The actor, who plays unlikely Hobbit hero FRODO BAGGINS in the epic films, was left sobbing in the cinema when director PETER JACKSON showed his cast the final hour of the film this summer (03).
And he hopes he never has to sit through the experience again.
He says, "I've never cried so intensely in a movie theatre before. It's really shocking. I think fans of the book know how emotional it's going to be, but I don't think there's anything that can really prepare you for what the last hour of this movie is going to do.

"It's pretty relentless. It wrecked me, and I was in it. I was sobbing. There's a couple of moments when ARAGORN is made king - a moment between Aragorn and the Hobbits that I can't really go into detail about, but it is incredibly emotional.
"There's also a scene at the end of the movie where the Hobbits say goodbye to each other, and f***, that's hard to watch. It's so sad because I can actually see myself saying goodbye to my friends."

This is a transcription of a section of dialogue from the Two Towers Extended Edition, courtesy of Ringer Spy Faid. It contains a pivotal conversation between Faramir, Boromir and Denethor at Osgiliath.
Sons of the Steward
Boromir: This city was once the jewel of our kingdom. A place of light, and beauty, and music. And so it shall be once more!
*Cheers*
Boromir: Let the armies of Mordor know this: Never again will the land of my people fall into enemy hands!
*Cheers*
Boromir: This city, of Osgiliath, has been reclaimed for Gondor!
*Cue Trailer Music/EE Preview Score*
Boromir: For Gondor! For Gondor!
Faramir: Good speech. Nice and short.
Boromir: Leaves more time for drinking!
*Laughing*
Boromir: Break out the ale! These men are thirsty!
Men: Hurray!
Boromir: Remember today little brother. Today, life is good!
Faramir looks away from Boromir.
Boromir: What?
Faramir: He is here.
Shows Denethor surrounded by troops.
Denethor: Well done men.
Boromir: In our moment of peace, can he not give us that?
Denethor: Where is he? Where is Gondor's finest? Where is my first born?
Boromir: Father.
Boromir and Denethor embrace.
Denethor: They say you vanquished the enemy almost single handed.
Boromir: They exagerrate! The victory belongs to Faramir also!
Denethor: But for Faramir this city would still be standing. Were you not entrusted to protect it?
Faramir: I would have done but our numbers were too few.
Denethor: All too few. You let the enemy walk in and take it on a whim. Only you cast a poor reflection on me.
Faramir: That is not my intent.
Boromir whispers to Denethor
Boromir: You give him no credit and yet he tries to do your will.
Denethor and Boromir move to the next room
Boromir: He loves you father.
Denethor: Do not trouble me with Faramir, I know his uses and they are few. We have more urgent things to speak of. Elrond of Rivendell has called a meeting. He will not say why, but I have guessed its purpose. It is rumored that the weapon of the enemy has been found.
Boromir: The one ring. Isildur's Bane.
Denethor: And it has fallen into the hand of the elves. Everyone will try to claim it. Men, Dwarves, Wizards. We cannot let that happen. This thing MUST come to Gondor.
Boromir: Gondor?
Denethor: It is dangerous, I know. Ever the ring will seek to corrupt the hearts of lesser men. But YOU! You are strong! And our need is great. It is OUR blood which has been spilt. OUR people who are dying. Sauron is biding his time. He is massing fresh armies. He will return. And when he does, we will be powerless to stop him. YOU MUST GO. Bring me back this mighty gift.
Boromir: Noo. My place is here with my people. Not in Rivendell!
Denethor: Would you deny your own father?
Faramir: There is need to go to Rivendell? Send me in his stead.
Denethor: You? Ha, oh I see. A chance for Faramir, Captain of Gondor, to show his quality. I think not. I trust this mission only to your brother. The one who will not fail me.
Boromir gazes up at the White Flag of Gondor.
Boromir: Remember today, little brother.
Boromir rides off on horseback.

