muster of Rohan
- The Ride of the Rohirrim ("Ride! Ride now! Ride to ruin! And the world's ending! DEATH!" - absolutely chilling)
- Shelob's lair

These are but a few. RotK starts off slow, with a flashback to Smeagol and Deagol fishing. Very lighthearted and idyllic, but it gets nasty. Deagol falls into the water, spots the Ring, and the shot of the hand grabbing the Ring from the FotR prologue is shown. Just as in the book, Smeagol wants it for himself. He says Deagol should give it to him, because it is "his birthday." Deagol refuses, and Smeagol strangles him. We then see a progression of Smeagol's deterioration once in possession of the Ring. You can see the Gollum in Andy Serkis' made-up face. Fade to Frodo, Sam and Gollum walking through the Morgul Vale. It then goes to Aragorn and Co. riding through Fangorn to Isengard. The Return of the King title appears. Applause. Gandalf tells Treebeard that Saruman has no more power, but not to let leave. Pippin spots the Palantir underwater, grabs it, and then has it taken by Gandalf. I honestly did not miss Saruman. I can't wait to see him in the EE, but I wasn't taken out of the story by his absence. The Grey Company then rides to Edoras. Leggy has his forboding dialogue ("the eye of the enemy is moving"), and Gandalf and Aragorn talk about Frodo and Sam. The dialogue was redone in ADR from what we knew from the trailer (frankly I liked the trailer version a lot better). Pippin steals the Palantir from Gandalf in the night, and looks into it. Just like the book, except at Meduseld. The stone turns into a flaming ball, and Pippin claims to have seen the White Tree destroyed.

I'm not going to go through the entire story, but Ill outline some changes from the book:
- Grey Company rides to Edoras instead of Helm's Deep
- Aragorn does not challege Sauron via the Palantir
- Denethor is not shown using the Palantir, but it is implied

What I notcied were some differences from the trailer (and a few shots from the TTT trailer were used. Eg, Eowyn wide shot on Meduseld, Arwen asking Elrond what he has seen, Arwen approaching Narsil)

Changed from the trailer
- delivery of "what does your heart tell you..."
- delivery of Aragorn's Black Gate speech
- Eomer is not shown grieving Eowyn

So, all in all, RotK is full of brialliant moments. The Ride of the Rohirrim had me on the verge of tears. Unfortunately, some parts that should have had me in tears did not. That is, Mt. Doom, the Return to the Shire, and the Grey Havens. I just did not feel Frodo's alienation from the Shire (though it was shown). I also did not feel the implications of Frodo leaving Middle-Earth. I may have just been to wound up though. I'll re-evaluate it on Trilogy Tuesday. The performances are all Oscar-worthy, though the only person likely of a nomination is Sean Astin, whose Sam is heart-breaking.

****/****

If you have any specific questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Wide shot. Minas Tirith burns. Orcs mass around the gates. The rohirrim, 6000 strong trot slowly to within galloping distance. Theoden, Eomer, and Gamling ride out to survey the scene. He intructs Eomer to take his Eored to the left, Gamling to the right. He'll take the center. He rides down the front line, tapping his sword against the spears of the courageous rohirrim. As he rides he says loud and clear: "Ride now! Ride to ruin, and the world's ending! Death!" The rohirrim answer "Death!." Dernhelm and Merry answer, "Death!" Theoden rallies them once more, "Death!" With that they take off. The camera rises up a slope as if the riders are a wave crashing down upon it. The camera zooms back. You see the full extent of Rohan's forces. You see the orcs' surprised look. You see the Rohirrim them them like, pardon the repitition, waves on rock. Your spirits lift. Gondor has hope once more.

My love for it really has to do with Theoden's rally cry. It's one of my favourite lines from the book, and Bernard Hill delivers it with such emotion and conviction, it's truly touching

It was probably just a little throw-in for the Tolkien fans, though.

