The reason why it has got not very many techs is because not all critics awards do the techs, but it will win its big share of them. And there are still alot of awards that ROTK is nomed for a lot of awards in, but they havent announced their awards yet, so this list will get extremely bigger before the end.

Congratulations on pulling the all-nighter to bring us all the winners. The LA critics were real drama queens weren't they, releasing one winner at a time:rolleyes: . I have been over many lists of award nominees and some of the LA winners are people I haven't even heard mentioned before. It's a good sign that this critics circle, which obviously skews towards indie films, would give PJ best director.

RebelwithaCause
01-08-2004, 02:48 PM
Exactly....that is a big step for them, ya gotta admit. However, they couldn't go for the BP....not yet anyways. Ah well, at least we got 2 from them. I'm cool with that.

Glordreen
01-08-2004, 04:13 PM
Yeah. The Best Director win secures PJ's win at the Oscars, right now PJ is 100% lock for the win and ROTK is 95% lock for the BP win. The LAFCA's actually BP winner actually helped ROTK. since American Splendor wont get a nomination at the Oscars, and since Mystic River or anything else was snubbed out of everything, helping ROTK.

I've never heard of that organization, but hey, they like LOTR and Kill Bill, so I'm cool with them. Their noms are very cool to see as well....I mean, not only is Sean Astin and Uma nominated for acting, but they also threw in Alison Lohman and Will Ferrell...that cracks me up! Well, for Will Ferrell at least...but good to see some recognition for Alison Lohman. The songs are an odd catagory....The Steward of Gondor is there, and Into the West isn't....lol....but hey, Steward is one of my favorite tracks of the album, so that's fine by me. But then ya got like, for best animated feature, they nominated the anime sequence from Kill Bill. That's great, lol...that scene along was better than over half the animated films that came out this year.

I loved Kill Bill. Same here, that was my 2nd favorite film of the year. I swear, it is one of the most fun times I've ever had in a cinema, (LOTR movies beat it, because i'm entranced every time I watch them) and deserves everything it gets.

That's also great to see the Utah film critics hand out Supporting Actor to Sean Astin. Looks like our little hobbit is gaining speed, and deservedly so. Good for BP and BD...the more, the merrier. PS. Glordeen, the Chicago film Critics are announcing today? I didn't read that on OW.

Hey found this link to a bunch of fan musings over whether PJ should take best director at the Oscars:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/3324035.stm

Here are some (sorry I put so many, couldn't choose!) memorable ones:
Oscar? Is that all? Peter Jackson should be the first
President of New Zealand.

We must remember that nothing is certain about the
Academy Awards. If they can go to eminently
forgettable emphemera like Kramer v Kramer, Forrest
Gump and Chicago, they are highly unlikely to be
awarded to what is quite simply the best film ever
made.

Turning the trilogy into film was no mean feat, and
anyone with an appreciation of the scale of Tolkien's
work has to award some colossal credit to Jackson as
well.
Stuart, Turku, Finland

The Academy wouldn't know a good movie if one bit it
in the bum.
Leo Kelly, Auckland, NZ

These films are beyond Oscars. Thank you, Peter
Jackson, for creating this wonderful world in which
we've been living for the past two years
Adrian, Kassel, Germany

Absolutely, Peter Jackson's loving screen adaption of
some the world's finest fiction is a tribute to the
filmmaker's art. It's an outrage that neither of the
first two films garnered any awards for Jackson, as
they are among the most powerful directorial work I've
ever seen. Two thumbs up for Jackson, two thumbs down
for the Academy.
Jonathan, Victoria, Canada

This is the Gone with the Wind of 2001 to 2003. It may
not secure many Oscars however. That is the way of
things in Hollywood especially when the Americans are
going through a period of overly intense nationalism.
After all, neither Kubrick nor Hitchcock ever won an
Oscar for best picture or director and they too were
giants.
The films are the thing though. They are masterpieces
and make the whole world a happier and better place.
That, in the end, is what matters.
Dave Smith, Wellington, New Zealand

I hope he doesn't win - I think the films are way
superior to any Hollywood-generated drivel. Let's face
it, Oscars are all about the self-propagation of the
Hollywood machine with forgettable, repetitive films
winning each year. No, let Peter Jackson stand out
from that - we all know he's miles ahead of the US
crowd.
Caroline, London, UK

