JEDI....

I have only 1 two part question for you...

1) Did this film meet or exceed your expectations (considering a lot of advanced word on certain changes etc...)

2) Would one have to view this film at least twice just to soak in it's full ganduer(sp?) we have only heard about from afar....

(Thanks for your reply in advance most wise JEDI_THE_WHITE)

How many soldiers are there in Minas Tirith at the begining of the seige? and how does the battle play out.

Gandollum

Edit

Gandollum
12-08-2003, 01:16 AM
I have a few questions, when you answer them can you just answer it generally, i dont want to know too much about them.

How big is Shelob?
How is Denethor portrayed, i heard hes a lot different in the books, is it because of the absence of the palantir? and how was his death scene handled
How was mordor, is it really creepy?
How intense was Frodo's torture scene?
And lastly, does Gandalf go crazy with his Staff

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 01:22 AM
Does gandalf shoot purple lazers out of his staff as in the rotk game? lol no I dont think I have to worry about that. but how long is the battle at the black gate and how many orcs are there.

JEDI_THE_WHITE
12-08-2003, 01:24 AM
I was going to write a new review, but if this is the way you want to do it than... OK.

Let me just request that you follow Samwise and Gandollum's format and putting multiple questions in one post rather than one per post. It keeps the reply count down and helms me not to miss or skip over someone. If the thread grows to quickly then I will miss a question on page 3 and and answer a question on page 5.

Keep no more than 3 or 4 per post...

Also remember, there are somethings I want to keep from you for your sake. You will thank me in the end.

DolAmroth

Ok, let me get rid of this huge question:

There are hints of a confrontaion, you think it is about to happen but a full on confrontaion that we know from the book and WEAPONS OF WARFARE is not there

OK no more Gandalf/WiKi questions. Wait till you see the movie.

This is a good one and I am glad you asked:

The way that the post shelob scenes play out is with Sam coming to a rescue fighting with shelob, he stabs her. Then she runs off. So you can really play the guessing game, IMO I would assume she dies.

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:17 AM
Ok so theres 6,000 in MT and then theres 6,000 riders in the Rohirrum as well. I was thinking Gondor would be a little more.

DolAmroth

Tough to say, it is intercut with the journey up mordor. It almost seems forever, but IN A GOOD WAY.

I stopped counting orcs 2 seconds after they were coming out the gate.

Sickening for Denethor, you can't believe that this man sent his youngest son to certain death.

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:30 AM
ok would you say theres more orcs at the black gate or Pelennor Fields? or is it about the same. And how many men go to the black gate?

JEDI_THE_WHITE
12-08-2003, 02:32 AM
It's about the same.

What gives the battle of Pelennor fields it's grand scale is the extra enemy forces, Harad, Easterlings, Mumkil, Trolls, etc.

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:36 AM
How does the siege first begin like at helms deep that old guy shot that arrow. Do the gondorians just begin shooting their arrows and catapults when the orcs get close enough or do they wait. Do the orcs stop before they begin attacking like at Helms Deep.

JEDI_THE_WHITE
12-08-2003, 02:40 AM
ok, Faramir had been brought back, drug by his horse. Nightfalls we look over the walls and you can see the army of Sauron coming up, Gandalf: "Within these walls is where the fate of Gondor will be decided..." Orcs start catapulting flaming balls and Gondor returns fire.

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:42 AM
so the orcs attack first. Also you said theres 6,000 in the city how many of that were men that came from other places. In the book I belive about 1800 men came from other places to MT.

At the siege, it's hard to tell because no one carries a banner when they run around in groups. Now at the black gate everyone has a banner and I swear I saw in a wideshot the banner of the SILVER SWAN. Even though Imrahil was not there or at least not seen.

Combined with rohirrim and Gondor. aprox 450 to 500 men.

LOTRNUT04
12-08-2003, 02:53 AM
why are all these numbers important.......you know there are going to be a lot, whether it looks like 5000 or 10000, would you really be able to tell????

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:54 AM
well if theres only 500 men at the black gate and the battles lasts over 10mins then it wont seem realistic at all that the men are lasting this long being outnumered over ten times.

JEDI_THE_WHITE
12-08-2003, 02:54 AM
You know what DA, after think about the question on where more orcs were Pelennor fields or the black gate...

I have to same it wasn't close to the same, black gate had more.

It had to be at least 250,000. They were surrounded.