Do the eagles show up at the end? And if they do, do they explain why the eagles did not help out more? I think most people will wonder why they convently showed up at just the right momenet, but were not part of the war effort more. A fact that was not explained good in the books. JRRT has the eagles show up as a plot device when its convent for the plot. But its never explained why they did not at least try to go on on an army of eagles, easier then walking.

Well....You are lucky peepz! I'm first going to see it after Christmas! The 27th of December to be precisely! (spelling?)
I could have seen it on the 17th but I wanted to see it on a good sit instead of a bad sit!

So I will post when that day's comin'.

I can't wait either! I am so excited! I am so excited!
Have you heard the song, The Steward of Gondor? With Billy Boyd singing? I won't say he sings beautiful, but he sings so CUTE! You can get the song on www.memoirsoftheshire.com
There is also The Gollum Song by Anna Lenox and Lament of Gandalf!
That's when he falls down with teh Balrog in the Fellowship of the Ring.

Yeah...I thought also that Aragorn fought longer with Sauron through the Palantir! Well, maybe he does on the EE....
I hope!

Were only onto page 4! Believe me, I think that when you post regularly on a board, it's far more annoying to have dozens of threads on exactly the same topic cluttering up the board (and also relegating other intertesting thread onto the next page).

If there are, for example, 100 posts on a topic, then it's easier for everyone to have 1 thread of 5 pages, than 5 separate threads of 1 page.

Over at TORC, Marty's ROTK spoiler Q & A thread reach 78 pages in around 3 weeks!

I suggests eveyone take a trip to New Zealand, even if you are not a LOTR fan.

If you're snowboarder, you haven't really boarded untill you you've hit the mountains of New Zealand...

If you're a surfer, you haven't really surfed untill take on the waves of the Kiwi...

I wish so much that I could get everyone a trip to NZ, I don't know how good of a tour guide I would be, but it would sure be alot of fun. Surfing, rock climbing, bungee jumping, white water rafting, LOTR location tour.

The first thing would we would all do is have breakfast at a little place called "Fidel's." The best little cafe in Wellington.

New Line is Ready to Launch The Return of the King

New Line is getting set to launch The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King with 2,001 midnight Tuesday engagements prior to Wednesday's day-and-date release in many worldwide territories.

Beginning Wednesday, domestic plans include the second-highest number of playdates ever at 3,687, with double- and triple-screening in many theaters fueling a print run of at least 7,100. Some 126 U.S. and Canadian venues are participating in a "Trilogy Tuesday" event in which exhibitors will program the first two "Rings" movies leading up to midnight showings of "Return of the King."

"Kings" will rule on 11,500 foreign screens in total, up from 10,000 on the last "Rings" installment. Almost two-thirds of those foreign screens will bow by weekend, with the weekend's 7,037 foreign theaters bringing the weekend's worldwide distribution to more than 14,000 screens.

"King" will also unspool in 16 foreign territories Wednesday, another seven on Thursday and four more Friday. An additional 13 international markets will get the pic by Dec. 31 and 21 territories bow throughout January, with the film finally hitting Japan in February.

The domestic midnight showtimes for "King" - twice as many as for any previous "Rings" movie - will bolster first-day box office while compensating for problems caused by the film's nearly 3 hour and 20 minute running time.

Two years ago, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $313.4 million domestically and $865.9 million worldwide. Then last year's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers amassed $339.8 million in U.S and Canadian coin and $920.5 million globally.

New Line is expecting the third installment will make over $1 billion in worldwide grosses.

But still....just awesome. Just brilliantly brilliantly awesome, lol.

I will be going to the midnight showing by myself just like I did with the first two installments( so that I can put all my attention to the film), then with a bunch of friends for the other two viewings.

"Hey, buddy, could you stop typing on the idiot box and get me my fries and a 44 oz. Dr. Pepper? And I said NO tomatoes on the McTasty!!".
There is a hiss as the McD's employee shuts off the headset and hits "enter" on the keyboard. At that very moment, the hungry person in the 1985 Dodge Diplomat pulls forward to the first window with his $5.54 in hand. Just another night in the life.....