Very simple answer to this question. PJ should have
got an Oscar for the first and second movies. Not
being awarded them was a huge mistake. Not only that,
but Ian McKellen, Sean Astin and Viggo Mortenson also
deserve Oscars. If the Academy does not drown this
movie in awards in February it will have lost all
respect around the world. If they can give huge praise
to a mediocre acheivement like Titanic, how can they
possibly pass ROTK by?
James, Japan

If Peter Jackson as his hugely talented cast and crew
don't get some major recognition for their
achievements, I will be gobsmacked.
Mark Jones, Cambridge, England

If Jackson gets an award it will be in recognition of
his lifetime pursuit of quality film-making. After
all, he should have won an Oscar for Bad Taste, or
perhaps Braindead.
Dave L, London

If Jackson and Return of the King fail to win after that monstrosity of a picture Titanic picked up so many awards, then the Oscars will have lost all credibility.
Nick Wright, Munich, Germany

The Academy is renowned for Oscar injustices but hopefully The Lord of the Rings will buck the trend
Simon Dillon, South Tyneside

Of course he should win best director. Although the fact is he should have already won. The Academy is only against these films because they are fantasy genre, one it seems to constantly ignore. It will be purely political if he does win - much like the Denzil Washington/Judi Dench fiascos of the past. Compared to Fellowship of the Ring, was A Beautiful Mind really the better film , with the better director? I think not...
Andy Carslaw, Oxford

How the films have not received the number of Oscars they have deserved, God only knows. Peter Jackson has created films that appeal not only to fans of the books, but also to those who had never heard of Middle Earth. That is something very rare in book adaptations. The Trilogy should recieve many Oscars this time around.
Kate Harrison, New Mills, England

The BAFTA's (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) were moved from being a couple of weeks after the Academy Awards to being a couple of weeks before them last year. As the Oscars have been moved forward themselves this year, I'm not sure if the BAFTA'S will also have been moved forward, or pushed back until after the Oscars as before.

ha figured that....after all he starred in TWO movies that got nominated (but didn't win!;) ) and they called him "one of the finest actors of our time" before he came out to present the award to clint eastwood.

Here are the tallies for the awards. It shows how much the critics loved ROTK. In fact PJ got 80 votes as opposed to Eastwood's (in 2nd place) 17. It really makes up for PJ's loss for FOTR. If anyone remembered that, there were three nominees - PJ, Baz Luhrman, and Ron Howard. Two of them tied, making PJ the only loser.

I liked this live chat coverage thing we did, we should do it for the Globes and the Oscars, even the SAGs.

So I invite everyone out on Jan 25th and February 29th to this thread for a live covergae chat during the Globes and Oscars. The SAGs are sometime in February, Ill have to check.

Oh, I am so ticked! I thought that they were televised, but wasn't sure!!! And I had to leave at like 5 and hadn't checked back here! And they aren't gonna repeat it...I'm so bummed....ah well, so long as they mirror the speeches, I'll be fine. But what am I complaining about? Our movie won!!!!! Hell yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'll definetely be here for GG, SAG, and Oscars. I always watch those. SAG's are announced on Thursday, correct? Here's to hoping Sean gets a nom as well, since, not only he deserves it, but a nom here would really wake everyone else up. And the wins at the SAG's for acting are actually more important than the Globes, because the actors are voting, and they are the majority in the biz, so a win for him there would really help him out. Anyways, great news, (I would have liked Johnny Depp to have won, but Sean did do good....really, right now, Sean and Bill are in a dead heat...and basically, if they split the votes, Johnny might have a chance. Seriously, ya never know, because he just keeps gaining speed, whilst Ben Kingsley and his movie are sinking into the background...and the only reason Jude Law could get a nom is because of Miramax. I have heard nothing about his performance being that specacular. I'm sure that he did a great job, but like Nicole Kidman and Renee, I think that they just feel obligated to nom them. But anyways, ya, great job ROTK! You deserve it!!! Plus, if anyone happens to have mirrored them onto the internet, I'd love to see the acceptance speeches.

For starters, its going to be between Return of the King and Mystic River at the Academy Awards. I've seen both movies and I really think that Return of the King is much more dramatic and much more impacting film then Mystic River, although Mystic River is a good movie, I still think that Return of the King is the best film of the year. Heres what i predict what Return of the King will be nominated for and win:

Best Director (Its going to be between Peter Jackson and Clint Eastwood but Eastwood had already won his award, besides I think that PJ deserves Best Director for his unbelievable achievement with the Lord of the Rings trilogy.)

