Freddy Adu brought into the MLS USA...What do you think?

What's your opinion on this? I read about it today and thought it was truly a crock of crap, particularly when the head of the organization said that "the European clubs wouldn't have cared about him as much as we do."

You'll have to forgive me, but coming from an island that was settled by two European nations, Holland and France, and growing up on European and Latin football, I dislike the MLS in a major way. But I digress.

What is your opinion of this signing? He is reportedly going to be the highest paid player in the MLS, and all at only 14 years old! Once again the head said that the European clubs wouldnt have allowed him to play in any club matches until he was 16 or 18, according to FIFA regulations. But I think that is a good strategy. After all, why thrust him into play with grown men when he is really just a kid? If he's such a phenom, why not let him take part in the youth matches and develop his skills even more?

I think that the US national team believes that this phenom gives them international respect and allure...when really and truly, in my eyes, it doesn't. lol

I hadn't heard about it before. They probably wanted to get themselves on the spotlight by hiring a 14 year old. Hell, I know I want to see him play...

nobody watches the MLS... id rather him go play against some better competition in Europe... soccer (football) is a lot bigger over there than here in the US... and he would find better competition over in Europe.

I agree with Tonkpils, in my opinion, he would find better competition and would be treated like a relative prince in Europe. Beckham makes money that I wouldn't be able to dream of. Look at the battle for him between Manchester and Real. Or when Patrick Kluivert left Holland for another club. Beckham himself is the Michael Jordan of European football, in terms of making money.

But do you realize that he is 14 years old... coming to a country where Soccer (Football) isnt big at ALL... and this 1 million dollars is ONLY from Nike... thats ONE sponser, hes getting PLENTY from the MLS to play over here or else he wouldnt be over here most likely. You cant really expect the kid to just come over to the US out of pretty much nowhere and make 10, 20, 30 million from Nike? Nike isnt crazy... Nike knows what the market is here in the US and there is not much of a market for Soccer... so thats a very smart move by Nike IMO.

Anyway, the reason he didn't sign with a team like Manchester United, is that over in Europe the complicated rules might end up making him play on a 17 and under team. If he stays and plays for MLS he can play whenever D.C United thinks he's ready.

One problem: NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE MLS IN AMERICA! The only time Americans pay attention to soccer is when they have to ship their kids around on Saturdays and when we're playing the Olympics and/or World Cup...