We will Moose! We will! If the other don't want to (ha!) Then I would be glad to come alone....
I've only tried snowboard at Idre Fjäll in Sweeden!
It's an excellent place....
But if NZ got rated 10/10 then Idre Fjäll would have 2/10!
Seriously! I'm SURE that NZ is WAY better than my place....

You know....I've been thinking. Maybe I should stay off all LOTR pages, including this! :( :waa:

Mr. Frodo, which part (don't need specifics) was the most tear-jerking of the movie? Theoden/Mt. Doom/Grey Havens/etc? Just your opinion to brace myself going in tomorrow! (Who am I kidding? I'm going to be crying anyway!)

Just got back (and believe it or not tthe entire theatre was sold out for a 12:01 am showing - i guess nobody has to work tomorrow)

I don't want to post a long review, so i'll just say that this was a ****ing amazing movie, the best of the trilogy and perhaps one of the best movie i have ever seen in my entire life

i don't have any complaints, perhaps i will see some on second viewings, but i didn't hate anything about this while watching it this is a perfect film!

Jackson deserves his oscar, and the film itself should win aswell

My jaw dropped more than once and I was blinking back tears.

And seeing it as the trilogy rocked too.

I really liked it. Some of my friends were mad that not enough stuff from the book was in the movie. I heard that will be fixed with the EE DVD thou.

I just got back also and there really isn't anything bad I can say about the film. Everything that I wanted to see was in the movie. most tear-jerking part that got me was towards the end when Aragorn said something to the hobbits, I was in tears, so awesome.

All I can say is that I can't frickin wait until the EE, I mean there are some things that they just couldn't fit in, specifically, some of the parts of "many partings".

great flick and great acting

Same here, when Aragorn said that near the end I teared up and cried almost the whole rest of the movie....felt bad for anyone sitting around me...

Oh, one last question, how many of you guys went to trilogy tuesday, i heard people at the theatres were giving away movie frames from all 3 films. And how was it, im assuming it was a really long day for you guys.

downflow311
12-17-2003, 04:21 AM
let me start off by saying i loved ROTK. but i now understand why Morirarity from AICN stated it as the most problematic. PJ relied on the EE too much with this one IMO, alot of plot holes. and also the PJ's patented cross-cutting is worse IMO then in TTT. he cut right in the middle of Eowyn/Wiki for goodness sakes! ROTK has the best eye candy out of any movie i've ever seen. but with all the near-deaths there were in these movies, i was never in suspense. alot of it fell emotionally flat for me and my sister, who had never read the books. she left the movie saying that she was never in suspense in Shelob's Lair or Mt Doom, she just knew Frodo would always make it. (too many near-deaths)

I am writing this review early, and i feel i need to see the movie again tomorrow night for it all to sink in. i was at trilogy tuesday (we got a free shirt, badge, and framed film-strips BTW) and i was kinda tired of being in the theater. while i had alot of gripes with the movie, i had just as many wow moments. the Wiki was great but there wasnt nearly enough of him in the movie. 5 mins total screen time at tops.

Return of the King is the movie thats going to benefit most from the EE by far. and after seeing it, i now firmly stand by what i've always thought, ROTK was not enough to get LOTR a best picture oscar. PJ for BD is a possibility though.

downflow311
12-17-2003, 04:24 AM
BTW the Legolas stunt was too over-the-top for me. Sliding down the trunk was too much IMO.

Fanible
12-17-2003, 04:27 AM
I more or less agree with everything you've said Downflow. Maybe if I finished Return of the King, the book, I would of liked it better?

But as I havn't, the movie just seemed like a downfall in several parts. I was expecting something fantastic especially for Shelob, and it wasn't scary or intense or anything.

Ditto with the battles, due to the quickness and cutscenes.

The music didn't do it for me either. The music setup for the whole Helms Deep was great and powerful. As well as the impact music when Gandalf races down the hill at the end.

The shortness of each scene and the music made everything not so intense, which wasn't good for me.

The film was beautiful, it really is, there are shots in this film that will blow your mind, its truely jaw-dropping.

