If anyone did not see what Gene Shalit said on that FYC ad a few pages ago, which I wanted to find but couldn't...this is another quote of his that I love...and was fully surprised to find coming from him...an awesome quote which I hope they use on one of these ads soon....

"I have never before seen the equal of The Lord of the Rings, nor ever expect to. It is the picture of the century."
Gene Shalit, Film Critic

I got a feeling he will be up for Supporting at the Oscars. Just a feeling. Whenever critics discuss the acting in ROTK, it's always positive for Sean Astin....plus his mother has won it before, and Hollywood loves legacies :D

RebelwithaCause
01-25-2004, 04:29 PM
That could very well happen.

Yeah....I really hope so. I don't think LOTR actors and actresses has got that much attention to the big awards and oscars....! :(

The Moose
01-25-2004, 05:15 PM
i think that we should have our own one, to save the people getting pissed at us for saying that ROTK has to win, and stuff like that

Glordreen
01-25-2004, 05:16 PM
No change of plans

The live coverage chat for us ringers will remian here. It starts at 7pm pacific time. Be here, or be......uh........elsewhere.

3hrs and 25 min till chat begins. Well actually it can already begin, but thats the time when the Arrival show starts.

RebelwithaCause
01-25-2004, 06:37 PM
My only problem is that it starts at 5PM eastern time, and the awards show begins at 8PM eastern time...see, the show will be over when we start watching it...my only problem is that some butthead might come in here and spoil it for us...the results are announced while the show is going on. Is that still gonna be a problem?

Glordreen
01-25-2004, 06:45 PM
Hopefully that wont happen. I think we'll be alright if we dont make a new thread, and I have only metioned it in here, so we should be okay.

The Moose
01-25-2004, 07:06 PM
i've got the arrival show here live, but the TV is a LONG way away from the comp, so i can be either here or there

adt100
01-25-2004, 07:09 PM
According to TORN the show starts at 8.00pm EST, which as Smeagol said would be 1.00am GMT, just under 1 hour away.

That's surely 5pm PST, so what's with the 7.00pm figure?

The Moose
01-25-2004, 07:13 PM
i have no idea. i just realised that it's actually 2 pm here that the ceremony starts

The Moose
01-25-2004, 07:38 PM
8pm EST? this is interesting indeed. that meets with thte 2 pm, at which time the red carpet stuff ends. i'll zip off and see whet's happening on the TV

Glordreen
01-25-2004, 07:53 PM

Glordreen

Moose. isn't it on live on E! from 5pm to 7pm. then on tv2 from 8pm to 10.30pm???

Glordreen
01-25-2004, 08:30 PM
Not where I am. It just has the red carpet stuff then goes to a different show. NBC has the rights to it, so Im pretty sure it will only be playing on NBC.

I wish I could give credit where credit was due, but I haven't a clue. A girl I know on a newsgroup I used to be on all the time, alt.fairs.renaissance, had it in hers, and we joked about it one time when we'd been inundated with trolls. It seemed to fit. ;)

wow, so awesome..the film/films are finally getting the recognition they deserve.
After this, I just don't see how another film can beat LOTR at the Oscars, I just can't wait for that historic moment, its going to be the first time in Oscar history that a fantasy film wins best pic not to mention from the third film in a trilogy!
I loved seeing Peter Jackson receive his award for Best Director, he's always so generous and humble, I love the fact that he always acknowledges his fellow nominees, not everyone does that.
Can't wait for Oscar night, in true Bilbo words "It will be a night to remember".

Yep, caught that, and it pissed me off too.

talk about sour grapes. in every interview I saw Clint give, he'd make that same point, but in different words. He'd like to say that it was an "actors" movie, not relying on "special effects" to move the story. An "actors" movie... WTF does he think the cast of LOTR were??? cgi?? I'd always liked him in the past, but this is just too much. I realize that the industry they are in is very competitive, but he's been recognized for his work, he's received his props, *how* can he begrudge Pete his moment of triumph???? Why??? They were comments totally beneath him, and I don't think I'll ever be able to look at his work in quite the same way.

Did anyone catch the fact that when Tim Robbins went up for his award, they were playing LOTR music??? Even my 10 yr said, "i know that music... he wasn't in that movie!"

Yes, wasn't that when Susan Sarandon introduced it?

I thought I noticed another dig too.....
When Al Pacino accepted his award he said, "at least I am not out of breath." (or something like that) I thought that was a dig at PJ who was up there right before him and did seem out of breath when he got on stage. I don't know, maybe it was just me. What do you think? Is all of Hollywood against ROTK? Yes the special effects were awesome, but that is not what made the movie. If the acting hadn't been so incredible it never would have went over so well. Does anyone think that any actors for ROTK will be nominated. I mean, how can sean astin not get a nom. Soon after the release, predictions were that he was a sure thing to get a supporting nomination. What is the latest on this?

Also, ROTK is going to sweep the Oscars, i can feel it. It swept the Globes, and its momentum is too high. I knew there was no way they wouldn't give PJ the BD. It can't lose BP or BD at the Oscars, not after winning at the Globes. Am i right?

The Moose
01-26-2004, 07:54 PM
i think that sean astin will probably get nominated. overall, i'm guessing somewhere aroung 12 nominations, and hopefully sweeping all the categories it's nominated for. there is still the possibility that ROTK may not get BP or BD. the GGs are a general indication only. 6 of the last 10 winners of BD at the GGs won BD at the oscars, and 5 of 10 GG BP winners won BP at the oscars

I just read an article over at theonering.net, from Roger Ebert, and he thinks that either Viggo Mortinson, Astin or Gollum have a chance to get a nom for sup. actor. He also says the ROTK will most likely win.

I think Gollum had a bigger and better played role in TTT, just IMO, and should have been nom last year, and that Astin deserves that nom more then any other actors

The Moose
01-26-2004, 09:01 PM
well, if Viggo gets nominated, i wouldn't be surprised if he turns it down, as he's already said he may, as he doesn't really like all the public mumbo jumbo of awards and things like that. i would like to see Andy Serkis get some recognition for the work that he did, and sean has to get nominated. he was awesome

The one thing I really liked (besides ROTK kicking all sorts of butt :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: :applaud: ) is that there was no other real "stand out" movie. Cold Mountain got something, Mystic River got something, Lost in Translation got something, and Monster picked up one. It was nicely spread out. To me, that means less of a clear shot competition. ROTK should dominate come tomorrow morning.

And if the Academy isn't full of doddering old fools, with their own political agenda, then yes, Sean Astin should not only get the nod, but the hardware to back it up.

(did you know he had to audition for the next Leonardo DiCaprio movie, The Aviator (based on Howard Hughes) and he didn't get the part?) That sucks.

Oscar noms will be announced in a little over 10 hours. I'll be continuing my tradition of setting the timer for the nominations broadcast since I'll be out. I find it much more dramatic to watch the whole show rather than reading a list.
