Having said that, as I said earlier in this thread I do agree that ROTK winning best picture though most likely is not a certainty. PJ winning Best Picture is even less so. There have been upsets at the Oscars before, and we all know how up their own behinds (so to speak) the Academy can be with regard popular films at times.

Although I am very confident of ROTK's success, I am still prepared that, in yet another grave injustice, it might, just might not actually win.

Thank You..;) At least your thinking capacity and judgement has been shrunken by fanaticism and your keeping it real..

I think ROTK is most likely going to win Best Picture, and PJ will most likely win Best Director. But I agree with adt100 and BKB, nothing is certain. As much as I want it to win, I'm trying to put how much I love Lord of the Rings aside and look at it objectively. I also think that while everyone is exclaiming this is the best movie of the 3 and all, IMO it isn't. I think if any of the LOTR films was going to win an Oscar for BP, it should have been FOTR. For me, ROTK wasn't quite there, and while I will cheer like mad if it does win, in my heart I know that if it doesn't I won't be too upset.

I will be upset if PJ doesn't win Director. That man deserves it.

REMINDER:

The WGA (Writes Guild) will announce their awards tomorrow. Expect it aorund 10pm PST.

And also the SAG (Screen Actors guild) awards are on Sunday on TNT.

Glordreen
02-20-2004, 12:08 PM
ROTK doesn't need both of these guilds to win. It can still win easily. But it will pick up at least one of the two, if not both.

Oh that will be a glorious time indeed. The Captain shall show his wrath. I just cant wait until I can throw everything in his face. But of course I will do it politely(or not)

But I think we all deserve a part in the bashing of BKB, after ROTK wins. We shall all get the chance to take our shots at him. But I shall fire the first shot.

Well Honey, I have a thread already to counterattack against yours if it doesn't win BEST PICTURE, that's of course if the wardens at this site allow it to stay up which they won't... And what is all this we deserve a part in the bashing of BKB??? What??because my opinion differed greatly than popular concensus at this site or what??? If you all took your heads out of Peter Jackson's ass long enough, you'd realize that what I've stated in regards to who wins may very well happen.. No one knows for sure folks, no one and if they win, then congratulations and if they don't?? then oh well... I'm keeping it REAL folks which is something you should consider and not let your overlove and fanaticism get the best of you which it has apparently..

Have you ever considered that maybe you could be a little more polite, and a little less patronizing and inflammatory? Many of your posts have one aim, to upset someone and stir things up. According to your profile you are like 38, does it make you feel superior to fight with a bunch of 16 year olds? We have had many civil conversations about issues more controversial than this, it's all in the delivery. If I didn't know better I would think you were Jpdill with another user name. If you can't state your opinion politely then don't do it at all. It is getting really old, and as I am sure you know, most people don't like to be called Honey or sweetie in this way. It's insulting. OH and Pychooo and Glordreen, get over it. He or she has a right to his or her opinion. Don't let it bother you so much. Who really cares?

What a sore loser, I didn't think a guy who plays an ******* in most movies was really such an ******* when it came to being a real person. Sean Penn looks like someone took a dump on his face and he let it harden. Anyway, one thing....I don't think Sean Penn was at the golden globes.

I have just been informed that the WGA will annouce a lot earlier than I first thought. The show will begin at 5pm EST. and they should announce sometime soon after that.

And just remeber. ROTK doesnt need this to complete a sweep at the oscars, it would be nice, but it really isnt needed. Infact if ROTK doesnt win the WGA or the SAG, it still is locked for BP and BD.

As to who the favorite is for the WGA, its up in the air. Lost In Transaltion is the favorite for Original Screenplay, but for Adapted Screenplay, ts a 3-way battle between ROTK, Seabiscut, and Mystic River. At the SAG however, ROTK is the favorite and predicted winner.

Hey people, how is everyone? I been gone for a while, (moving, carpeting, lots of stuff...). LOL, I see that BKB has been suffering a quick lashing, lol, and I do admit to having laughed at two of your guys comments at him. PsychoOoO, as always...."Ah, you guys well get used to me..." and then..."Not me." Very nice. ILOVEKATIE also gave nice ones back. BKB, I've nothing against you, and yes, we are huge fanatical fans, and we love these films very much, but you must look at the statistics of all of the critic's awards and such....if anything were to beat this, it would be the shock of all time....and don't be counting on it. Look at all the odds!!! It says it right there!! But anyways, I know your love for LIT, and I did like it as well...but yes, just realize that we also are entitled to our own opinions and are very well aware when we go over the line....