The biggest issue is the ending, which I didn't mind AT ALL, I love it, the reason I'm saying issue its because I can hear the people around me saying, "why isn't it over?" and "blah blah blah", but i thought it was fantastic.
The coronation of Arogorn was one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen, its so grand and filled with so much emotions, everyone in the theater was applauding during the whole scene.

The beginning of the film........awesome! It added so much to the character of Gollum, which by the way turns pure evil by the end of the film.
Oh man, there so many amazing shots in this film, I can't get over that.
The battles are gigantic, very epic, I can't even describe it, you have to see it to believe it, it's that huge.

My biggest surprise, Sean Astin as Sam. His erformance surprise me beyond believe, he's amazing, I felt every tear, every action of bravery.
Gandalf, was so great too, he takes control and really stands out.
Frodo, you feel his exhaustion by the weight of the ring and the whole journey, very good performance as well.
Every single person was great, Eowyn and Merry facing the Wiki, so cool, everyone applaud, is so exciting.
Theoden speech was great, during this scene I felt my heart pounding like crazy. When the camera moves up and you see the whole army, wow!
There so much in this film, everything feels like this huge event that one have been waiting for, and it does not disappoint.

These film, LOTR, are an example of great cinema, its what going to the theatre is all about.
I can't really express it but this film was so special, it felt like you were saying goodbye to them as well, it all feels huge and overwhelming, it has been an amazing experince that I will treasure forever.

I'm going to go to bed now, it's almost 5 am, I'm going to go see it again today at 11 am and at 8 pm, I really can't wait!

Well yeah, of course. Like I said, i have these problems with the film, but I still enjoyed it. It's a great film.

I guess my problem is is that it didn't really hit me like the other two did. Maybe too many expecations.

i loved the legolas stunt, and so did the audience

it was one of only 3 times the audience broke out in clappter, the other 2 being:

The end (of couse), and
when gandolf starts hitting denathor with his staff after denathor starts freaking out and telling his men to leave their posts

JBond

Great movie! I'm not sure if I liked it better than FOTR but it was truely great! Almost a little slow somewhere in the 2nd quarter but it definetly picked up and kept me interested throughout the end. Also I started to get real sick of quick trite lines that tried to make the movie seem more epic, I mean lines like "And now the final war.....WILL BEGIN!" (I'm paraphrasing). But the dialogue was better than Two Towers (which I blame Gimli for), and I enjoyed it.

As for the end, they sticked enough to the book to keep me from being mad in my opinion...though it wasn't right on, but I realize why some things had to be done. But if ONE thing could have been different, I was really waiting for Gollum to say "Precious!" as he fell.

Now I forgot if the eagles were in the book or not, but either way....my God, couldn't someone have taken the ring on one of those to destroy it with greater ease, they could obviously get all the way to Mt. Doom and handle themselves against the flying Nazgul. ;)

Geez, my audience broke in applause about 5-6 times.

As far as I can remember...

When Gandalf smacks Denathor
When Aragorn and Legolas get off the boat with the Dead.
When Rosie and Sam are getting married
When Eowyn cuts the head off the Wiki's flying thingy.

Probably a few more things...

Fanible
12-17-2003, 04:58 AM
Yeah, although the Legolas stun was over exagerated, it was pretty fun to see. And his expression is funny as well as Gimli's line. Everyone clapped at that scene and laughed as well.

Ditto with those other two scenes.

omg, the Nazguls were unbelievable, some pretty amazing scenes.
The eagles were awesome too, so much eye candy shots.
I didn't mind Legolas stunt, I thought it was great.
The scene of Arwen looking at her son was beautiful, great little scene.
So many awesome things in this film.

anyways, you remind me of this A - hole who was in my audience, he had obviosly not seen the first 2, so for like the first 20 mins, he was whispering, "who's that?", "what makes the ring powerfull?" Who's Borimir?"

finally someone told him to shut the **** up and he was quiet untill the end when he says as the credits role "man that sucked"

what a jerk, i mean why did he come to the 12:01 showing if he hadn't seen the first 2
