For those of you interested in writing your own books, as I am, I suggest reading On Writing by Stephen King. It's a great book that shows how to get started in the writing business. Plus it's by Stephen King.
And he kicks ass.

Yeah, he gives general writing tips, editing tips, things like that. He also talks about how to get published.

It's a good book but when it comes to publishing it all depends on what country you're in. America and the UK have a good many more publishing firms than other countries thus brodening publishing oppurtunities (Though they'll still not publish any old thing. If it's crap, its crap)
Here, in Australia, I'm writing short stories to build up a published works portfolio before I submit any novel length works. Notoriety in the publishing world is invaluable for any up-and-coming author.

Yeah, On Writing is a great book. It doesn't give you the typical BS that most books about writing feed you, and it's very entertaining.