Here are some major ROTK dialogue spoilers from TORN:
HavenSpy Strider compiled this amazing overview of spoilers from EA's Return of the King game. And although a game is not a movie - and there could be some variation in the film - these make very interesting reading indeed! This first lot is just for Aragorn and Frodo, expect more soon!
As Gimli:
1. Saruman's Death
Saruman does his talk with Theoden/Company. Then Theoden says something to Wormtongue and Saruman says to Worm that he killed Theodred by putting poison in his food.
Saruman:"And you always do exactly as I say, don't you Worm?"
Worm: "Nooooooo!"
Then we see Saruman fall of of Orthanc and die.
2. The Visit of Elrond In Dunharrow, before they go to the Paths of the Dead, Elrond talks to Aragorn.
Elrond: "Your Path does not lie with the others, Aragorn. The man who wields the power of Isildur's sword can summon an army more deadly than anything that walks the earth...every path you have trod, through wilderness, through war, has led you to this road."
Aragorn: "So be it, I will visit these Paths of the Dead"
3. Encounter with the King of the Dead After fighting many shades (floating, blue, and transparent warriors, and some skeletons), Aragorn has this conversation with the King of the Dead...
King: "Who enters my domain???"
Aragorn: "One who would hold you to your oath"
King: "The Dead do not suffer the living to pass!" (more shades appear and fight)
Aragorn: "You will suffer me!"
King: "Brave fool! Let the abyss take you!" (many skeletons appear)
Aragorn: "I will defeat your warriors, then come for you!" (fight with the skeletons)
Aragorn: "I summon you to fulfill your oath!"
King: None but the King of Gondor may command me!
Aragorn: Then I command you, for I am Isildur's heir.
Afterwards, the company takes a shortcut through the White Mountains to the Corsairs of Umbar. They capture their ships and with the help of the Dead, defeat the orcs at the Minas Tirith docks.
At the gates of Mordor, Gimli fights the Mouth of Sauron (prob. just a game adaption And that is it for Gimli.
As Frodo:
Gollum: "Nassty Hobbittsess. Wicked, tricksey, false. She is hungry, perhaps they could appease her appetite."
Sam: "Frodo! I heard it from his own mouth...he means to murder us!
Gollum: "Never! Smeagol wouldn't hurt a fly! He's a fat, horrid Hobbit, who hates Smeagol, who makes up nasssty lies."
Sam: "You miserable little maggot! I'm going to stove your head in!"
Frodo: "Leave him alone! If you scare him off, we are lost."
Sam: "You don't see it, he's leading us into a trap! Gandalf would not have chosen this way."
Frodo: "Gandalf is gone, come, Smeagol, show us the way.
Later on the stairs of Cirith Ungol ...
Gollum: "Clever Hobbitses to climb so high. Very clever Hobbitses. Only a few more stairs to go before we reach the top"
Sam: (to Gollum) "What are we up to? Sneaking off, are we?"
Gollum: "Sneaking? Fat Hobbit is always so polite. Smeagol shows them secret ways that nobody else could find and they say "sneak", "Sneak!" Very nice friends, oh yes, my precious, very nice."
Sam: "Alright, alright. You startled me was all. What were you doing?"
Gollum: "Sneaking"
Later on...
Sam: "Mr. Frodo?"
Frodo: "I'm alright." Sam: You are not alright! You're exausted! It's that Gollum, it's this place, it's that thing around your neck. Let me help you with it...I could carry it for awhile."
Frodo: "Get away from me!"
Sam: "I don't want to keep it,...I just want to help!"
Gollum: "See! See! He wants it for himself!
Frodo: "No...It's you, Sam. You can't help me anymore. I'm sorry, Sam. Go home.
Sam: "But...Gollum's a liar...he's poisened you against me.
Frodo: "Go home!" Sam leaves the screen while Frodo and Gollum continue on.
Later Frodo enters Shelob's lair.
Frodo: "Smeagol? What was that? Smeagol? Sees Sheolob
Frodo: "Sam! Sam!" runs out of the lair Shelob ambushes him, and stings him.
Sam comes to the rescue and beats Shelob. Two orcs take Frodo and Sam promises to rescue him. I did notice the watchers, but nothing special happened. Sam goes to the tower and finds the two orcs fighting (forgot their names), kills them and resues Frodo. Asks again if he can help with the ring, and is refused.
At Mount Doom...
Sam: "Frodo! Destroy it, now, do it! Throw it in the fire!"
Frodo: "I have made my choice. I will not destroy it...the Ring is mine.
Gollum: "Precious! My Precious! Filthy Baggins!"
Frodo: "Nooooo!"
Gollum fights Sam, Frodo puts on the ring, fights with Gollum, Gollum takes the ring and falls into the Crack of Doom.
Frodo: "Sam! It's gone...it is done."
Sam: "Yes, Mr. Frodo. It's over now."
Frodo: "I'm glad to be here with you Samwise Gamgee...here at the end of all things."
Then two eagles fly to them, and that is the end.
More to come from Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Eowyn!

I still find it funny when I think of Gimli fighting the Mouth of Sauron. :D
SPOILERS!!!
Incidentally, in the ROTK Visual Companion, Jude Fisher states that the Mouth of Sauron appears at the Black Gates with Frodo's stolen Mithril vest, which the MoS uses to "prove" that the Ring Bearer has been imprisoned and/or killed.
However, if this was to work cinematically for the audience, then we surely mustn't have seen The Tower of Cirith Ungol sequence at that stage - since otherwise we will know that the MoS is bluffing.
I would have thought that by the time Aragorn and co. reach the Black Gates, the Ring Bearer (whomever that is at this stage ;)) would be somewhere very close to Mount Doom, in which case there would be no point in the MoS revealing the Mithril vest for fear of redundancy.
Anyone else think that the Visual Companion has got the timing all wrong?

