I planned on doing just that, just in case. If my happy a$$ is out of bed *that* early, you may be *sure* I'll keep clicking channels until I find the one I'm looking for. ;)

I could, I easily made it though Triolgy Tuesday, and that was with a with a 2 hour drive to the place showing the trilogy. I think CNN will have the oscar nominations live as well, at least in the US.

I can´t help it. If you really love something(like movies,animals..) you even put it before sleeping. I have been last couple days very nervous, and now i can hear the nominees. I was so happy yesterday, and i still am;).

It'll be fun, I can promise you that! My friends never understood why I cared so much for Awards ceremonies, but hey, it's one of the few times in a year where you really see some sense of humanity surrounding Hollywood. It's fun to see the winners' reactions.

FOTR had 13 noms. TTT had 6 noms. ROTK has 11 noms. In all, The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy has earned 30 Academy Award nominations.

For your information, The Godfather trilogy garnered 28 nominations and the Originla Star Wars trilogy got 21 noms.

Bookmakers have labeled ROTK "the second hottest Oscar favourite ever" to be in contention for Best Picture. Titanic was proced at 1/4 in 1997, but apart from that it seems as though ROTK is the critics' choice - so much so that it isn't even worth betting on!

Here are some odds for the two main categories:

Best Picture: 1/3 The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King; 3/1 Mystic River; 5/1 Lost In Translation; 25/1 Master and Commander; 100/1 Seabiscuit.

Best Director: 1/3 Peter Jackson - The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King; 3/1 Sofia Coppola - Lost In Translation; 7/1 Clint Eastwood - Mystic River; 20/1 Peter Weir - Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World; 40/1 Fernando Meirelles - City of God.

carnage4u
01-27-2004, 11:47 AM

I am thrilled that ROTK recieved the most nominations but am upset that Sean Astin didn't get nominated for best supporting actor. This is not just because I'm a lotr fan who is mad that someone from the movie wasn't nominated. Sean WAS amazing, even book purest who don't like the movies could hate his performance, he is the perfect Sam, and I am sorry but Tim Robbins was really good in Mystic River but he has done it before, so many people have acted greatly in roles nearly identical to that. Sean's performance is a first, a mythical miget creature called a hobbit, but he made it believeable, and you actually could feel for his completely fictional character. He SHOULD have been nominated.

Cinematography: The art or technique of movie photography, including both the shooting and development of the film.

ROTK really deserved this nom. It was a beautifully shot film, IMO.

Rogue Program

Many people think that cinematography is all about beautiful vistas but there is much more to it than that. Cinematography can include the shot selection and technique (a great example is Spielberg's decision to use a handheld to shoot the D-Day sequence in Saving Private Ryan), lighting and even film grading. With that said perhaps ROTK wasn't nominated because it already won this for Fellowship but if this was true then why was score nominated again because Shore also won for Fellowship? I was pissed last year that Two Towers didn't get a cinematography nomination and here we are again. And no sound editing either is a little upsetting if not just because I had predicted 13 nominations and I had really figured these two categories as locks. If it was going to not be nominated for something I would have thought it would be editing since the movie is 3hrs and 20min long.

Oh well, just nitpicking really as we should be celebrating ROTK leading the nominations and well on its way to oscar victory.

FinlandCat
01-27-2004, 02:51 PM
Of course, but anything can still happen.Master and Commander have 10 noms. It´s not so bad either. And last year Gangs of the New Yourk had 10 noms, but what did they got? Nothing:(. And last year best picture was Chigaco, they didn´t have a leed in noms...

I'm not too surprised by a lack of acting nominations, although it wouldn't have been out of place to get the odd nod in this direction IMO.

I'm a little disappointed at no nominations for Cinematography and Sound Editing, especially as FOTR won both these awards didn't it!? (but then, maybe that is why, unfairly, ROTK has not got the noms).

Wasn't too surprised that TTT didn't get the Cinematography for '02 as The Road to Perdition really was beautifully shot and fully deserved that award IMO.