On that note, HERE'S TO ROTK KICKIN A$$ AND CHEWING BUBBLE GUM AT THE WGA'S!!! :D

The WGA have announced their winner for Adapted Screenplay, and they have given it to American Splendor.

Its dissapointing, cause ROTK deserved it. But this actually helps ROTK, because Mystic River nor Seabiscut won, and also since American Splendour isnt even nomed for BP. So its like ROTK never lost. But Mystic River needed this award to have the odds of a snowblaas chance in hell for BP, and it failed, therefore it is no longer a threat to ROTK, it is dead . Its pretty much smoooth sailing from here on out. Even if ROTK loses the SAG, it will still undoubtedly win BP and BD at the OScars. But ROTK will win the SAG, it is the heavy favorite and predicted winner.

That can happen. But the SAG has nominated LOTR 3 years in a row and has yet to award it, therefore it is due. And also the ROTK deserves this. Also there is a lot of buzz going around saying ROTK will take the SAG easily. I have seen three SAG ballots already and they all had ROTK for ensemble. And also I have heard from a few people that the general talk around the SAG voters is that ROTK will take Best Ensemble. But we'll see.

I was a bit disappointed to see this on MSN, but in retrospect, I wouldn't be devastated if ROTK didn't win Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars. The 3 screenwriters deserve it, but as long as it gets BP and BD, they should share in those awards as well. And you're right, Glordreen: Mystic River hasn't won any major awards yet, and if it doesn't win Best Ensemble tonight, the Oscar will go to ROTK.

holy smoke...

not what i expected.

i did notice, after the golden globes, when the cast were being interviewed by E!, elijah and dom were standing behind the couch, and John was sitting next to PJ and someone else, (can't think who)...

anyway, the interviewer was asking questions, and pete and elijah and dom answered them, but john didn't get to say anything, when the questing was finished, the camera was still rolling, and john gave this sort of "oh, well, what do you expect" kind of look, almost like he didn't expect to get to speak.

Sean Astin and Elijah Wood's should both keep their mouths shut and count there blessings if there not type cast for the rest of there lives and actually get work and the last time Woods was at the mic, he made a popshot at Lucas and his Star Wars franchise for not being nominated like the LOTR Trilogy was and what that young man has to realize, is that whether Star Wars was nominated or not, those movies, Prequels and Old Trilogy have made a godawful amount of $$$ in 30 years and that's pretty ****ing good for something that has been around that long so he needs to keep his mouth shut and get his head out of Jackson's ass... I'll tell ya what: Losing BEST PICTURE or BEST DIRECTOR at the oscars to some other film would silence there ass and it very well may happen, no one knows for sure..

Another thing thats great about this Ensemble win, is that every member of the LOTR cast will get a trophy. Even Viggo, who hates award shows and boycotts them. Even Sean Bean will get one, which is awesome because he deserved something for his great performance in FOTR, and the TTT EE.

I also was shocked by Johnny's win. That should cool the jets under Mystic River, I mean it was good and all, but everyone was acting like it was the big competition for ROTK. Sorry but if a comedic role can beat Sean Penn's dramatic one, its obviously not as amazing as some people think. Not that Johnny's role wasn't fantastic, I loved him in POTC.

I agree with all aspects. I don't want to fuel a troll's fire but I have to respond to BKB. A lot of your posts just make you sound like a SW fanboy who can't stand it that there is another trilogy out there that people are talking about more than SW. I am not just saying this to be a jerk, but your posts trully make you seem that way. Especailly since that last one was about how much money SW was making. Where did that come from? Again I apologize for fueling that fire, but I needed to finally say something, won't happen again

I cannot understand how people believe that Diane Keaton deserved this award over her. Diane was good, my 3rd favorite leading lady of the year, (behind Charlizes and Uma Thurmans' brilliant performances,) but this is just amazing acting. There is no other word for it. I HATE that about the theatres here, that you have to have an I.D. on you to prove you are 17 years of age, like they think that on your 17th birthday a Van pulls up and gives you a Mandatory I.D......not all 17 year olds have a Driver's license.

