Can someone recommend me a crime novel?

Having read quite a few Ellroy novels, I was hoping that someone might be able to recommend me a crime novel. Anything along the lines of Ellroy would be great.

If you want to be even more classic then you should pick up Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's " Sherlock Holmes".

But if you want to be more contemporary then I guess James Patterson or Janet Evanovich would be some authors that I would really recommend.

If your a kid around your very early teens then i recommend chasing vermeer & The curious incident of the dog in the night-time. If your a few years older than that then i recommend sherlock homes(especially the hound of the baskervilles), da vinci code and angels and demons( also other dan brown books) and agatha christie.

There is a series of novels that has just begun known as "The Bug Man" novels which follow a Forensic Entomologist as he solves crimes. They are by Tim Downs, and there are two so far "Shoofly Pie" and "Chop Shop". Im not sure if they are what your looking for, but I love them, it is my future occupation afterall, lol.

If you like Tarantino style movies, read some elmore leonard books.
He's my favorite crime writer and wrote get shorty, out of sight, and jackie brown (Rum Punch) i recommend freaky deaky and Tishomingo Blues.

mystery or crime?

the best book about a crime I have ever read is In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote. but it is not a mystery since it's a true story. It's just a fascinating read.
The Dorothy Sayers novels are good too - better than Agatha Christie in some ways but not in others. Peter Wimsey is her main detective, he is interesting. I like the Poirot novels by Christie.

A new book came out called "When Darkness Speaks" by Dalles McKinsey. He reveals details of murders he witnessed by his stepfather who picked up hitchhikers in California. I saw a copy for sale on Amazon.com but I purchased mine through the author's website www.dallesmckinsey.com
thought I'd share in case anyone was looking for a great new True Crime book!

I am a fan of Jeffery Deaver. The Bone Collector is an awsome book, but all his others a great to.

I also suggest Dean Koontz, sometimes it is not mystery, but he has many enthralling thrillers that are great.

James Patterson (Alex Cross Novels: Kiss the Girls, Jack and Jill, Cat and Mouse), Patricia Cornwall (Kay Scarpetta Novels- Get a list and read the all), Sue Grafton (Patsy Kinset Novels- A if for Alibi, goes up alphabetically to R at present. I little campy but decent light hearted reading)

For true crime check out Helter Skelter (Mason family murders)

I agree that In Cold Blood may be the best book about crime ever written. My favorite crime writer, though, has to be Raymond Chandler (if you like Ellroy, he's one of the big ones that Ellroy descends from). Start off with The Big Sleep and, if hooked like me, move on from there.