I still really don't understand the 'Sound Editing' award at all. Sound, Score and Film Editing are all logical , but Sound Editing? I really can't see why Nemo, M&C and POTC got noms when ROTK didn't. Especially as they only gave out 3 noms!

The_Manipulator
01-27-2004, 03:05 PM
No....me neither!
Sometimes we must then just have our own opinions. If ROTK doesn't win like the Sound or Score, then the oscar people (whatever) are really stupid, and then IMO they don't know what's good or no. I'm not changing my opnion at all just becasue of some stupid Oscar! :|

Was I really saying that? Well, I do care, but it doesn't change my look on ROTK if it doesn't win. (Of course!)

I agree that Road to Perdition deserved the oscar last year but Two Towers wasn't even nominated for cinematography. Yeah....I remember the year with the Oscars on TTT.
I just couldn't understand it. But then my cousin said that the oscar people didn't want to give it so many noms and oscars, first because it really got a lot with FOTR and also because they don't usually give big noms and oscars to movies only with war.

And I wholeheartedly agree....I can't believe no one got nominated for the final and best film of the trilogy...even the first one got at least one nom in the acting category. O well, it'll just go to show that standout performances are not needed to make a best picture; it's the flawless collaboration between actors, writers, directors, and the amazing crew as a whole that makes a film gold.

grrrr... no nomination for cinematography! And nothing for any of the actors!
ROTK had some of the most beautiful cinematography I've ever seen; the sweeping shots of Minas Tirith, cameras traveling with boulders careening to the ground, etc. etc.

I've been thinking about this lack of actors being nominated all day. I just don't see how the Academy can separate the actors from everything else they saw or heard, (the costumes, make-up, the music, the direction)

these fine actors were making a historical reenactment, so genuine were their performances. That not one of the cast was signaled out is just not logical. The movie is so much more then special effects. (even though those are pretty spectacular)

Two last things...

1) did any one else read on CNN about the Academy member that just got busted on pirating movies??? He was in God Father 2 and 3, but I didn't recognize his name. He's been sending the movies he gets to view for voting purposes down to a buddy of his, who then burns a copy, and then returns it the next day. The guy sending the movies claims he didn't receive any money for this. Yeah, right. Liar.

2) In five yrs. from now, will people really remember if Tim Robbins end's up winning Best Supporting Actor?? Who remembers who won 5 yrs ago, (without cheating and looking it up) Very few remember, that's who. What they *will* remember, is this masterpiece, created by Pete (by way of JRR Tolkien) that was magically brought to life by the dedication, devotion and incredible hard work of some *extremely* talented people. The LOTR trilogy will be watched in 10 yrs from now, in 20 and more. Can the same be said about any of those others? Not likely.

Best Sound is about the sounds of the film (Wargs roaring, Trolls groaning, the foley the sound effects basically). Best Sound Editing is about how these sounds work together in the film. :)

A great example of a piece of film which was edited together to try and woo the Academy for a Best Sound Editing award is the scene in Saving Private Ryan where those female typists are typing letters to the families of the dead soldiers. It basically contains the constant noise of keys being punched on typewriters whilst the picture fades in and out randomly between many of the typists focusing on all of them but at different times. On top of this, a plethora of voice-over artists read parts of the letters at the same time, in tune with the editing of the picture (fade-outs) and sound effects (the noise of the typewriters' keys being pressed). This is a prime example of where the actual sound is not the key thing: it is the way the sound is used that really entices the viewer. :)

Ok, how many people did I confuse with that paragraph? :D

Rotk is one of the rare films that has everytihing; great perfomances, great visual effects and cinematography.Great, fantastic music and song.

If we compare for example As good as it gets(Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt both get leading role oscars), and Rotk perfomances, i think that Rotk really wins.Still they asholes didn´t gave even one nominee for actors:rolleyes:..

What the hell is going on Academy:mad:?!

The reason why there was no noms for ROTK is because, many see its as not just one outstanding preformance, but as an esemble piece, with everyones preformace oustanding. So with an ensemble piece its hard for one person to get nominated, cause there would be a lot of vote splitting cause everyones preformances were so great. But ROTK's acting is easily the best of the year, which is why it will win the SAG for best ensemble.