No, that's exactly what happens in the books! The only reason that there is any uncertainty as to Frodo's fate in the book is the fact that after Shelob's Lair and the Choices of Master Samwise, Tolkien devotes all the following chapters to Aragorn, Gandalf and co's storylines all the way up to the final moments at the Black Gates. He then goes back to telling in essence the entire Frodo and Sam storyline.
In a film you can't really do that, and I think the inter-cutting technique used by PJ in TTT is the best way to edit the story together. There won't therefore be a 'is he captured/dead' question in the audiences minds, however -
1. The audience will have that moment of doubt after Shelob's Lair when Frodo is taken of the the tower of Cirith Ungol,
2. The audience will see Gandalf and co's despair but be 'in on it'
3. The reader never really thinks that Frodo has been captured and will not somehow make it to Mount Doom, do they?
Mr. Frodo

yeah we aren't meant to think frodo is dead, Aragorn and Co are.

Thoeden's death, Eowyn's "death", Frodo hugging Sam in Cirith Ungol after being rescued, Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom, Sam's lines when Frodo "Died", when Frodo and Sam sits upon the side of Mount Doom waiting for death to come, Frodo and Sam meeting the rest of the fellowship, The goodbyes, Grey Haven

What we have: Fellowship TE, Fellowship EE, Two Towers TE
What we dont have: Two Towers EE, Return of the King TE, Return of the King EE
So if you look at it that way we're only half done.
When I have watched the ROTK EE, then I will truly say that its over. But I do agree when I come out of the theater on Dec 17. It wil feel like the end. ::waa: :waa: :waa:

I actually love the idea of Gimli fighting MoS. Because all he's been is comic relief while Legolas gets to do all the cool stuff. Back on topic. So what parts in FOTR and TTT made you cry/teary eyed and what pats do you think will make in cry/teary eyed in ROTK.
For me
FOTR - Gandalfs death in Moria, and Boromoirs death. Bothe made me teary eyed and a few drops fell.
TTT - Mostly the death of Haldir and when Theoden is crying over the death of Theodred. I never really got teary eyed, maybe a little. But I do not easily get teary eyed in movies.
possiblities in ROTK - The death of Theoden, When Sam carries Frodo up Mount Doom, The Grey Havens, the end. there are some others but those are the main ones.
I wont be surprised if I see many tears streaming down my face.

When Gandalf fell off the bridge...Esp the scene after that when frodo shouts............NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!
Boromir's death
The very last scene...when the 2 hobbits climbs down the slope
TTT
When Theoden cried...
When sam said,'Its yr sam...'
When gandalf rides down the slope to helm's deep's rescue..

I know when I first saw FOTR that even though I KNEW what happened to Gandalf, I couldn't help but get misty. Especially after having the dark scenery and then going out into the daylight and the Mirromere trickling down. (It also made me have to pee, but it was a good bathroom break part of the movie anyways.)
Also the scene where Frodo stands alone on the beach deciding what to do is a very emotional scene.
I didn't get emotional for TTT... it wasn't meant to be a tear-jerking kinda film. But I remember choking up a bit when Theoden stands over his son's grave.
BTW, Spy Games sucked. But to each his own!

When Theoden and Aragorn and Co. rode out of Helm's Deep and then Gandalf and Eomer appeared, that whole sequence sent shivers up and down my spine. I think it sucked when they cut it off for the Isengard scene, but that scene ALSO sent shivers up my spine. Not saying I hated the scene, just wish the Gandalf part of Helm's Deep would have lasted longer.
Also, Treebeards' little speech before the Ents march to war, and then the actual march with the music, was spine-tingling.
I didn't get teary-eyed for any of it though. But it got the adrenaline pumping. And I remember the overall reaction of the theater was just excitement and then a collective sigh once it was over. Truly a great moment in the movie. And whenever we play TTT at my work (Suncoast) I always pause with whatever I'm doing to watch that sequence. :)

FOTR:
I was a total LOTR virgin, so I got teary at many things - the beautiful scenery, the score. I actually had tears streaming down my face at Gandalf's fall, Boromir's death, and the breaking of the fellowship.
TTT:
Even though I hadn't read the book at this stage, not much had me actually teary. When Aragorn finds Pippin's brooch and when Sam tackles Frodo at the end were the two moments that did it. Someone said TTT was more of an adrenaline rush - I felt that way exactly! Very spine-tingling moments were all at the end, most especially Gandalf's ride down the cliff to Helm's Deep, with that vocalist in the background. I still get chills from it.
ROTK:
I've read half of it, and I know generally what happens in the second half, so I know I'll be bawling all the way through the movie.

