How on earth did those 2 Cold Mountain songs get nominated!? They were so dull and uninspiring. For that matter, how can 2 'theme' songs from 1 film be nominated?

I won't be watching the Big 2 awards live. I just can't. I could just about live with ROTK losing Best Picture but if PJ lost Best Director to that corpse, Clint Eastwood, I don't think I would ever recover.

ROTK still has 8 more categories left in which to gather 2 wins to make it the most celebrated chapter in the trilogy (beating FOTR's 4 wins). However, there's no hope of ROTK winning in editing or adapted screenplay so I think there are 6 realistic categories left for us to mull over. :)

BTW Smeagol, I agree on your earlier comments about the 'comedians' on BBC1's programme.
Alistair Mgowan in particular. Not because he doesn't like LOTR, but because he's criticising it left right and centre, yet only sat through the first hour of FOTR, and only the first part of ROTK because he 'couldn't understand any of it'. What do you expect if you don't watch the first 2 in full!

The BBC are always trying to make a joke of everything! Admittedly, there are probably only a few thousand viewers watching the show, but those of us that are are big film fans, not some posse of drunken youths wanting a good laugh.
How many other TV stations would employ 3 people whom know nothing or very little about movies to provide 'expert commentary' on the Oscar night?

It won the BAFTA, and I have far more respect for their voters than the Academy in general, so why not win the Oscar.
I think that as we (optimists ;) ) have been predicting/hoping for the last 3 years, tonight is as much about honouring the whole LOTR achievement as anything, and it is totally deserving IMO.
Something so unique and stunning has been created over the course of 3 films, that to not win these awards would be a disgrace.
Look at it like this, Titanic scooped the Oscars will 11 wins, so why not LOTR. I can't imaging many people at all thinking Titanic was anywhere near as good as LOTR!

Look, after following the Oscars for quite a few years now, I can almost GUARANTEE that ROTK won't get snubbed in both of the big 2 awards (Bes tPicture and Best Director).
That's what I've been saying with the 'tick all the boxes' atitude of the Academy. They often pick their best pic, then for many of the technical awards (which many won't know much about) will simply go with their favourite film. :)
That's why you often get 1 dominant film at the Oscars in this way.

I don't think so at all! It was not a page for page adaptation, a la Harry Potter, but that doesn't have to be the case with the adapted screenplay award.
Bringing such a huge, daunting and previously 'ufilmable' book to the cinema in 3 epic films is no mean feat!
Having said that, I wouldn't mind to much if ROTK didn't win this one (although it would be a shame to not have the chance to at least tie with Titanic/ben Hur).
If only those twits had nominated ROTK for Cinemtography! :D
