Where do you think the state of film, as an artform stands right now? Obviously, it will never completely die, but I think it is in a very sad state right now, and that the state of Mainstream cinema is possibly the worst it has ever been, from a creative, artistic point of view.
Would you agree?

Yes, because mainstream is apparently not art, and people want what it is they're seeing to be chopped up into nice even sections.
Although, Lord of the Rings, or more traditional films like Master and Commander are still art. They're just not quite the same fine vintage that film art used to be.

yes, movies are suppost to be basically entertaining; a few laughs, bit of action.
But film usually has some sort of deeper entertainment level to them, good acting, non-mainstream story, thought provoking ideas, 3D characters, good art direction.
I think it is primarily the general publics fault for going to see $h!t movies and fueling this tsunami of crap movies over the last 5 years. Studio bosses know that they can put little effort into a movie and still make money because of peoples love of cinema.
But it is also a bit of a "chicken and the egg" problem where if the studios didnt make this crap we wouldnt be here in the first place.
really the only way to solve this is to not see movies that look like $h!t, and go and see those art house films!

I look at it like this: some films are "movies" - which are entertaining ones like a Michael Bay movie minus Pearl Harbor. Then there are "Films" - which are movies like Godfather which are an art.

Like Eddie Murphy in Bowfinger...
"That's too much for the audience to think about! It's too cerebral! Come on, we're trying to make a movie here, not a film!"

all movies are art. Alot of it may be bad art... but it's art.
Plenty of great movies still out there, you just have to look for them.

thats because mainstream audiences dont care about art in film unfortuantely. they'd rather see jessica alba dancing around showing off.
I dunno if it's really changed that much... there's always been popular bad movies throughout the history of cinema, it's just the public forgets about them... I think that art films can have more influence today because they are more available for the mass public to view than they were back in the day. Film is much more available today than back in the day when film bosses and the old studio system controlled everything.

I guess movies are a good way for people to relax, and be involved in something that doesn't have anything to do with their everyday worries. You sort of forget who you are when you watch a good flick.

yea, most movies now days are just trash. they just plain suck and are about parties and getting drunk. I'm sick of it. I wish things were the way they used to be.

I agree with you. There is a difference between a movie and a film but it does have a bit of gray in there. It's not completely cut and dry.
As far as main stream goes...that is all profit making. Studios make stuff that will appeal to the largest audience to bring in the biggest profit they can out of it. If they don't get the profit they want it means sequel to make up the difference OR if they make better than what they thought it means sequel because they THINK it was good. (And that is how the sequel to bad movies began.)

first off just because a critic hates a movie doesn't make it bad, i can name lots of movies, critics hated that the averag person loved and still do. also, why should people see art house films, if they hate art house films? also, who is to that only art house films should be considered art, and superior to all other types of films. plus, just because someone thinks a movie is crap, doesn't mean that somebody else doesn't love the movie.
i really enjoyed pirates of the carribbean, and most people did. although, there is a small minority of people, who are upset that disney made a movie that was pg-13, and they think the movie is crap. also there were people who hated the texas chainsaw massacre (remake), just because it was a remake, while a lot of people really enjoyed the film.