DolAmroth
12-08-2003, 02:57 AM
**** thats a lot of orcs 500men against 250,000 orcs thats RIDICULOS. That means the men are out numbered 500 times. now that I think of it the battle cant last no more then around 8mins or else it would be like dumb.

You have to remember there is alot of little things that happen in the battle which cause it to take us all the way to the destruction of the ring.
Aragorn's speech
Aragorn vs. troll
The eagles

How about when Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli leaving Dunharrow for the Paths Of The Dead. Did anybody else accompany them. Halbarad, Elladan and Elrohir?

If not it would have been a shame to not see any other Dunedain Rangers.

Also when Elrond went to present the reforged Narsil before Aragorn he can't have travelled alone surely.

Hmmm...

A storm is coming is the opening...

Minas Tirith begins as Gandalf and Pippin ride to Gondor

Ride of the rohirrim is obvious

Shelob's lair is obvious

I believe Anduril began as we enter the foundry of Rivendell where the sword is reforged...

Steward of Gondor (WHICH I LOVE!!) begins after Denethor sends Faramir out to certain death and we see him making his way through the streets of MT with his 200 men, then Billy Boyd begins to sing.

First yes we see the Corsairs arriving at pelennor. I don't recall seeing them @ the paths of dead where Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli should have boarded as it is in the book.

The thing with PJ, I was not aware where his cameo was untill after a couple days of the premiere, I read it here first. So I was't really looking. I also hear Richard Taylor has a cameo also.

This is for Jedi whenever he gets back. I read in one of the reviews (cant remember which one) that Merry really gets the shaft in this movie and the other 3 hobbits all have way more screentime. Is this true?........that would be a damn shame.

Also, does Frodo and Sam ever see Merry and Pippen in their respective armour?? Do they have any reaction to it? that would be really cool......

Perhaps more specific questions about Merry, if you please . . we've all seen this in the trailers since FOTR . . but, does Merry pledge fealty to Theoden?

Does Merry say the words, "As a father you shall be to me."

Does Stybba make an appearance?

Thanks. ;)

Ok some Shelob questions:

1. Is it as scary as most reviews say (especially to arachnophobes like me)?

2. How large is the jump factor during this sequence? I mean jumping as in being scared.

3. Approximately how long is the sequence?

1) I don't believe Merry gets little screen time. He gets more in this film than he has in the previous two. Not only that, he gets extra because he goes to the black gate along with Pippin. NO WAY, he gets good screen time.

2) I trying to remember when Frodo woke up after the end of all things, if M and P were wearing there armor. No, I don't believe so.

1) You may want too, but I beg you TRY NOT TO CLOSE YOUR EYES. That should answer your question.

2) Pretty high jumpy factor, especially when Gollum disappears into shadow to let Frodo go it alone.

JEDI_THE_WHITE
12-08-2003, 09:08 PM
I just want to elaborate more on a Shelob question that was asked about if Sam just scared her off or if he killed her:

Like I said Sam stabs her, then she runs off in the film, according to WEAPONS AND WARFARE, Sam gave Shelob a mortal wound. So, it is safe to say she died because of Sam's strike.

How was the ride of the Rohirrim? I heard its one of the best parts of the battle, if not THE best part.
In the preview, it shows Pippen holding Merry in the midst of battle, how does that happen? Is Pippen in the middle of the battle along with Merry, cause we all know Pippen doesnt actually take part in the main battle in the book.

There is a quick reference, but it doesn't really bother him when it is time to go to the black gate.

It's after he gets wounded at pelennor fields, he has trouble breathing, kind of like Frodo before Aragorn gave him that plant.

1) "The Ride" was awesome, the music was perfect for that scene.

2) I think that scene happened inside the city walls after Pip brought Merry beyond the gate, then they got surrounded and then Gandalf took them to safety.

1) Arwen's story is great, you feel sad when she starts to become ill. I think the reason you become sad is because Elrond finally allows that stern wall he has about him to break down and you finally see the love of a father for a daughter.

2) For me there was a bunch, if I had to pick one it would have to be either After Sam wounds shelob and she goes off, he goes to Frodo and he is lifeless, Sam tells Frodo something like "please Frodo, do not go where I can't follow..." or When Sam tells Frodo "I can't carry the ring but I can carry you..." PJ truly captured the spirit of the chatper titled THE CHOICES OF MASTER SAMWISE.

