I'm constantly surprised by the number of people who don't even bother to read the books. That's where it's real. The books are far better than the movie, as cool as the films are.
Pure JRR Tolkein.
I saw the first film, and then went and read the TT before it came out. I didn't get to finish it, though, and stopped right before the Shelob part...so good thing they cut it there! :D

I have read it 3 times so far. I HAD to read it shortly after the movie came out because I thought fo sure Frodo died in the end. It was his reaction when Gimli tried to "destroy" the ring at the council of Elrond that made me think that. I think the true ending was just as bad, I was relieved the Frodo hadnt died, but sobbing like a baby. I hate goodbye's. Of course I read it immediatly after I finished it the first time just to see what i had missed in my hurry to finish it the first time.

I read the trilogy once a year around Christmas time.....been doin so for too many years to remember (i'm only 22.....so maybe 5 or 6 times). Each time I read them, I get more and more out of them. I imagine I'll probably still be reading them when I'm 80.

4 times..The Hobbit twice and the Silmarillion twice...
anyway...i do not agree that the book is better than the movies...they are good in their own ways...the books concentrate on the culture of the ppl of ME..as well as the history and mythical side of ME...but the movies adds excitement and power...:)

I've read The Hobbit once, LOTR (as in all three) 2x, FOTR 2x, TTT 3x, ROTK 6x (give or take), and The Silmarillion once. I'm planning on pulling a Christopher Lee and reading all three volumes once every year (at least).

I have read the books a couple of times during the "film era". I also read the books when I was younger but kind of left them on the shelf for a few years until PJ rekindled my interest in them.
I think I have said before that I would rather watch the FOTR film than read the FOTR book. However, I am sure TTT and ROTK have better books than the films.

I recieved the book on my birthday on July of 2001. I read the FOTR in July, TTT in August and ROTK in September. So when the first movie came out I could compare them easily.
Then in the year 2002 I read the trilogy again to compare the second movie. I just finished reading the trilogy again last month to see the difference in the third film.
I still haven't really read the appendices yet, so I should really start reading them.

i read it once but the whole thing with the hobbit and the appendices and everything else
... i definitely enjoy the movies better then the books .. unlike harry potter where the books are way better here i actually think the movies are better ...
I read them all after the first movie came out. I completely forgot everything that happened though, except for the part when Frodo's on Mount Doom.

i was required to read the LOTR trilogy in English 11, about 4 years ago, and to be honest i really was not looking forward to reading it. i was like 3 books, thats alot of reading. but as soon as the story got going in the fellowship, when Gandalf discovered the ring of power, i was into it and could not put it down. but as soon as the movies came out, being a much bigger movie fan, i got way more into it. i prefer the movies over the books myself, but im not a big fan of reading so im biased. im a much bigger movie fan then a book fan.
im a bigger fan of Peter Jackson's work. i really liked Heavenly Creatures and the Frighteners with Michael j Fox.

I've read the trilogie only twice ...
The first time was before the movie, and as i didn't want to be "influenced" by the movie, I read it very fast (i read Rotk in 2 weeks, and finished it one week before the movie arriving).
I wanted to read it again now, but i don't want to be stopped by the movie (i'll not be able to finish the trilogy before Rotk movie), so I'm going to wait a little ...
And then i've read Bilbo and the silmarillon, and lot of appendices, but only once ...
And this book has change my point of vue on my life ...
Hope you have understood, and bye !!!!!

I can't agree with you because JRR tolkien spent too many years of his life creating this. There is so much time and effort put into these books (he created entire languages for god sakes). So, no matter how much i love the movies, and i really do, i can't say that they are better than the books...how about equal??! ;)
I've read the Trilogy plus The Hobbit once each. I'm hoping to get a chance to read them again sometime in the next couple of months.

Yep. I have read the whole trilogy all together probably about 5 times and the Hobbit twice.
I read the books in the summer 2001 because I wanted to read them before the movie came out. Then I read them again right after FOTR was released

Hobbit = 5 times
LOTR = 16 2/3 (just started ROTK)
Silmarillion = 4 times
If you haven't read the books you're missing out, althought PJ has done a terrific job with the story thus far. I wasn't that big on FOTR TC when it came out, but after the EE it has basically replaced what pictures I had had for the characters and the locations. I'm a fan of both the books and the movies.

OMG *dances up and down* I figured out what your connection is! You ARE Christopher Lee! It all makes sense now, the pieces are falling into place. Why didn't you tell us? SOO mean.
For the silly ducks who don't realize why I wrote that- Christopher Lee frequently mentions how he does the same thing Jedi said he does.

Ive only read lotr 3 times, the Hobbit once, Silmarillion once, Lost Tales once. I havent read the books about Tolkien, even though he's a genius i'm not too interested about him. I dont think you have to read LOTR heaps and heaps of times to be a genius on it, its about understanding. So i dont know what the point of gloating about it is. Just shows you aint got a life.

No, Sonny, LOL it ain't about just how you are the first time you do something, it's about how you've changed and grown since the last time you did something--You constantly grow and change, if you're organic, and I hope you are. Therefore over the last 36 years since I first read LOTR, as I've grown and changed, I look, see, and understand in ways I could not imagine when I was a little Tyke of 17, or 23

I couldn't stand not knowing what happens in ROTK so I started reading the trilogy. I read FOTR just after I watched the movie, same with TTT but weakness on my part meant I had to read ROTK early. I am currently up to <span style="background-color: #000000">"Scouring of the Shire"</span> so I'm almost there.