Best Picture (Its going to be between Return of the King and Mystic River, but i am really hoping for Return of the King!)

Best Supporting Actor- either Sean Astin or Benard Hill will be nominated but they also could be either nominated together or not at all. I hope one of them at least gets nominated.

Best Adapted Screenplay- They lost this one last time to A Beautiful Mind but perhaps they may get nominated and win this one unless Mystic River pulls this one out.

Best Cinematography- I really hope Return of the King gets nominated for this award and wins, the cinematography was just amazing to see.

Best Original Score- Howard Shore should get nominated for this one and win. The Return of the King is by far the best score of all three films.

Best Visual Effects- Weta will win this one, which will make it three years in a row.

Best Art Direction- Return of the King should get this one. With the work of Alan Lee, John Howe, Grant Major.

Best Make-up-ROTK will get nominated for this and hopefully win.

Best Costume Design-I think that ROTK will get nominated for this award and walk away with this one.

Best Film Editing-it will probably be between Mystic River and ROTK for best film editing. But for 3 hours and 20 mins, ROTK is superbly paced.

Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing-ROTK should get both nominations and should win both.

All in all, if Return of the King gets all these nominations, it wil be a grand total of 13 nominations. Out of all those, i will say up 9-10 nominations for Return of the King. Well see at the end of January.

Sean Astin and Andy Serkis are nom'd for Chicago...hehehe...great! Great news to hear! SAG noms are tommorrow people...start praying that ROTK and Sean Astin get noms!!! I'm serious...tonight, in bed, pray for the safety and care of those that you love...and then pray that those two get noms. It would be awesome...Ensemble I'm pretty sure they'll get, but Sean Astin HAS to get a SAG nom...he just really really deserves it....so come on people! Let's pray for, again, the safety of all that we care about, and all the good wonderful people on Earth, (as is what we should always do...) and then pray for this. Darn it anyways.....ah well, Chris Cooper deserved it more than Will Macy did, so that pleases me a bit. Nice to see Johnny on there, as well as Evan Rachel Wood. Master and Commander is really struggling now, Seabiscuit is back in the race, ROTK still is in the top of its form, Cold Mountain is dead, Station Agent got a major boost, and Mystic River is still doing very well. Anyways...it seems pretty hard to imagine Sean getting a nom now...I'll keep rooting for him...but now, i'm gonna start really pushing Picture and Director. ROTK had better win those, or, as you said Glordeen, the academy won't make it out of there alive.

Umm.. actually ROTK is the front-runner if you have been keeping up with the press. "Mystic River" won't win because it hasn't won enough precursors for it to be much of a threat to ROTK (ROTK has been practically sweeping the precursors), and it won't even come close to breaking $100 million at the box-office. The last movie to win best picture without breaking $100 million was "The English Patient" back in 1996, although its box-office would be well over $100 million today if you factored inflation in. If you want to factor inflation in, you would have to go way back to the 80s to find a best picture winner that didn't break $100 million in today's dollar value (that movie being 1987s "The Last Emperor"). The only way that "Mystic River" can defeat ROTK at the Oscars is if it wins not only the Golden Globe, but also the PGA, the DGA, and the BAFTAS. Also keep in mind that ROTK is part of a very much beloved trilogy of films that has been nominated twice for best picture, and the Academy is known for handing out makeup prizes. Clint Eastwood has already won best picture/director before, so they aren't going to be in any big hurry to give him another one so soon. All the other films this year are so weak that they can't even compete with ROTK, so ROTK is going to win this year by default.

ROTK won best picture this year when it took home the BFCA (aka Critics' Choice Award). Pretty much every movie for the past 4 years has won this award, so ROTK is sitting very pretty at the moment. Except for last year, every director that has won the Oscar for best director won the BFCA award, so now PJ has about a 100% chance of winning that one.

I haven't seen Seabiscuit but Cooper getting nominated for the second year in a row is slightly annoying, especially when fresh, deserving young talent like Astin are in the running. Whatever. Good to see Watanabe and Baldwin in supporting and Depp in the lead but where the heck is Scarlett Johannson in supporting actress? Marcia Gay Harden also got snubbed in supporting actress which might give Return of the King a better chance at the ensemble award.