Yeah - Sean was making a (long) speech about the actors union, and after a while John appeared and bumped him out of the way (I shouldn't say pushed) and introduced the executive producer, then Billy spoke the final words and Andy ran offstage with the trophy. Now that I watched it again it was funny :)

I taped their category, and I've watched it several times.

my take on it, and this is just my opinion, is that Sean's speech wasn't a knock at PJ at all. He was talking about the pay scale discrepancies, and that some people can make millions, while a majority of the SAG members make very little. He did say that it was important to help bring the industry back to America, but not in a way that was insulting to PJ. It's just that a lot of tv shows and movies, once made here, are now shipped out to other places, Canada being one of the most favored. I'm not sure how it works, but if I understand how it was explained to me, if you filmed in a different country, you had to use their unions (for all the behind the camera work). His plea about the work returning here, was just about putting our people back to work. (maybe someone with a working knowledge on this could refute or confirm this point, because I'm still not very clear on it)

And his second point about being involved more in union business, and not just when it was awards time, is important. It's easy to sit back, and not take part in something (look how few people vote when we have elections). But you cannot have a sound organization, when its members refuse to get involved. There's more to it, then just putting on what ever color ribbon is the favorite of the week. There's working with your local government to help bring the arts back into schools, or sponsoring grants to promising young actors in college. Any way, that's my take on his speech.

As for the push/nudge it wasn't a push, it was a slight shouldering aside, Sean had already made his main points. After John introduced the executive producer, Sean pushed/nudged Billy to the mic. If he were pissed, and he wanted to finish his point, he could have (and mostly likely would have) gone right back to the mic himself. He didn't. And I saw him whisper to Andy, and I swear it looked like he said "grab it and go". It was hard to tell, but I watched it several times, and he's definitely saying something that started with a "g" sound (like grab)

As for Sean Astin, I haven't seen the show (being in the UK), but he does come across as being a little bit 'whiny' and goes on a lot!

Here is a chart comparing ROTK's wins to past BP winners. If "yes" is in bold, that means it won that guild. If "yes" is not in bold, it means it was nominated for that guild.

The race for Best Actor right now is actually being considered Murray vs Depp. Since Muray and Depp are the ones with the Acting wins that have voters who also vote in the Oscars (murray won the BAFTA, Depp won the SAG). penn is still very much in the race, but Depp and Murray are the top 2 frontrunners, and Penn is right behind. You could really say its Penn vs Murray vs Depp, but since Penn has only won the Globe, of which the voters dont vote in the Oscars, Murray and Depp have a slight advantage.

There is a lot of talk about the Sean Astin SAG spedch, and I would just like to say this. The speech wasnt at all that bad, people just made to big of deal out of it. The audience even appluaded him. I believe that they understood what he was talking about also. However he should have done it there, that was a bad time, but there was no harm done by it.

Lets just forget about it, and look forward to next Sunday, where ROTK will reign supreme, and sweep the Oscars!

Tim Robbins and Bill Murray have been added to the "presenters' list" at the Oscars on Sunday...they've obviously been told that they've won their respective categories, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered showing up.

Also, is anyone annoyed at the likes of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman presenting gongs at the Oscars? They were both shut out of the acting categories this year so they both should be really angry with the Academy. But what do they do? They still turn up and pretend that they love the whole thing. I hate Hollywood stars who 'play the game'. I wish there were more Viggo Mortensens and Russell Crowes in this world.

I know there is a thread on this, but is just so awesome that I had to put it in here

Bookmakers say they have been forced to close the book on the Oscars five days early following continued support for Lord of The Rings: The Return of The King.

The final film of the Tolkien trilogy is now an unprecedented 1/12 for Best Picture, easily the hottest favourite ever.

Money has continued to pour in for Peter Jackson's movie and Ladbrokes cut the odds on it winning to 1/12 from 1/6 following success at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Ahead of the BAFTAs the Rings was 1/3, but after glory there the odds were cut to 1/6.

Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "We have been forced to close the book on the Oscars, everybody thinks that this is one film to rule them all.

"If the unthinkable happens and another film conquers Middle Earth and scoops Best Picture it would be the biggest upset in the history of the Academy."

Yeah, that's their name. I forgot it for a while.

