Its a major city in Gondor and I think its also the capitol of it too. The seige of Gondor and the battle of Pellenor fields also takes place at Minas Tirith. So basically if Minas Tirith falls, then Sauron would basically win and take over Middle Earth.

Osgiliath used to be the capital of Gondor but now Minas Tirith is. Minas Tirith lays just a few miles behind Osgiliath. Osgiliath has two sides divied by the river anduin a east and west side after both are over taken by the orcs they then lay seige to Minas Tirith.

Yup, but I always wondered why they never made a wall around the eastern side of Osgiliath after the nazgul took over Minas Ithil.

the men of the time became complacent with the threat of Mordor, even though the Morannon and Minas Ithil had been captured by Sauron's forces, and then the men didn't really see that Sauron could get much stronger

yep...and remember this...the gates at morannon and Minas Morgul used to belong to the gondorians...so with these 2 places guarding Mordor there really wasnt a need to build a wall arnd it's capital