Well remember, I said the "JOURNEY TO THE BLACK GATE is intercut with the lasts parts of Cirith Ungol. The battle itself begins with as the hobbits are already making their up to the crack of doom.

So, I would say the battle itself lasts about 10 minutes give or take.

1) Not sure of the total amount of mumakil, there were two trolls per siege tower and 4 trolls that operated grond

Frodo did have some problems post shelob. Though not the way the report described. I have feeling the report meant either Faramir during the HoH or Mouth of Sauron. Which we will see both in the EE.

VERY WELL, the main wall has great support. But, with the wall being so high, it puts the archers in threat of the catapult and the nazgul

how many rows of men are there down the wall. And like during the battle do more men come up from down below to reinforce the wall. Also is there ever a point like when Grond comes that the wall is ever completely over run by orcs.

One long row of archers. As the siege rages on, some of the men retreat to the bottom help secure the gate and the others go to the third tier and return fire. There is a point when the men begin to get over run, when the nazgul come and when the catapults fire and when the siege towers go forward.

No, Gandalf has some men sent to support the gates, others to the above levels to work the Gondorian catapults

Real quick let me mention that I decided on the 10th of Dec, I will no longer answer questions. That will only leave you with 7 days and some of you 6 days to prepare your self for the magic which is ROTK.

I have to admit, I am very proud of everyone asking some decent questions, there has been hardly any hardcore spoilers, IMO. I have only had to refrain from answering a few. Which is good because I didn't want to spoil you too much.

Hmmm...

The scene that really sticks in my mind that tells me one long row is the scene where Gandalf rode up the stairs on Shadowfax and there was just one long row of archers.

I'll make a phone call tomorrow and try to get a definite answer.

I'll get back to you on that DA, ASAP.

Hey JEDI......first, thank you for taking your time and answering so many questions, thats very cool of you.
I have a question, is it true that the shot/sequence of Arwen laying on bed looking very pale was cut from the film?( the shot of her from the trailers)

Also, did the scene inside the Crack of Doom with Frodo ,Sam, and Gollum had a great impact, did it reach a great climax so to speak?

Couple questions...

1.) How realistic is Elrond's ride to Edoras? Does the pacing of the film give you the feeling that it's believable for him to ride that far of a distance in that short of a time, or is it very "Elves at Helms Deepish"?

2.) Is the way the cutting of the Gandalf vs. Wiki confrontation setup in such a way to lead us to believe it was filmed and will be in the EE? Do you think it will still happen at the gate, after Grond breaks through? The chance of him being on a horseback is about 0%?

3.) Same as question two, except this time involving Galadriel's Narration during the Epilogue.

4.) Tell us what you think about the Eowyn vs. Wiki confrontation. Was it the highlight of the film? Did it come off as cheesy or unbelievable?

First off this is for DA:

DA the positions of the archers atop the main wall are as follows:

2 rows atop on both sides of the gate. As the levels go up, the archers thin to one row of archers. Also on some of the levels in the corners there are these small type catapults, that two gondorian soldiers operate.

2) Oh yeah. There was a quick little part I remember where one of the orcs is talking to the WiKi and the orcs says "what of the wizard...?" Wiki says "I'll handle him..."

0% chance of horseback.

2) Sam

Yes, Merry gets two stabs in the leg of the WiKi, the second stabs distracts the WiKi long enough for Eowyn to get her most AWESOME FREAKIN KILLER BLOW.

I guess it was just a reused theme, the trek through Minas Morgul had the same feeling as the scene where the fellowship was making the pass through Caradhras. So I guess you can consider it Deja Vu...

Wow... That is a tough one. In my heart, I believe they will reward it. Although in my mind, I am prepared for disapointment.

There three things working against LOTR:

1) It is a blockbuster film.

2) It is a fantasy film

3) It uses SFX...

The academy hates that.

Yeah, the hand belongs to either Deagol or Smeagol in the flashback, I forget which one, I think it was deagol who found it first.

It will win, the academy must reward it or people will disgrace the academy as stupid people who cant see the best film when its right infront of them, and there ratings will drop dramatically.

IT WILL WIN! But even if it somehow does not it will still be the best film ever created!

I wouldnt believe them. I remember how Ebert hated Gladiator so much and thought it shouldnt win but guess what, it did. And another thing, the academy rarely gives best pic awards to independent films. Im pretty sure ROTK has a pretty good chance of winning. I cant really thing of anything that will actually be better and this year has actually been a pretty weak year in oscar quality films.