And as for that Sean Astin discussion, which I didn't get to comment on, I really felt that he had good intentions going up there, but wasn't exactly worded correctly. LOL, he was cracking me up though. I was nervous at first, but I got what he was saying...he is very vocal, which is good to have, and did have good intentions, but there are just some times to just accept the award, lol. It didn't so much leave an odd chord with me...he was just attempting to express his opinion, which wasn't necessarily a bad one either....just couldn't word it right, and people thought it sounded bad, lol. Anyways, I really didn't care. I was just very happy for him and all of them...him especially, since his performance was one of, if not my very, favorite of the year...Nah, strike that, Charlize was. He was right behind her, then Johnny Depp, then Uma Thurman, then Marcia Gay Harden.

Regarding PJ attending the Oscars:

There was an Oscar special on BBC about how the Oscars have become this big fashion event. They asked PJ about it and wanted to know what he would be wearing for the event. He said he really wasn't into all that fashion stuff, but that he had a smoking that had been given to him by fashion designer Gianni Versace two years ago when he attended the Oscars (FOTR was nominated back then). He said he would almost certainly be wearing the same smoking again this year.

So, there is your bit of hint regarding PJ attending the No 1 circus show in town! ;)

Well, I reckon the past few weeks must have been pure agony for the man. For someone who loves nothing more than walking around barefoot, wearing shirts and shorts this new Olympic discipline called "award jogging" must have been hell on earth: Wearing a tux, socks, even *gasps* SHOES... On the other hand I as a woman must say, my pity is somewhat limited when it comes to the shoe issue - every woman on the board who has ever spend an entire day walking around in high heels (and Manolo Blahniks in particular) KNOWS what I am talking about. :D You guys are SO much better off when it comes to shoes!

Oh and as for the Versace smoking: That can't possibly be the one he was wearing for the Globes, right? I mean, seriously, hubby and I were sitting in front of the TV in disbelief. I could SWEAR PJ already wore that smoking for his high school prom! :D

Attending the Oscars barefooted: YUP, I think, that is exactly what he SHOULD do - go there barefooted, Peter! In fact, let the WETA people apply a pair of Hobbit prosthetics to your feet, Hobbit hair and all PLUS the Hobbit ears. I mean, come on, you must think of SOMETHING memorable to do and since you certainly won't get a chance to kiss Hale Berry for half an hour like Adrian Brody did last year your choices are somewhat limited! ;)

I find the whole awards season really funny. ABC has had it's sitcoms refering to the Oscars to boost viewers, so on my favorite sitcom, It's All Relative, which is about a gay couple whose daughter falls in love with the son of a right winged irish Bostonian. The gay couple make an event every year of the Oscars but due to some very sitcomy events they miss the show, and are only able to hear the Best Picture nom, but due to someone making a very loud crack about one of the actors on stage, you miss what the actual winner is. I screamed out
"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"

adt100
02-27-2004, 03:08 AM
That pic got me thining about the dawnless day too Necross. Certainly the clouds spreading from Mordor and general darkness level was nowhere near that dark in the film!

It was mentioned by somone in anohter tread that WETA did tests and found that the effects of such cloud/smoke on light levels is much less than you'd expect, but I still hoped for a slightly darker light, more like dawn/dusk. The odd thing to me is that you only seem to have 2 light levels at MT - i) bright light with oncoming cloud ii) pitch black night (ie when Grond attacked).

The editing always made the changesbetween the light/dark far too abrupt and a little odd to me. Mr bigger gripe is that when F&S where in Mordor though it was far lighter and less threatening than the shots from TTT and FOTR!

Anyway, as for the Oscars, I think PJ would be a little 'large' to do a Roberto Benigni Andrey! :D

I am shocked that there some people thinking like this:

http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&storyID=466197&section=news

Are people really expecting ROTK to sweep up and win every category for which it is nominated? Surely intelligent Oscar Watchers realise that Howard Shore, for example, is not going to win another statuette for LOTR because it wouldn't be fair on the other competitors. Whether you agree with that kind of methodology or not, you have to accept that fairness should be applied to all.

Now, I don't want to display my usual pessimism but I'm worried that people are hyping ROTK's chances a little too much: if it does 'only' win 1 or 2 awards I can just imagine the backlash from the press who label it a "disastrous night" for PJ and co. :(