I agree completely dude. See, Will Macy's part was just...bleh. How could you even nominate him for something that insignificant? I'm glad to see Cooper there, but he wasn't that extraordinary either...I would have been rooting for Jeff Bridges the most...he gave the best performance in that film. I'm glad Watanabe got the nom...he was great in his film...and I'm pleased to see Maria Bello get a nom too. I've liked her for some years now. Astin, however....really really really deserved a nom...and hopefully he'll get one for the Oscars at least. I'm estatic about Johnny Depp...the dude really really deserved that...I want to see him get nominated at the Oscars....him winning there would just be....oh...terrific. LOL. Well, I just like a little jolt, which is what I'm saying. I mean, Sean Penn and Tim Robbins were terrific, but I'd love to see Johnny split between the two and get the Oscar he's deserved for some years now. Murray, however, I really don't believe has earned it for anything in the past...(save for Rushmore, of course...) but Sean Penn has been a favorite of mine since I saw Fast Times...I'm angry at the snub of Scarlett Johanson and Marcia Gay Harden...the two I was really rooting for to get nom'd. Patricia Clarkson really must be loved among her peers...I liked her in Far From Heaven, as she did have a great role...but not enough to be nom'd. Close, because of her stunning change of character at the end, but almost there. Scarlett I've been admiring and watching since The Horse Whisperer, since she was the only thing keeping me awake in that film, and Marcia blew me away in Mystic River, as well as Tim Robbins. For me, they did the best jobs in the movie. Penn was very good, but not as good as many people have said he was. Bacon was very good, but lacked a killer moment...same with Fishburne, who really was an important role, but didn't have any big moments. Laura Linney was fantastic with what she had, and her change at the end just shocked the hell out of me. But Marcia Gay Harden is the one to really root for...she is the one in the movie who doesn't know what's going on...the one who's really trying to help...the one who cares about what's going on...and the one who is screwed over in the end, with heartbreaking reality. Anyways, some good ones in the bunch...but a few that really did not deserve to be left off.

Uma Thurman, also...really really deserved to be nom'd for Best Actress.

Depp definitely deserves an oscar nod as his performance made Pirates of the Caribbean, not to mention his consistently great work in past films. If he were to be nominated for an oscar it would be great for the academy to split the vote between Murray and Penn and have Depp come out the winner like Brody did last year. If Penn wins I'll be happy for him but his performance in Mystic cannot hold a candle to his past performances in Carlito's Way and Dead Man Walking where he completely disappeared into his character. I would also jump and cheer if Uma could possibly get an oscar nod. If the audience didn't care about the Bride then the showdown at House of Blue Leaves would not have had nearly as much impact and Uma made me care.

Return of the King related, nice to see it garnering another nom in the art direction guild. I really can't believe Lord of the Rings has yet to win the oscar for art direction. Really cool to see Last Samurai there as that Samurai village was a work of art. Also Kill Bill featuring one of the greatest action set-pieces ever in the House of Blue Leaves and the absolutely beautiful landscape during the Bride and O-Ren fight. But the immense detail and sheer brilliance of Minas Tirith alone should prove to be unbeatable this year.

Just for the sheer fun of it: This is an excerpt of a so-called original ROTK EE-script (Yeah! Right, dude!!!) that depicts the MoS confrontation. And of course they got it from "that message board" which again got it from "that other message board"... you get the idea! :D Some people will believe everything they read!

C. Lee had no lines in ROTK and did not amake a single appearence also, therefore he is not on the castlist, what dont you understand about that. Its like saying Harrison Ford should be on the castlist of Attack of the Clones.

Nicole Kidman is not going to be nominated, she didnt get a SAG nom nor a BAFTA nom nor a BFCA nom. Cold Mountain is starting to look like it will not even be nomed for BP, since it failed to get a SAG Ensemble nom and a DGA nom. Cold Mountain is dead, completely dead. I saw that. Very very cool to read that!!!

BTW, I saw Cold Mountain this afternoon. In my opinion...excellent. This movie may be Miramax's ***** transport, but the movie...is awesome. I mean, its not like Chicago or A Beautiful Mind the last two years....those were undeserving. This film deserves a nom. It is, however, a long long way off from beating ROTK however. But it does deserve more noms than Seabiscuit, which was fair, and Mystic River, which was good, but overhyped. This film surprised me, and was an excellent one at that. Still, doesn't compare to Kill Bill, and doesn't even come close...not a microscope, to ROTK.