I had not yet read the books when the fotr come out so I had no idea Gandalf came back, so I was in full blown tears (I can get very emotional.) I cried when Boromir died and my tears didn't leave even when the credits started, that whole ending was a tear sequence.
TT:
Of course, I cried when Theoden did, I cried when Haldir fell (I had read the books by now btw.) Sam's speech got me very emotional I had tears of happiness and sadness, "Its me! Your Sam! Don't you know your Sam?" =(
ROTK:
Most definetly the whole sequence with Theoden's death, including the stuff with Merry, Eowyn, and Eomer. I might when Sam thinks Frodo was killed my Shelob, depending on how they handle it and well lets just say for one whole half of the movie tears may be flowing freely :waa: I am not afraid to admit it! lol

I didn't cry at all during TTT, although I *almost* did when Gandalf fell in FOTR. ;)

whenever i watch FOTR i always start crying when gandalf falls, sometimes when boromir dies, and always when sam is drowning and then frodo pulls him up and sam says his whole "i made a promise" speech, but i didn't really cry the first time i saw it...i was just in awe the whole time
i never really cried in TTT, but i've never felt so relieved when sam says his whole speech at the end...i totally identified with everything in the movie i felt like i had gone through that huge journey with them....that was a cool feeling
i know i'll cry a bunch in ROTK...i'm such a sap...i actually got teary-eyed when i watched the trailer....i'm just gonna be sobbing the whole way through
For some reason, before Gandalf falls, when He says "Fly, you fools" The first word is hard to make out, does not sound like fly to me. I had to watch it with the captons to make it out.

At first I thought he said "Run you fools", but then I clearly heard say "Fly you fools" the next time around.

why does everyone cry at gandalf's "death" in FOTR. although i cried at neither (even though they were well-done, and very emotional), boromir's death seemed as if it was much sadder, and the music, in my opinion, seemed to go with the fact that boromir was going to die much more than in gandalfs scene. I just thought it was strange that "everyone" seemed to feel that gandalf's scene was emotional, and only a portion of you found boromir's emotional.

i for one, didn't cry at either point. i agree about the music at boromir's death. i think the reason people were sadder about Gandalf dying was that we knew him much better as a character, andhad grown to like him, whereas we recently met Boromir, and during that time he was becoming more currupted by the ring, whereas Gandalf, having been in the presence of the ring for longer, still was his cheeyr old self

When I saw the ROTK preview on the TTT disc, I had chills through most of it. Especially when they wee talking about the deeper meanings. I had a huge sigh at the end (I wasn't going to cry, I was just so into it that once it was over I felt suddenly that December 17th was so far away).
The TTT EE preview on the disc did just what TTT did for me--get the adrenaline pumping. Especially with that music from the Gandalf-Balrog fall in Moria.
I teared up with Boromir too, just didn't mention that. It's especially Legolas's reaction to it. Also his final words is like a wrench in my throat "I would follow you to the end. My brother, my captain, my king."
Man! I'm sorta choking up just thinking about it!
THAT'S IT, I GOTTA WATCH FOTR EE!!!!!!!!!!!

TTT: Sams Speech, Sams Speech, Sams Speech. http://www.audiblebeauty.net/rings/towers/samspeechentire.mp3
"Don't you know your Sam?"
Théoden crying
And Elronds VoiceOver-Arwen Thing. ("If Aragorn survives this war, You will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated and Aragorn made king and all that you hoped for comes true... you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you.
No comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death. An image of the splendor of the kings of men in glory, undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt. As night falling winter has come without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to you grief, under the fading trees, until all the world has changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent. Arwen... there is nothing for you here, only death.")

That it such a great scene...the one with Elrond and Arwen.

I agree, there are people who complain about those scenes because "they weren't in the book", well I say they can piss off. They are great scenes, I always wished Arwen had more speaking parts in the book and the movie basically brings it to life. :) They are in the appendices anyway.

Exactly.
I just think that scene was done brilliantly, I think is amazing the a person(Jackson) and his team can show something like that on film, that scene is something out of a dream, its incredible, IMO.
It moved me.

"Not in the books" ?
Now wait a minute, the Elrond-VoiceOver-Lines ar almost completely out of the appendix.
ILOVEKATIE
11-15-2003, 07:16 PM
Thats what Necross said, its not actually in the book, but in the appendix, which is part of the book itself.
Necross

Sorry I wasn't clear enough, but ILOVEKATIE is right. There are people who don't consider it important because it was in the appendix, but thats a bunch of crap. If it wasn't important Tolkien wouldn't have bothered writing it in the first place.
heck, I cried when I read the books. I already know I'm gonna be sobbing big time at the end of this movie

I've been very emotional during the first two.. but never cried..
I've got the feeling ROTK will push me over the edge though :P
What a great marketing idea, aswell as the usual LOTR popcorn containers they could also sell LOTR ROTK boxes of tissues on the cinemas they would make a fortune lol!!!