Cinematography was a major pain to hear about. I was really thinking it was a lock for ROTK! But as Glordreen said, I'm not really surprised about the lack of acting nominations for ROTK because it truly is an ensemble piece. The best acting honor it could possibly get would be the SAG Best Ensemble. And I'm rooting for that! But 11!!! You know what really surprised me? The Best Score cateogry! What with AMPAS' strict rules concerning the Original Score, I totally expected ROTK to be left out! What do you know, it's on there! And it's definitely gonna win that one!

Hello everyone....

My apoligies for not having come on here in the last 2 days...I've been busy moving....and also reeling from the anger that Sean Astin was not nominated. I'm sorry....but you know what? He deserved to be nominated! He should have been nominated!

A few days ago, possibly a week ago, I was re-evaluating my judgement on his performance in ROTK, and seeing if it was, as I had said on my initial report, one of the best performances ever in the history of the cinema...then I came back down to earth and thought that that wasnt true. But remembering a lot of the scenes and even more now...I take that back.

This is one of the best performances of all time.

Sean Astin DID embody every bit of Samwise Gamgee and the dude...he just....for me, the reason he was not nominated is because he was inelligible. Inelligible because he was just too damn good to be in that catagory...I'm glad that I have that performance to watch again and again....

Oh god, do I love these movies...

But may it win at the Oscars....and may it, with its two predecesors, become that film that we all have seen parts of, but never in its entirety...and in its entirety, may it be a landmark in cinema history...and may it be remembered, as one of the best films ever made, for all time.

I think that Rotk was so incredible, that it should have more awards, than nothing else movie.

Because... Fantasy is hard category.

It´s hard catecory to get real on the screen, because nobody haven´t seen it.
It´s just imagine.
It´s just magic and fairytale, but still they did it.

They make it real. Like alive. Like Frodo´s and Sam´s journey. Some people dont just get it, that it was so hard to make.

Lotr is not just one trilogy. It´s a trilogy, that we haven´t ever
seen before!

Honestly, how many movies like Lotr we have?

'Rings' characters discuss Oscar snub
by Molly J. Ringwraith

Jan. 27, 2004
MINAS TIRITH (AP) – The city of Minas Tirith has been abuzz today over the news that 'The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King,' while receiving 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director, did not receive any nominations for acting.

"Eleven nominations?" said Pippin Took, of the Shire. "Well, that's good news."

His friend Meriadoc Brandybuck responded by swatting him over the head with the newspaper and protesting, "But the cast is a part of this movie! Aren't they?"

Their kinsman Frodo Baggins shared Brandybuck's dismay. Upon reading the list of nominations, Baggins commented with an ironic chuckle, "They've left out one of the chief characters: the cast. I want to hear more about them." Waxing solemn and soulful, he added, "The movie wouldn't have got far without the cast."

"You almost don't want to watch the awards ceremony," contributed Baggins' gardener and loyal valet, Samwise Gamgee, "because how can it be happy? How can the awards go right when so much bad has been nominated? Folks in that Academy had lots of chances of voting for these actors, only they didn't."

Legolas Greenleaf, of the Mirkwood realm, commented somewhat cryptically on the Academy's choices, "A red sun rises. Lame decisions have been made this night." When asked to clarify his opinion, he told reporters that he had not the heart, for the grief was still too near, and retired for a walk in the forest.

His companion, Gimli son of Gloin, had sharper remarks to make upon the chosen nominees. "Mystic River? What madness drew them there? You'll find more cheer in a graveyard!"

But wizard Gandalf the White urged a more optimistic approach. "Do not be too eager to deal out Oscars in judgement," he advised. "That is not for us to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the Oscars we are given."

Meanwhile, his colleague Saruman the formerly-White was in favor of retaliation against the Academy: "Too long have those peasants stood against us," Saruman said, referring to the Academy's failure to give any fantasy film the Best Picture Oscar yet. "Leave none alive! To war! There will be no dawn for film critics!"

