Well, now that "The Lord of the Rings" is coming to an end in a month and a half, what other fantasy novel/series would you like to see made into a movie that hasn't already been announced?
Me, I'm not sure since I haven't read many fantasy novels besides "Lord of the Rings," but I wouldn't mind seeing Terry Brooks' "The Sword of Shannara" made into a movie.

A brilliant book that would make and excellent fantasy film. My #2 favorite book of all time (behind LOTR).

The Last Unicorn is being made into a movie. It comes out next Christmas, and stars Christopher Lee and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

Unfortunately the books I'd love to see would make waaaaaay to many movies for their fanbase.
The Belgariad and Malloreon by David and Leigh Eddings.... heck even the Elenium and Tamuli would be ok they're almost the same book ;) 10 books for the first two 6 for the second two.
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin... these would probobly take 2 movies per book to really get everything in there it's so complex.
Incarnations of Immortality 7 books.

Less of a fantasy, but I'd like to see The Phantom Tollbooth (re)made into a live-action/CGI combination, and I'd like to see the film be closer to the book.
Hitchhiker's Guide is sci-fi fantasy, but it's coming...
Not a novel, but the Battle Chasers comics would make an awesome flick, if they did it right (though admittedly I have little faith in that).

I'd love to see the Riftwar and Serpentwar Sagas by Raymond E Fiest on film. He's created such a vivid world (much like Tolkien) that it be so easy since all your material is right there in the books. But then that'd be at least 7 movies if they didn't include what happened in 'Prince of the Blood' and the 'King's Buccaneer'.
I'd also truly love to see the Song of Albion trilogy by Stephen Lawhead. I don't think I've ever seen a Celtic fantasy before. Braveheart is about as close as it gets, but this series is something else entirely.
Yep, definately love to see those on film :)

Heroe's Die by Matthew Stover(done right...it could rock)
DragonLance by Hickman and Weiss
Sword of Shamnarra by Brooks
Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series would be great movies, but I'd see them more in a mini-series format. It'd take at least 13-15 hours just to get The Game of Thrones right. It'd be awesome to see though. Come on Sci-Fi Channel! There's something worth your efforts.
The Dark Tower series would be better transitioned to a movie length. That'd also be awesome.

How has no one mentioned Narnia? Or Prydain? Or the other thirteen Oz books, for that matter?
I'd love to see someone tackle Elric, The Dark is Rising sequence. . . or Discworld!

I thought it was Anita Blake?
All of these are great suggestions, esp The Last Unicorn. :D
I also think The Death Gate Cycle, by Weis and Hickman would be good.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series, especially since it's the best-selling fantasy series since Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."

Yeah, of course "The Dark Tower" is fantasy. Stephen King even wrote that he was inspired to write "The Dark Tower" because of his love for Tolkien's books.

I'd like them to do the "The Wheel Of Time" series. Unfortunately the would totaly destroy it, or they would have to make like 12 movies to do it right.
And I would love to see them do "The Dark Elf Trilogy" by R.A. Salvatore. Jeremy Irons as a dark elf would just kick ass. But after the last D&D movie, I doubt this will happen.

Dark Tower, though I think it will take more movies than hollywood execs would like to tell it well (for the four so far i'd say atleast 10 movies). Kings books rarely translate well after hollywood gets ahold of them.
Cronicles of Prydain would be good too, and much shorter 1 movie per book. I always liked these books when I was younger.
I think that Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series would make good movies if they were done right. Especially the first book Wizard's First Rule.
Has anyone else ever read this series?

The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.
Phantom Tollbooth is a good idea, if done well - I DON'T want them screwing up another classic book the way they are destroying Dr. Seuss!
Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series are amazing books - but filming them would be hard. It would need to be a series, really, because of all the nuances to the plots. And I doubt anyone would finance it to the degree required... I mean, I wasn't really satisfied with SciFi channel's "Dune" series. They looked low-budget cheesy to me. I'd want the Martin books to have the full-on LOTR treatment.