The biggest problem with Cold Mountain is that it is Miramax and Harvey hates to lose which is why he is pulling all the stops out for it.

It is "Oscar to order" if you like - American story, American stereotypes (nothing against Americans I am just enforcing my point before I get bashed) two previous Oscar winners and an Oscar winning director - it has "Oscar" written all over it.

I said from the start "that CM would give ROTK it's biggest" challenge and I think I'll be proved right.

It also proves if it wins that Harv has the Academy his pocket and they might as well start calling them the Miramax awards.

ABM and Chigacag both won the last two years and even though ABM is a good film it paled compared to FOTR and Chicago was a "film version of a stageshow" hardly groundbreaking" they've been doing that for years. It just proves the "Harv factor"

Oh and the ONLY reason CM got 13 noms at the BAFTA's was because for some tenuous reason it is down as a Best British film nom and the only reason that is is that it is Anthony Minghella's Production company, even though it is financed by an American one and written about the American Cilvil War based on an American author's book. ROTK cannot be nommed in this category so I don't care about the 13 nom beating 12. If I was to be really pedantic then the "Orange Film of the Year" which is voted for by the british public out of 10 films does not even have Cold Mountain as a nomine but ROTK is in that list - so that's 13 possible awards it could win on the night as well. On a happier note FOTR won it two years ago and TTT won it last year so I think it's probably a safe bet that ROTK should win it this year, but I expect it's nearest contender will be Pirates of the Caribbean and that wouldn't be a bad way to lose out, but somehow I think that one's in the bag.

I have never seen such domination during any oscar season, than what ROTK is doing this year. It is simply amazing. Damn right to, finally LOTR is getting the justice it deserves.

I thought there was a new rule saying a score has to be completely original to be nominated which would rule out ROTK since it uses some themes from the other movies?

Otherwise, I agree with Rogue Program. I have a sinking feeling, though, that the Academy will ignore all the other noms/wins it's received.

New Line recently stated that Howard Shore's score is elligible for the oscar and it was apparently elligible last year as well. I am optimistic that it will get these nominations and this is the year that Lord of the Rings finally gets its due.

That's no big surprise. Although most of the actors give good performances, you have to admit that the films were never really intended to be an actor's showcase.

I thought those were announced last week? Or do you mean a diffferent awards group? Anywho, I'm glad for them winning Chicago's film award. As of now, I do not think that Sean will get a nom, but I am hoping for it...However, Tim Robbins did deserve to be nominated, and his work in Mystic River was brilliant. It would be nice to see him win. My wishes for the wins for the groups, personally, would be to see Johnny win for Pirates, Uma for Kill Bill, Sean for ROTK, and Marcia Gay Harden for Mystic River or Scarlet Johanson for LIT, (haven't seen her yet, but I like her as an actress.) Those are my wishes...do they all deserve it? Well...not sure about Scarlet just yet, and I haven't seen Charlize in Monster...but I'm still rooting for Uma just a tad over Diane Keaton, who was awesome in SGG. Marcia Gay Harden, for me, WAS better than Renee Zellwegger, and Sean Astin gave one of the best performances of the year. It might be a mixture of the character, and it might just be the hype of everything, because I'm still debating that last comment. I loved his performance, and for me, it is one of the best performances of the year...but I don't atually know about one of the best of all time. Might be a bit of an overstatement, but in the supporting actor catagory, he deserves to win. I know that at least...he deserves to win that. I haven't seen LIT yet, so I can't comment on Bill Murray, but I would love for them to split the vote and have Johnny win. His performance is the best this year by an actor in a leading role...he's on par with Sean Astin right now for me. Uma had a huge array of emotion that she had to convey, and did everything so that you did not doubt for one second that she wouldn't kick a$$ at the house of blue leaves. And Marcia Gay Harden brought her character to startling life...just amazing right there.

He's just late. It is the SAG, same stuff as last week.

Anyway, if (when) ROTK wins the DGA and SAGs then it should have no problem getting BP. It would have support from the Producers, Actors, and Directors. It should also win the Globes this Sunday.

CAS Awards Nominees for "Outstanding Sound Mixing for Motion Pictures" are

The Last Samurai
The Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Seabiscuit

This is ROTK's 11th Guild nomination. It could possibly be the only movie in history to get a nod at every guild, with a WGA nod tomorrow and that is looking good.