Treebeard, of the Ents, told reporters after much deliberation and exchanging of long names, that he was in agreement with this proposed course of action. "There is no curse in Elvish, Entish, or the tongues of Men for this treachery," he declared. "My business is with Beverly Hills tonight. With heads made of cotton candy and rock."

"I do not doubt their hearts," Eomer of Rohan conceded. "Only the size of their brains." He then returned to the task of loading up forty of his men and horses with toilet paper and Maps to the Stars' Homes, for a "secret midnight mission" that he regretted he could not give details about.

At least one individual, calling himself Smeagol, claimed to be making plans to steal the Oscar statuettes. "Oscar is sooo pretty, sooo golden," said Smeagol. "We will take the statuesss once the Hollywood snobses are dead! Ye-esss, precious!" He then quickly added, groveling at the feet of reporters, "No! No! We were only joking! Smeagol wouldn't hurt a fly! Nice movie industry." He crawled away before he could be questioned further.

Still others appeared not to care about the snub. Lady Eowyn of Rohan said with a shrug, "The women of this country learned long ago that those without Oscar nominations may still get dates to awards ceremonies. I fear neither critics nor fans." Lord Boromir, a native of Minas Tirith, dismissed the concerns, claiming, "Gondor has no actors. Gondor needs no actors."

But overall the mood was one of mild disgust. As Lord Aragorn put it to reporters, "The day may come when the Academy is able to find their ass with a flashlight. But this is not that day."

LMAO!!!! Omg that was great!

That was freaking AWESOME!

Oh, and I read that article about which you guys have been so vitriolic at TORn. I was very tempted indeed to write her a nasty email, but I respected the fact that she was a different person and was thus entitled to her own opinion. It would've felt good to say that she was ignorant and unable to recognize true humanity in anything (especially since ROTK probably has the most human emotion at its core). Granted, Mystic River is a tragedy for the papers, and Lost in Translation is a bittersweet romp. But without the actors who put 7 years of their lives and an incredible load of their souls and insights into 3 movies filmed simultaneously, LOTR would not be the proud recipient of "11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture." Indeed, LOTR would've been a complete and utter failure. So instead of writing her a nasty email, I'm venting with you all. :)

That's pretty sad.

They're beginning to look like pathetic whiners with their continual side-swipes at LOTR. Obviously they don't have enough confidence in their own film to campaign on its merits.

Being the front-runner for the two biggest Oscars, ROTK is inevitably subjected to all sorts of dirty and tricksy smear campaigns. Here is the latest 'please don't for LOTR' quote, this time attributed to the screenwriter of Mystic River:

"There's kind of a feeling that you have to vote for all three of them, which I don't think is necessarily fair," says Mystic River screenwriting nominee Brian Helgeland. "[The Question should be] 'Is Lord of the Rings III a better movie than Mystic River or Seabiscuit or Master and Commander?' Not 'Are Lord of the Rings I, II, and III better than the rest of the movies?'"

Viggo never siad that no one should be nomed. He said that the performances that they give are not the kind the acadmey recognizes. He is wrong about the performance not being good enough for the Oscars. But right about the Academy not recognizing them.

Sean, Elijah, Ian, Andy, and Billy all deserved noms!

Viggo comments can be seen as largely accurate IMO with regard the fundamental points mentioned. As ever though, people tend to tottally over-react to such things and take things out of context. He certainly didn't 'bash' ROTK as some comments I've read have said.

I don't know if I've already posted this, but every time I see the Oscar Nominees' list, I feel a surge of anger because Andrew Lesnie wasn't nominated! How could the Academy pass over his achievement in ROTK? He had incredible cinematography! I mean, come on! Did they watch Pelennor Fields? The Ride of the Rohirrim? The Lighting of the Beacons? I know much of those scenes comprised of special effects, but the New Zealand countryside provided much of the backdrop, and Andrew Lesnie was responsible for that! I really hope ROTK wins everything, and that PJ thanks Andrew Lesnie.