A remake of Miyamoto Musashi.
With Kill Bill and The Last Samarai bring back interest in swordfighting, it would be nice to see Japan's very best back on the big screen.

all i know is if a studio is smart they'd go pick up the rights to it.
every LOTR fan would flock to see it!
I found the first Dragonlance book a bit amateurish and contrived. I was really disappointed because everyone said that the books by Weis and Hickman were great. I'll probably try the second one to see if it picks up. Robert Jordan's series would be good until it got to the later books.

I totally agree about the Belgariad and the Malloreon. I must have read both those series a hundred times. However, I would think that it would have to be a mini-series.

Yesterday I finished reading the last Pressfield novel based to Greek history and historical facts . the <<Last of Amazons>> is about the war between Amazons and their barbaric alliens against Athens and all the Greeks ,the elimination of amazons race ,the relation (love and hate) between the civilized Athens and barbaric amazons and finally the profile of a real great king Thisseas (his smartness , his humbleness and his love for Amazons' queen Antiopi)
I almost saw the movie reading this book and I couldn't stop reading because of the action but it is very defficult to be converted to movie because of the many stars ,the many events and the different ages . I believe that this book is two movies because it is impossible so many event (thisseas journey in order to find new sources , his luck to meet Amazons , the great war in Athens between them etc) so many battles (wars in Amazons land near Russia and in Athens) and so many alliances (firstly amazons and Athens and them amazons and similar race)
I know that his first book <<gates of fire>> is going to be film and I can't wait to start reading it before theater.

I felt the same way about the first book. It's aimed a little young (or at least seems that way) The story definately picks up in the second one and actually gets quite dark. The third felt somewhere between the 1st and 2nd in mood. The second book would make a very cool movie.
Notice how we've all mentioned different books? This is probably half the reason why fantasy novels rarely get the movie treatment. No one can agree on what to adapt, or how to adapt it.
sunflower03
11-24-2003, 11:31 PM
well that is easy because any fantasy book that is adapted would require a lot of special effects, and each series has its fans. plus, to be able to make money at the box it would have to have wide enough appeal, that people who don't read fantasy books would have to have heard of it. i love fantasy films, but i do understand the problem with getting them made.
the only other story besides lotr, that would have that kind of appeal to people who aren't major fans of the genre would be king arthur. i am not saying that another series of movies based on fantasy books wouldn't be successful, infact i wish a lot more were made, all i am saying for it to be adapted it would need to be something that could appeal to the average movie goer, and something they probably would have heard of.

New Line bought His Dark Materials, did they not? I read something just the other day on comingsoon.net... that they have a script for the 1st movie (The Golden Compass) but that they are seriously re-working it.
I'm not too sure how I feel about HDM on screen though... all the animals... has potential to be a digital disaster of Lucasfilm dimensions!

I'd like to see Ender's Game as a movie. It'd be difficult to translate correctly to the screen, but it could be done. And if it was done right, it would be truly awesome.
Backtracking to something someone said, I think The Hobbit as a movie is an awful idea. There's probably a thread on this somewhere, but I haven't seen it, so I'll complain here some. Making The Hobbit seems to me like it would be damn near a disservice to the LOTR trilogy. It's too silly and whimsical at heart, or at least the book was, and would be a considerable step down from the epic flicks thus far. Just my opinion.

I personally found the Hobbit a lot more entertaining than Lord of the Rings and all of my friends and I would like to see it be made. They would just need to show this would not be Lord of the RIngs and not make it lok very epic.

I would like to see the Hobbit done too!
I would also like to see some of the tales from the Silmarillion... mostly because I’m so captivated by the whole Lord of The Rings’ way of life… what I mean is.. I love how there’s all the different races, and there’s so much history and detail behind everything, almost making Lord of The Rings seem true. I don’t know if I’m making much sense, but personally I want to see about 10 Lord of the Rings’ movies sitting on my shelf! =).
Just to comment about Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles… I’d love to see The Vampire Lestat done!.. great book! They would need Tom Cruise playing Lestat though! The guy in QoTD completely massacred Lestat!! He's much more witty and classy! Lestat isn’t an American Goth who just wears black clothing all the time!!! ......He’s elegant!!! !! and he has vibrant blonde hair with bluish/grayish eyes! His hair isn’t black, and his eyes are not brown! BAH! I hate the people who made queen of the damned! I hate them!.. Meh..:(
