"A palantir is a dangerous tool, the lost seeing stones."
"Why? Why should we fear to use them?"
"You do not know who else may be watching."
It's a seeing-stone. There were 7 brought by Elendil from Numenor and they're sort of like Middle-Earth phones. It's how Saruman connects with Sauron.

The PALANTIR is one of the seeing stones. The Palantir of this story is the one Saruman the white has, you may remember it from FOTR and TTT films where Saruman is contacting Sauron

and if you were wondering, Sauron got the palantir he use from Minas Ithil when his forces conquered it, in 2002 of the third age. there is one in Orthanc, Barad-dur Minas Tirith. there was one in Amon-Sul (weathertop), was also one in Osgiliath. can't remember where the other 2 were, but i know that one of them was lost at sea

A well though out response, however it is not needed. Everyone else had a decent answer except for you. Why the need to troll?
